The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

I agree--strip it and start again. If you just started painting two days ago and already have the red AND blue done, then you're not letting the paint dry well enough. Depending on the paint and the metal, as well as who you ask, you'll be told to wait anywhere between 3 and 7 days to let the paint cure. If you paint blue one day and then tape over it the next, you're going to mess up the paint.

As kevin & drake said, most of us end up stripping and reprinting a few times. Better take your time and do it well than to rush it and have it turn out below your goals. You can still make wondercon, just take a breath and give it time, young padawan!

+ 1 on stripping and repainting. As for the dry times, I waited an entire week as I as afraid the Blue paint on the center would peel off with the masking tape when I was going to paint the red rings.

Long story short, ensure the paint is fully cured and very careful pull the tape off if it's over a painted edge

Everything else was already mentioned in the previous posts. Can't wait to see more pics!!

I was reluctant, but I see that only adding more layers would compound the problem. I've gotten some of that citrus paint remover, let it set and cleaned it all off. It looked like Captain's shield flew through a few bodies because it was very viscousy! Anyway one of the points is coming off from the star now so I'll reapply some epoxy and secure it, once set I'll go about painting in a more controlled environment. I will also attempt the method of 'covering the whole face' with tape and cutting out sections not needed so I can ensure the right areas are tapped off. I think that by layering rather than caking I'll eventually get the results I want. I can see what you all mean by giving it time. Seriously thanks for all your wisdom!

I ordered my 1st blank ,yesterday. I can't wait! I will have to study this thread again so I don't ask a question that was answered many times before.
It would be cool to have a thread that detailed the different techniques and paints used by others and photos of the results. Maybe it already exists.
Anyway, I'm excited to make own shield :)

So any suggestions on what kind of brackets I can buy so that I can hang this up on my wall?

also, does the new shield look like it has white to you or is it the reflection?

It's just the reflection, it's still suppose to bare vibranium color... but the rubber and plastic shields in the films never have quite the look of the original metal ones.

Hi guys, was hoping to find a link to buy a quality bare Cap shield. Seeing all your guys awesome shields has inspired me to try my hand at my own one so was wondering is there a definitive guide for the likes of obtaining, painting etc and the straps and brackets....I'll look through the rest of the thread now just thought I'd ask :p

Thanks

I was wondering if anyone here has experience using Spray Max 2K clear coat? Its a two part catalyzing clear in an aerosol can. It seems to have pretty good reviews for its durability, i figured it may be a good alternative to having an actual body shop clear coat it.

stripped and going to start my second attempt tomorrow. Still seeking a better place to spray that won't allow nasty fuzzies to accumulate but I might have one at work.

The circle on the star is a pair of rare earth magnets securing the point to the shield as during the stripping process it took the glue off. I found them useful for securing the points of the stars to the contour of the shield. This time I'll have to be careful to ease up on the paint.

One thing you can do to keep dust down is to lightly wet the area you're spraying in. It helps makes the dust and stuff too heavy to float in the air. If you go too far you'll have too much humidity to do a good paint job, but that's pretty hard to do without soaking the area.

how long are people waiting between stripping the steel sled and doing the painting and does doing it quickly help prevent the "flash rust"

It depends on the humidity. You won't have to worry about flash rusting until after you etched the grooves and used the bright pad on it. Stripping the paint alone won't expose the metal to too much harm. Keep it inside and that should buy you a few days.

Breezed through the thread but didn't see anyone mention it...

Has anyone had good results powder coating one?

Great results as far as the ability to do it, but haven't found the right shades of red and blue yet. The blues are too light and the reds are too dark/orangey.

Here is my latest offering. My first time using Testors as opposed to duplicolor. I must say I am really liking it. Duplicolor gives that really shiny pop but Testors gives that closer movie look. I also elected to go with rivets for the star. It will make repairing and repainting so much easier if need be. uploadfromtaptalk1397505022108.jpg

That's funny... where did you get that blank from? Those backside groove cross sections look just like mine, which are different from the film version, on purpose...

Hey guys,

I'm finally going to dust off my sled and make it a shield! I just have a couple of questions if someone can help out? I'm probably over thinking things.

1. Cut outer lip off and prep shield (paint stripper and clean)

2. Attach star

3. Mask entire shield. Use armature or other way to cut the rings out of tape.

4. Remove blue ring tape (leave tape on star) and paint blue

5. Re-tape blue circle and star

6. Paint red circles.

My question is are there any tricks to re-taping the blue part and getting the edges to match up to the next circle?

Also, is it worth it to try and make grooves in the sled?
