The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Have been lurking and reading all the threads and post about building a Captain America shield. We built this for my son's birthday as a surprise. Everyone on here has been a huge help!! Thanks so much!!

Here is the shield I finished up about 10 days ago. I posted a progress thread somewhere around here with my paint steps. I kind of shot from the hip on the paints I used and it was all rattlecan work. I used latex masking fluid on the painted areas, black and brown washing, and airbrush for the weathering. I'm pretty happy with it, but then again I never seem to paint anything "clean" anymore. :)

I think I have read almost every page of this thread and it was the inspiration behind buying a phebert shield. The shield is great, by the way.

However, now I'm stuck.

After discovering that Dupli-Color Metalcast seems not to be available in Hong Kong, my initial plan to do a version of the standard shield is out the window.

I did find Rustoleum sprays, but would I be correct in thinking these are not the best to use? Anyone have experience of these paints?

I have tried a test on my star plate using Tamiya clear as suggested in a previous post way back. While it allows the swirls to show through, I'm not wild about the actual colour. (And I've speckled it in places. So it may be coming off in future.)

In the meantime, I have developed a soft spot for the matt, darker colours of the Age of Ultron shield. This looks like an easier route to take.

Found this pic somewhere...

Anyone have any ideas what paints were used and what colours, or their nearest approximations?

Also, is that shading in the grooves, or just the deepness of the cut that makes it look that way. I quite like that look too.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

How long is everyone waiting to seal their shield with the final matte/satin coat? The time on the Duplicolor can says it takes 7 days to fully cure. Do I need wait that long before spraying my final sealing coats?

I finally finished the paint job on my Captain America Shield, I will upload some HD photos once I get my new camera, had to use my Tablet for these, When the light hits it just right it glows like a ruby :) it was a lot of fun and work, hope you enjoy the pics :)

I just got a shied from phebert and started the painting process. Does anyone know how I can smooth out the lines on the star? To make them more straight? Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 2.40.07 AM.png

Just picked up one from him as well. The only thing I can think of is going over it carefully with a scotch bright pad. Idk if that will work. My cover seems pretty beat up from what ever was used to etch the star pattern. The lines are rough and the metal is flaking a bit. Not a huge deal as the price was good and I can make my own star. The concept is great though. If I get another I'll ask to send the cover blank and I'll hand etch the star.

Don't think this image has been posted before and I thought people here would like to see a version of the shield that forms part of the WS blu-ray menu.

It's probably a CG image, but it's not bad as a representation of the shield. The weathering, uneven paint application as well as the matt nature of the paintwork look great to my eye.

The film props also appear much more deeply etched than the available replicas. The darker shadows created by the grooves can be seen here and I feel it really enhances the shield. There are also no rivet markings on the star points which some replicas have. However, I'm inclined to think they should be there.

When I get around to finishing my shield, I will attempt the look contained in this image. I can't get the required Dupli-color paints where I live and this colour scheme, married to the paints I do have access to, may be easier to match.

Cheers

This shot may seem a bit dark as it's a standalone image contained in the disc menu. The disc as it appears in the motion portion of the menu is somewhat lighter.

Lore wise it makes sense that the star wouldn't be riveted on but rather etched on the shield. It is vibranium after all. This picture almost seems layered, as if the star was placed in a recess of the shield.

I still prefer the TFA version the best. I feel like the shield is looking less metallic and more resin.

Hello everyone! New to the site, so much great info... I finally took the plunge, and got a Blank from AMS... and just went through my first painting attempt- and failure... and stripped and going for round 2. :) Using Duplicolor paints.

Very undecided whether to do a traditional shield or the blue on blue Stealth one. Any idea how to get the lighter shade of blue (short of being very VERY careful and light with the Anodized Blue spray)? Is there a lighter anodized blue shade that could be used, perhaps, another brand?

This is to go up on my wall, and maybe walk around with my kids during Halloween.

BTW, all the tips in this thread and on this site are amazing- thank you all and again, hello!

Yeah, it does looked dropped in place. Gives it more dimensionality. Would also make painting a shield made this way very easy!

On a side note, my brackets are due to arrive in the next few days, after I get it mounted I can decide what finish to give it.

The weathering in AOU does take the shine down a couple of notches I feel.

See my comment about the Tamiya paint (comment #825).

So I've been reading this thread for quite a while now, I'm up to page 58, but this week I decided to start painting.
I cleaned the oil and fingerprints using regular nail polish remover, which worked fine, used green frog tape to mask the rings, and painted vertically using a stand I made out of a parasol base.
Being in the UK I couldn't get hold of the Duplicolor paints, so I used VHT Anodized paint.
I started with the blue and it didn't turn out too bad

With the red I seemed to get a better technique, starting thin and getting thicker. I did about 7 coats in the end!
Now here's my only problem... Peeling the tape off the clean aluminium was perfect, the lines were great. Peeling from the blue section however caused the paint to peel from the groove. So frustrating!
I really don't want to strip the whole thing down and start again, so I'm thinking of spraying some blue into a jar and touching up with a really small brush. As its only in the grove it won't be terribly noticeable, and then clear coat. What are everyone's thoughts?
Thanks for all the input and experience everyone has provided on this thread, I couldn't have even got started without it!
Here's some pics

Finally got my shield done for NYCC and Halloween. Unfortunately I dropped it right before painting onto a concrete floor and damaged it in a few spots. Nothing I could do to repair it as they were deep gashes, such is my luck. Also painted a 3D print of a PPK as my gf will be going as Peggy.
