Alright, I have the center circle taped and red paint in hand. Here we go!

It doesn't seem to be as glossy as some of the shields I see. I'm not a big fan if an overly glossy look. Is it just the picture or is the perfect clear not as glossy as usual? And the Testors is a satin clear?

The testors is a normal gloss coat. Not necessarily satin. I didn't wet sand or polish and it's not a high gloss coat so that may be why

Finally got started painting my shield. The photo below is my first swing at getting the blue right. I was relatively happy with the paint itself, but I think there's too much dust in my work area to lay it down perfectly and I keep getting little dust specks on the shield. I've stripped it since then and painted it two more times and I'm going back and forth on whether to strip it once again. In any case, I've masked the shield and am getting ready to paint the red. If I decide to redo the blue, I'll just mask the whole thing except for the blue area and give it yet another go.

Also attached are a few pics of the brackets in an in-progress state. I've smoothed them down considerably since this photo was taken. They're not perfect, far from it, but I'm happy enough with them. The other picture is a really quick sketch of what I'm ultimately hoping to do with the brackets. I've always wondered why the brackets have the extra leather that makes the "X" shape, so I decided to try to put them to use. What I'd like is to be able to detach them so that I can use the existing extra leather for shoulder straps. I've been hitting some roadblocks on figuring out an attachment mechanism that will be sturdy but also easy to detach. Right now, the plan is to try to use flush mount clips to mount the metal clips. We'll see if that works at all.

It's a weird thing: as frustrating as it is to not get the paint perfect and to run into other issues, it's so much fun trying to get it just right.

How did you smooth out the brackets?
 
Does everyone use the tape for the brackets? I thought JB weld would be the way to go, but Valor's instructions say TAPE. Not questioning his expertise or anything, just wondering if everyone does it that way. another question: Should I acetone the brackets as well as the back of the shield? If so, should is acetone entire back then the brackets and then attach them or, attach brackets and acetone the whole thing? If this was covered on one of the 33 pages, I apologize and will post many awesome pics of the completed shield as punishment :)

I've always used the JB weld, but it's personal preference really. Whatever makes you happy :)
 
I've moved away from jb weld entirely both with the brackets and the star and opted for rivets and mounting tape. Jb weld tends to be permanent and I like being able to easily replace damaged parts or repaint if necessary.

I used a metal file to smooth down the edges so that I wouldn't cut myself. Then I went over the whole thing with sandpaper and really sanded the heck out of it. I ended up using a little higher grit sandpaper (250 I think) than I expected I would because I liked the sort of brushed finish that it left. I used my drill to start smoothing out the interior cuttings and them sanded and filed them the best I could. It's nowhere near as nice as some others' work in the forum but I'll post new pics in a bit.
 
Ack! So the outdoor mounting strips I used to attach the brackets on the back are failing. Anybody else seeing this? I was thinking of squirting some E6000 under there where the strips are not holding. Anybody else see any problems with the strips?
 
What lbs are they rated for? If they are the correct weight, other factors that could cause them to fail is storing the shield in heat or the tape is really attached to the clear coat and it's pulling that off the shield itself

The tape is supposed to hold 10 pounds per 6 inch strip. I'm using way more than that. It may be the clear coat issue though. It seems to be holding in some areas, and not in others.
 
We generally use the 20lb test tape. When I lay down the tape I pretty much line the entire border of each bracket
