The DEFINITIVE VADER Q&A session - time to ARCHIVE?

I say we all take a field trip with darthjones to ILM and get this straightened out, once and for all!

darthjones, I did forget to thank you in my last post for your efforts to get these measurements. Thank you! And of course, thanks for sharing all of this with us.

I would leave the shoulder bells the same. Because if you lengthen the sides of the armor, the holes will shrink a little bit.

Get it? Think about it.

Also, kinda weird that one of you got 10" width on GT back and the other got 11.5". This is weird. Someone gotta figure this out.

The only thing I would ever do with GT is widen the front and fill it in.

Darth jones, camerons vader armor is 36cm or 14.17 inches from point to point at the bottom. He sent me a pic of it that I kept.

g/t chest armor is about 15" at the bottom. but the sides seem to have been curved in. instead of being more straight from the top of the shoulder down to the bottom of the chest area.

Cams vader bells look great, but something about the center ridge in the chest armor just dosen't look right to me.the sides of Cams vader chest armor also look goo. they don't taper inwards like g/t version.

KL if the g/t version is about 15" and DJ measured 14 3/4 why would you add width? are you reffering to how the sides taper inwards on each side?

I made that mod to mine along with making the front of each bell a little longer to match better with the chest armor.

DJ can you get bell measurments? I think g/t version must have been modified.

Cams are 8.66" deep (front to back
4.72" tall*
5.31" wide*

* could be the other way around.

Iceman, the real armor was 17 1/2" and my GT set was 14 3/4". Just to clarify

I have a set of Cameron's armor ;though I don't know much about their history. Can anyone fill me in? I was told they were molded off an EMPIRE set but they look kinda small on the fiberglass helmet. Could they be stunt armor? I was going to upgrade to a GT armor which looked bigger.Perhaps I can motify the CO armor. Any info would be appreciated.

OK gents,

I painstakingly watched every scene with Vader in ESB last night. I have one of those boot DVDs taken from the laser disc. I watched every scene in real time, then frame by frame. My observations:

I was incorrect about how far down the armor goes in the back. More than the GT, but not as far down as the front. I thought it was even. Dead wrong.

The best view is right after the 'you are beaten' lull in the fight. Luke gets back up and they start fighting again. Vader's cape comes off of his right shoulder for a little bit and you get a nice side and slightly from the back view. The shoulder bell is just slightly tucked under the armor. The back bottom of the bell is lined up with the back of the armor, the front extends down his chest past the front bottom of the bell.

An interesting point is that during the fight scenes where the armor is visable it does not look trimmed down at all. If that is Bob Anderson it looks like he is wearing Prowse's armor.

Here are measurements I would like to see from a screen used set and the GT:

Assuming the GT armor is cast from (that was cast from) screen armor then all but the outer (A, I, L, M) ones should match up. If this is the case then using the outer dimensions an extended set of GT could be pretty dead on.

Here is another view of GT style and the Oakley style. The GT does look like the same contours. I don't think the Oakley style does.

Whadya think?

Is there any chance of getting these measurements?

ya know I wonder if COs is from ANH???

Either way, its possible that if it were an ESB stunt version, it would have been trimmed to make the edges softer so as to be as safe as possible...kinda sucks to have a sharp fiberglass edge driven into your chest.

two cents

You know if you look at the ANH shot I posted earlier in this thread the armor does look a bit more like COs. Whatya think? Cut down a set from the last movie for stunts instead of ruining one from the new molds...

Actually, I was thinking the same thing. If you look at the pic in the Lucasfilm Archives book it's short just like that.

the other REALLY important thing to keep in mind is that if the black/silver paint jobs get wider or more narrow in certain areas, this can really fool the eye into thinking the basic form is off. The same thing can be seen on the Boba Fett helmet. Some Deluxes have paint jobs that extend over or stop before the edges of the cheeks and 'mandibles' and this creates an illusion of size (especially looking at a pic on a pc screen)

The CO pic is still too small to make out much detail. Can someone enlarge the GT and the CO -withOUT0 any color so we can just seen the actual sculpt?

Hmmm. I still wonder about the GT armor. Having seen it only once I thought that it was perfect except for the sides. It'll take a while but what I want to do eventually is send a GT set up to the ILM dude and ask for comparisons. This won't be for a couple months yet. I'm just fantasizing about it at this point.

DJ,

I'm headed up that way next week and would be happy to take my GT armour with me. If you wanted to hook me up with your friend then I'd be happy to do this for everyone.... that is, as long as I get to go to the ranch.
icon_wink.gif

Seriously, I'd love to meet your friend, I'd love to go to the ranch, and I'd love to compare my GT armour to the real thing (but I'm not going to hold my breath).
However, I'd have to do some sweet talking to my girlfriend for her to put up with this "geeky Star Wars excursion."

-T.J.

BTW... I love this thread! This is the kind of thread that this place is all about.

Hey TJ, that'd be great if you could compare the GT side-by-side with the real deal!!!!

Oooooohh.... I'm drooling at the prospect already!!!!

DJ, could he shoot some photos?

The pic of the GT armor above (with red background) looks like the bells should be turned around, the longest edge of the bell should be against the front of the chest plate. With this done on my GT set the bells are still too short though.

DJ Keep the good info coming, and thankyou for the valuable help!!!

Alan.

Did someone post this pic of Vader's chest box? Anyone know which suit it's from?

[attachmentid=1182]

Hi. I'm pretty busy right now but thought I'd stop by for a look-see. That chest box, while all nice and shiny, was made after the trilogy. Supposed to be ROTJ box but letters are different and rods are resin. Also, looks as if they removed the little bases from the coin slots.

This is possibly one of the best threads ever.

Darthjones, that pic that speedtwin posted with the measurements of the chest armor also shows the bottom half of a helmet. It looks like both grills in the nose and chin area are silver in colour. My question is, is that right? I was under the impression that the grills were black.

Thanks in advance for your answer.
