The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

A few folks PM'd me to re-upload some pics of my painted shield since I accidentally deleted them from photobucket. Here ya go!

Thanks mtrix! I really love that case. I've been looking for a similar one for my shield but new ones are so expensive. I may have to build something from scratch.

Man - I love that shield and the paint job. Those colors look amazing :) Thanks for posting!

I'm so torn between the Testors and Duplicolor paints. Both have their benefits...ahhhhh

I have to ask, but is there an easy way to spray the indentation areas? Like flat, the surface looks like --v--v--v---v--v--v-- (each 'v' being the division in between each circle) but when I'm working painter's tape, I try cutting along the furthest edge of the canyon so I can push the extra tape down over the inner... man describing this is hard..

*edit, tried to use '-', '_', and '\ /' for shaping out the shield lay out so I wrote it out instead

(outer red circle 2) *break inbetween half red and half bare* (outer bare circle) *break inbetween half bare and red* (outer red circle 1) *break inbetween half red and blue* (blue central circle) *break inbetween half blue and red* (outer red circle 1) *break inbetween half red and bare* (outer bare circle) *break inbetween half bare and red* (outer red circle 2)

The biggest hurdle I'm running into now is cleaning up the inner rings to look solid and consistent. Inbetween persay all the sections that touch a red circle, I have more bare metal between the two, even the blue central circle area to the outer red circle area, its still coming out spotty. Like, should I just get another can of red car paint and spray it into the cap so I can use a small detail brush to run along the lighter red side? I was already thinking of doing that for two spots/edges of the red rings that came off while I was scrapping off painters tape. Otherwise is there a better method for filling in those pesky areas? I've run through so much painters tape layering everything and trying to hit the desired inner ring area but its not quite getting it spot on as I'd like.

And Mtrixman, damn fine work. Love the clean paint and excellent harness system! Looks conforming, comfortable, and sturdy!

Jwave, that's exactly how I cut the painters tape and spray the rings. Mtrix clued me into a very big advantage to using testors as opposed to duplicolor. A red sharpie is nearly a perfect match for the testors. It's a great way to clean up the rings.

Anyone hang theirs up on the wall? What have you used?

The he two shields I've made previously used a different bracket system that I devised. To hang them, I had a thick nylon strap connected to the top of each bracket. What was nice about that was that while it hung on one nail on the wall, the weight was distributed on two points on the shield.

Has as anyone used one hook attachment or something to hang it? If so, what? Has it seemed sturdy enough to support it from one hook, etc.?

Thanks everyone! Here are two more pics of the case and the shield at a different angle

The star isn't flush. It's mounted up top like everyone else. I bought this shield second hand but ended up messing up the original paint job. As a result, I decided to strip it and repaint it myself.

Since the star was already attached, I used a blue sharpie and traced along the outside of the star before painting the blue part. I originally did this because I found that getting the blue paint along the edges was a pain. However, this has an unexpected side effect of giving the star a slightly recessed look from a certain angle

Also, the case came with the purchase so not sure who made it (but it was the whole reason I decided to buy it cause I loved the case so much)

Thanks!

Best way I found to tape off the rings iOS to use a thinner cheap making tape. Not painters tape. And lay it gently over a "valley" and push the tape down inside with my thumbnail. Once the whole ring is taped I run a sharp exacto blade along the bottom of the valley and remove one side. It make a razor sharp paint line right at the bottom of the valley

Mtrixman, great shield. This is the first shield that has the ring around the back wide perimeter.

Doesn't anyone know who makes this shield?

That case is a Hardigg military case. I've been searching for one for my shield. Fairly expensive in those dimensions brand new.

Hi guys , there are some amazing shields posted above . I especially love mtrixman's shield . The paint finish and the case is incredible . I would love to own one as detailed as that . Is there a site that users sell their shields safely ? I'm really not talented in arts to create such a fine item . Sorry if this is against any rules ( new member :) )

Thanks for the tip! I've so far been attacking it on the surface but I can see how applying more directly onto the valley portion and removing extra from the inside would be a better way to go. I may have to try that if this red sharpie idea doesn't work!

A lot of shields have the back bracket like that. Chris Fields made them that way.

That is just amazing on the back side of the shield. How does Chris do all the concentric rings. Then how the last ring on the outer edge is just connected to the shield brackets. Amazing!

You basically get yourself a second spun disc to match your blank shield and cut the entire bracket out in one piece

I have a question, but there are so many captain shield threads, I may have missed the answer.

Has anybody thought to make a mold of a metal shield and then pull casts of it in hard resin? It seems like it would be an ideal candiate, since the metal shields can be very expensive. Also all the necessary bracketing on the back could be cast with the shield as a single piece. Is this something that's doable?
