I don't know if I'm the only one but I always liked the Emperor from THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK as opposed to Ian McDiarmid's Emperor, i always found his acting to be over the top. Is this just me????? what do you guys think?

I found they were pretty similar. I thought they were the same guy growing up, not an old woman with monkey eyes super-imposed in ESB. I like the condescending Emperor of RotJ. It's like he's grown so annoyingly tired about everything that everything is just a joke to him and he likes to see other people rise to the occasion only to fail because they couldn't control themselves.

The only version of the Emperor that I like is ROTJ.

I liked the original ESB one, because it was more 'serious', but it was a very limited performance. Plus it was a woman (Stuart Freeborn's wife) with overlaid Chimp eyes and a mans voice dubbed. It could not have worked as a character in ROTJ, but as a non-moving hologram it was perfect.

I hate the 'new' ESB version, he seems stoned to me, like he drunk-dialed Vader.

I HATED the ROTS version. It's like Ian completely forgot what he did in ROTJ. The voice was terrible, the facial expressions were terrible, I always feel embarrassed watching it. It's so terrible.

The emperor from ROTJ is one of my very favorite things about the entire trilogy.
I don't mind the new footage inserted into ESB, but the revised dialog blows in my opinion.

Yeah...Robot Chicken Emperor=#Winning. I did'nt mind the ESB or Jedi Emperors...but God, the over the top Emperor in ROTS seems too crazy to have been able to manipulate so many and rise to power the way he did. The dialog was awful in that film.

I am really surprised that Vader did not decide over the years to just take out the Emperor and rule for himself...it's not like he really needed him after Padme died.

I like the ROTJ Emperor. I don't think it was over the top so much as the Emperor was just happy because the Rebels are being destroyed and he has a new potential apprentice.

The only time rots emperor was scary is when he converted ani to Vader with that psycho deep demonic voice. Then the "ONCE MORE.THE SITH WILL RULE THE GALAXY" voice was over the trench.

I was scared when rotj emperor almost owned Luke, rotj emperor was the original sith lord and totally terrifying to any young jedi

Yeah, I mean, crazy and over the top didn't work for Hitler....

ha ho he ha.....good one dude.

I found the original ESB emperor creepy as hell when I was a kid, and much prefer it to the revised ESB one. That's not saying I prefer that over Ian for ROTJ; I've no issue with them being different actors. It's the same character, yeah? Kind of like James Bond. Supposed to be the same person.

The original ESB one had a lot going for it I think.

Good thread!

For everyone else here, I won't be equated with basically being a sympathizer for invoking an obvious comparison that's been made countless times, even on History Channel. Just clarifying. I think it's a sign to back out of these threads permanently.

I completely agree with Gino here, this time.

I really like Ian Mc Diarmid as the Emperor since I first saw his appearancy in ROTJ. He´s my personal ultimate most evil movie villain.

I´m not completely satisfied about his look in 2004´s ESB version, because of the not so good looking ROTS silicone prostetics, they gave him (especially the neck wrinkles always annoy me) - but I always whished to see Ian in ESB.
To replace the old one seams like a good joice to me.

TOTALLY agree!!!!

The only version of the Emperor that I like is ROTJ.

Even back in '80 as a kid I saw that emperor and thought 'what was/is that?'. Obviously it was the emperor but it looked really bizarre. The only way it can stand is if the emperor in ROTJ was done up to look the same. It needs to match, frankly. Unless the emperor underwent a total head replacement surgery in the span between flicks.

Even the ROTS 'change' supposed wasn't so much a change, just the emperor revealing what he actually looked like - palpatine was the disguise.
