Hi Everyone,
First of all - Holy cow this thread is massive. I've lurked around this site for awhile but this is my first post. I've looked through these pages and tried to find a really good post about masking, but haven't found one that really details everything out.
I recently purchased a blank from Rolo, and getting that perfect circle line is giving me so much trouble. I've been using 3M masking tape and waiting until dry to peel off, but my circle never looks crisp. So here are my questions:
What tape should I be using? I've seen the mentions of frog tape but i don't believe its really a bleeding problem - more my lack of ability to make a perfect circle. Should i try really thin auto tape? Any suggestions on getting that perfect circle?
Second, are people putting the tape in the grooves? around the grooves? I've tried not masking the grooves but the circle never comes out well. Should i be putting tape in the grooves? Will that create a perfect circle?

Thanks. Nothing special.. I just cut a piece of metal into the star shape, bent it into shape, then I just scored the lines over and over using that as a stencil until they were deep enough, did basically the same with the inner star and then used a dremmel to do the rivets at the inner points. Then used a scotch pad rubbing with the grain to smooth it all out.

You want your tape to go into the groove, then use a sharp hobby knife to cut from there. Use the V of the groove as your cutting guide
Has anyone figured out the best blue to use for a Stealth shield?

As per the picture I attached, my brushed Aluminium star has turned out a lot brighter than my steel ring and I want to know of any suggestions to either dull the star or brighten up the ring to get them somewhere closer to each other.
So far the shield currently (Which is accurate to the time the pic was taken) has had 2 light and a medium to heavy coat of Rustolereum Gloss clear coat.
- Does the shield need more clear coat?
- Best technique for wetsanding the clearcoat? Then buffing?
- Do you clear coat the star (not attached yet, to be JB welded on after I'm finished with the shield)
- How to dull the star or shine the shield?
- Do you clear coat the back of the shield? If so do you leave a spot for the mounting tape like you did with the star?

My steps:
1. Clean shield and star with warm water and liquid dish soap.
2. Clean shield with lacquer thinner.
3. Tape up the entire shield with green frog tape.
4. Attach the brackets on the back with JB Weld or Mounting tape.
5. Tape up the leather straps and clear coat the entire back of the shield.
6. Cut out the center and paint it blue.Let dry for a day, tape over the blue.
7. Cut out the rings for red and paint them red. Let dry for a day.
8. Remove all tape from the shield.
9. I do not sand the paint.
10. Clean the red, blue and metal part of the shield with TSP. (Search amazon or home depot)
11. Attach the star with JB Weld or Mounting tape.
12. Clean front again with TSP and make sure it is lint free.
13. Add battle damage if desired.
14. Apply 2-3 coats of clear the entire front (with the star already attached) with Satin clear coat.
15. Admire.
Note: You can also add battle damage after the clear coat is applied by painting the shield with plasti dip and then using metallic silver paint to paint on top of the plasti dip. This way, if you don't want it battle damaged anymore you can just peel it off.
Note: I do not sand the satin clear coat either. You can wet sand and re-clear if needed. You can also polish and buff but with Satin, I just leave it alone.

Thanks vinxero, I went with the gloss just to try and match the star but it is still much too shiny for the ring.
Ps love the plastidip idea just to do battle damage but be able to go back to clean.

Have you tried Testors Icy Blue TES 1884M?
Haven't seen it in real life but the online color looks like a good start.

Unfortunately you won't be able to brighten the silver ring to match the star using gloss.
Your two options are:
1. Darken the star some how (battle damage or maybe a light spray tint? )
2. Strip the shield and brighten the disk more with Scotch bright pads then re paint.

I recon that would be perfect. I'll have to see what I can find. Being in aus we tend not to have most of the great products people used... My sleds shipping was twice the cost of the sled itself
