The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

One of these days one of us needs to post a you tube video of our painting technique to compare. At some point I'm going to redo my sled shield as a wonder woman shield. I'll video tape that.

Haha funny you mentioned that... I've been video documenting the entire process that im going through... mistakes and all... and was just thinking yesterday about creating a Duplicolor Metalcast paint technique video... assuming i can actually get it to go down properly haha.

Make sure you post and link it. Tbh I don't think I follow many of the techniques like warming up the can, lazy Susan, or painting vertical.

When I get around to repainting my shield that is exactly what I plan on doing :lol

I finished my red rings (on the second attempt). I taped off to paint the blue and had to adjust the tape in the groove and some of the red came off. Using scotch blue masking tape. Has anyone had this issue. I have the delicate surface tape but it is not flexible enough to get in the grove properly. Would clear coating the red before taping help ? Using Krylon satin.

haha so this weekend I made a video recording all the steps that I used to throw down the paint... of course the end result was good not great. Not glass smooth like I wanted but almost glass smooth.

That should have been plenty of time for it to dry. My only guess is you were misting the coats a bit too much as you were applying it. That would cause the red to not adhere as well. Did it come off in the groove or on the actual ring

Came off in the groove but just one area. Time to strip and re-spray. This will only be my third time so I think I may still be ahead of the curve.

Thanks

Well I've actually stripped my shield 3 times now. I seem to be able to lay the blue and the red outer circles down perfect. However after doing a really careful masking job covering the groove between the blue and the red circle, laying the paint down, letting it dry for a decent period of time, upon removal of the tape I always seem to end up lifting some of the red paint away around the edges near the groove without fail. I have no idea why this keeps happening as it doesn't on the outer circle or on the blue circle I'm guessing I've hit the red to heavy around the centre and it's drying to the tape edges.

Frustrating to say the least any one got any tips? Has anyone used liquid masking fluid? How easy is it to remove, and will it not damage the paint of using it to cover the blue groove before hitting the red?

Thanks for any help.

Post s pic

Unfortunately I don't have a pic, it's just slight peeling around the edge only 2/3 times but enough to bug the hell out of me

I feel your pain mate I've just finished masking mine up about 30 mins ago for attempt number 3 but it's chilled off a little here in London so will now wait until tomorrow , trouble is this paint is so unforgiving of any slight mistakes and given the way we all strive for a 100 percent quality job we are just asking to be disappointed time and again lol

Am interested in the idea of using a red sharpie for possibly touching in those groves I have one so will defo give that's try .

Mike

btw , massive thumbs up to the USA football team last night ! As we say over here ' you were robbed ' great match & brilliant effort for 120 mins !
