The Definitive Peter Quill/Star-Lord Costume Thread

I'm curious to see if there's any more hint of the Skecher left there.

There is likely nothing left visible on the outside. The high-res photos I have seen show that the outer leather of the shoe is actually very thin, so it's possible that they simply covered the skechers with it instead of only using the sole. (They probably loosened the edges so that it could be tucked in though.) That would be the quickest way to do it and would remove the need to make a comfortable inside for Pratt to wear.

Also... some progress on the grip, but still a long way from being done. I've done a print to test sizing/fit and it's great. (Size of the overall gun should be very close as well since I had some exact measurements to extrapolate from.)

Then there's the lining... not sure which one I'm going to use yet.

That looks great! I (like most people) just repainted a pair of the nerf blasters, not 100% screen accurate, but it works for me considering my budget and current abilities!

Again just the base boot! The Sketchers bottom will be applied as well as the additions to the top and back! Brown leather overlay will be added to the front of course!

Thus the comment "base boot"..............

I got what you meant. I assumed you meant to cannibalize it and put it on the skecher sole. However. There is no way of telling if that boot will fit nicely in the footbed of the skecher sole. There isn't a universal shape based on size for shoe lasts. So it could be an expensive failed experiment.

Could very well be a possibility. They would have had to sand down the seams pretty heavily though. Both laced and slip on styles have some pretty distinct raised seams.
I'm personally planning on taking it one step further and cannibalizing the outer of the upper to make a pattern, and cover the guts with the new shape. This is going to be an interesting few months. Between this and my Jaime Lannister boots (which I'm making 100% from scratch) I should have cobblery down.

To grime it up, I suggest mixing some brown shoe polish with leather balm and then rubbing it in a little at a time. Straight shoe polish will make it too dark- you want to use leather balm (or mix with CLEAR shoe polish) to lessen the pigment in it. Leather dye is good for deep coverage but it contains strong solvents that seem into the leather very quickly, making it hard to do gradients and fades. Thick balm or shoe polish on the other hand, is greasy and takes longer to seep into the leather.

I'll look into the brown, I was going to do the black because not only do I need it to look weathered, I also need it to look considerably darker. I'll have to see what's available locally now.

Has anyone had any brilliant ideas about fattening up the shirt collar? Could it be as simple as buying two shirts and cutting strips from one, folded over a few times for thickness and then stitching multiple perpendicular seams before sewing it over the existing collar? I'm not exactly sewing literate, so I'm open to suggestions.

I've got a mock turtleneck Tiger Woods performance shirt that I'm using. I believe the color is Armory Slate (grey, not blue like most people are using). The extra tall collar looks great folded over to make a normal sized collar and will give the thickness of the Star Lord collar. It's a pretty spendy piece of clothing, but any mock turtleneck shirt of the appropriate color I would think would work well.

Speaking of color, after I recieved my motorcycle pants, I almost instantly wished I would have bought some type of skinnier bluer pants. I just don't think the absolute black looks very good.

They most likely stripped the outer skin of the sketcher shoe and re skinned it. There is a high res picture of the back of the boot and there is a low res picture of the boot opened in a photo that was in a dressing trailer he used.

I hear soaking in salt water for awhile will help fade and wear them; I plan to do that with a couple pieces like the shirt - give it a shot! (look up the rest of the directions, don't just go with the little bit I said =0) )

The boots are definitely built up from the sole, the original skecher shoe is gone. The raised paneling on those shoes is really high and the screen used boots aren't bulky. The weight of the leather that's punched through is about 3 ounce, so if they built on top of an existing shoe they'd have to smooth it out with some kind of compound caked on top, then stretch two new pieces of leather over the top for the two layer punched out design. The shoes would be massive. Chris Pratt would have to have size 6 feet for the shoes I saw to fit him with all that inside.

I think some people did a salt solution to fade their Jack Sparrow vests, excellent suggestion! I'll have to check into what I could use, because the pants look WAAAAY too crisp and clean for Peter Quill!

Hard to photograph accurately, but IRL the pattern matches up almost perfectly in size, tone and light reflection to the swatch and photographs I have. The color is also more or less dead-on and I've done several different dyes to get the variation in tone from red-orange to the darker burgundy. (One one pictured is a medium-light panel.)

Also... (more or less) final grip, rest of the details still being worked on:

The fabric looks fantastic, I'd be interested if you did a run.

Definitely up for this if you do a run.

Thanks guys. : )

Unfortunately, this is too labor-intensive and impractical to do a run. The fabric has been through about 4 dye cycles using different tones of orange, red, terracotta and brown, then bleached in several stages to get the weathered look. (I went for a base shade that is slightly lighter than the card swatches because they are "pristine" and thus too dark.) This is for one jacket- doing more at once with this heavy fabric risks the results being too uneven. (This is also simply to get the base color- before the bleaching done to the back and side panels, which is a whole other story- the missus and cats are probably tired of the apartment smelling like a swimming club, haha.) Printing wasn't too difficult but I did have to redo a couple panels due to uneven coverage and smudging. I've got enough heavy fabric here to do one batch extra and if I don't need it as backup myself I could print that up and offer it in the JY.

Joining in the people marveling (pardon the pun) over your fabric. I'm not starting my own Star Lord costume till after Christmas; but screen printing and aging that fabric is one of the biggest tasks I fear possibly more then even the leather work...at least I have some experience with leather.

Hope it turns out half as awesome as yours did :) Yours looks like it came right from the screen!

I have a problem.

I am scratch building a helmet and have made it all the way to the pipe fittings on the bottom. Unfortunately, my helmet is on a different scale and the template I used didn't have the fittings.

Could some one give me a size relation with some thing else on the helmet, like the diameter of the pipe is half the size of the mouth grill or something.

I would appreciate it
