The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Well here it is. Still have to wet sand and clear coat. But overall I'm pretty happy. Big thanks to Valor for all his info about making these sled shields!

Hello:

As a result of my recently completed sled build (post #760 here), a number of my friends want me to make them shields. I just found out the USAF is moving me to Hawaii in October and I want to finish the projects before I move to avoid ridiculous shipping costs, so I figured I'd use spun shield blanks to cut down my labor/work time.

I've seen a few different sources on here, but if someone who's used a good vendor for blanks recently could PM who they used and the following info on them, I'd appreciate it. How thick are the blanks? What do they charge including shipping? How long did it take to receive them? Thanks much!

Thanks Jeff! Quick question for the Testors users out there while I'm taping off, how many coats should I put down with the blue/red? 2-3?

It depends on your spraying technique. I'm around 3/4. It may sound silly but you stop when you feel it looks right. Better to keep adding lighter coats then to go too heavy.

I'm doing double duty right now. I'm painting an aluminum blank and stripping and repainting a sled shield.

Thanks Drake! Yeah, this shield is a sled and I'm pretty nervous! What would you guys recommend for wait-time between coats with the Testors? 10-15 mins? Anyway, here's my progress:

Got the spun effect on the sled

Taped it off

And removed the tape for the center circle, minus the star.

Lemme know what you think!

EDIT: Also, before I paint, did I put the tape on correctly? I just put on one layer of tape for the whole thing.

Looking good. 20 min is nice and safe between coats. My blank just needs a clear and the star, then it's on to repainting my sled shield.

Drake, that is a thing of beauty! Would you recommend putting the clear on before or after the star?

It seems like I can't paint my sled properly for my lack of experience in painting so heres what I did to my sled. A battle damage effect and I'm satisfied with this. Tomorrow ill be attaching the braces and the star. My question is where do you guys put the JB weld on the star? Im worried that I might put too much on the end and will make a big mess.

Star glued and satin clear coat. It's not perfect but I'm happy with it. If I make another I'm definitely getting an aluminum blank. But this will do nicely for SDCC. Now to move on to the brackets as soon as the aluminum sheet I orders shows up.

You can go either way but if you do them separately make sure to leave a bare spot for the star

Alright, put down the blue last night. Left it overnight, but I'll probably still wait until tomorrow to tape over the blue and paint the red.

Question about the brackets for those of you that use the exterior mounting tape. I stopped by Lowe's to pick some up, and was directed to get this. Now I know this may sound fickle, but the packaging says "extreme mounting tape" instead of "exterior mounting tape" and the packaging is definitely different. Is this a usable substitute, or should I return it and look for the exact match?

Thanks,

OK, so I am getting ready to start my shield project - trying to summarize everything to make sure I have 32 pages worth of thread understood correctly:

1. acquire shield blank
2. clean front and back of shield with acetone to remove oils/fingerprints/dirt
3. matte clearcoat rear of shield, attach brackets
4. acquire DupliColor Metalcast Anodized blue and red paint
5. use FrogTape or blue delicate Scotch painter's tape to mask off the entire shield
6. trace star from Valor inside circle and leave tape down so star has metal-on-metal contact for JBWeld/other glue
7. remove tape for inner blue circle, paint vertically
8. when dry, re-tape over blue section, remove tape from 1st and 3rd rings
9, paint red rings
10. when dry, remove all tape except star-shaped tape
11. matte clearcoat star and shield
12. Remove tape, glue or JBWeld star to blue circle
13. Take photo making awesome Captain America pose

That sound about right? Am I missing something?

Ok guys here is a side by side comparison. Just finished my buddys shield. His duplicolor on the left. My testors on the rightuploadfromtaptalk1401751386726.jpg

Drake, those both look stunning! And I hate to disagree with ya Jeff, but I'm a big fan of the Testors. To each his own. haha

Aeric

Haha thanks and yep.. one isn't better than the other. It's really personal preference
