The Definitive Peter Quill/Star-Lord Costume Thread

Anyone got any leads on the electronics for the earpiece? I got the one off of Shapeways. It has a compartment that could house two batteries but now I'm thinking there needs to be a resistor involved somewhere. Also having a hard time trying to find a micro ON/OFF switch. Radio Shack had them but far too big.

How big is the buckle on your belt?

This is the exact belt I slide the holsters onto, I got the brown one.

This is what it currently looks like when everything is oriented to put the stock buckle in front.

If I turn it all around that space between the holsters would be in front, and maybe I could make a piece to just slide over it. But I still gotta figure out how I'd make that if I go that route.

Also, I am looking for recommendations on motorcycle pants. Anyone know of a particularly good model? Preferably in Amazon, since I have prime-shipping and all that. Probably the only way to get reasonably good pants between now and then.

Ahoy Cap'n!

The switches I designed the earpieces around were these lovely little blighters, if I recall correctly. And yes, a resistor is not a terrible idea, but 3V from coin cells won't kill a red LED too quickly either. I think I simply used a 100 ohm one, but don't hold me to that. It dims the light a little bit but also (in theory) means the LED should last a fair bit longer... though even on the ones I haven't put a resistor in, I have yet to have a burnout.

This may help?

It is the only prototype I have handy at the moment. I've been selling all my finished ones as i cast them.

You just need something on the back of the cover to connect the two batteries when sealed.

I'm in a pickle guys, and I'm asking for help.

I need some quick and easy rockets. I was recommended some Capt America binoculars (amazon). If anyone has done this route, love to hear it. If anyone has another idea, love to hear it. Also would appreciate hearing methods of attachment. It'll be attaching to vinyl which is cinched to my leg by elastic in the back, so can't be anything to heavy. I'm willing to cut into my covers if i need

I used Dollar store binoculars with empty coffee creamer cups attached to the top. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1438753465.675698.jpg
Pipe fittings on the bottoms.

I ran elastic bands around the middle of the binoculars to slip over the spats.

Not screen accurate, but looks good enough from a distance.

I was going to do that originally, but toy binocs are like hens teeth in my town or something.

So I ended up ordering these from Amazon on recommendation.

I think I can just unscrew or cut off the handle, and the disc-cover. And have a basic rocket body.

Also following this, as I also picked one of your models up from shapeways (which BTW, fits behind my ginormous ears better than any blue tooth I've ever had).

What size/model# number are the coin cells designed to fit this? Or are all the 3v the same size?

Yep. I bought a couple pairs of these on Amazon and have deconstructed one. You can definitely remove the middle handle section. I was going to put some mini flashlight guts in them but it's not working. And it's a bear getting the ends separated from the binoc tubes anyway!

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it very much.

I might just drill a hole in the side that faces my leg somewhere and drop in some small glow sticks or something for a light effect. Another local Star-Lord did something similar, using red glow-bracelets to light up his mask eyes. Temporary, but effective.

The resistor on the ear piece also helps dim down the LED. I found it particularly bright on the small LED I used. If you know the specs on your LED, you can figure out the proper size of resister with an LED calculator easily found through Google.

As for a buckle idea. I cast several in plastic and metal. The metal ones had loops on the back and the plastic ones do as well but you can shear those off and use Velcro to attach it to any buckle for a quick fix. Just an idea.

Glad to hear it fits! :D I'm surprised at how much I can do with the thing on, myself. I wear glasses and a wig when I'm doing the Star Lord thing and it still hangs in there.

The batteries are AG-10 coin cells. All coin cells are not the same size, and these are only 1.5v, wired in series, to produce 3v. They're cheap and available at most drug stores which is why I picked 'em, though you can also buy tons of them at a time from internet retailers.

I might be able to purchase a buckle if my budget allows it. If I can't I'll probably whip something good enough from some EVA floormat scraps.

In fact that might work better for my build since it's going to be a vinyl sleeve and the lighter the better. Eventually I'll want a real leather belt and a real buckle though.

Also, still looking for motorcycle pants recommendations. Preferably through amazon from anyone who has one to recommend. I have to order today if possible.

And does anyone have a recommendation for gluing vinyl to foam?

Hey everyone, wondering if I can get a measurement.

Does anyone have one of DannyL's short jackets in medium or large?

Wondering what the length of the jacket is from the bottom of the collar to the waistline.

Put this piece together, it's just waxed thread with sewing thread wrapped round, then glued at the back. Just need to figure out how to whether the zip now so it looks darker, far too shiny at the momentImageUploadedByTapatalk1438964408.782539.jpg

You can make brass plating darken slightly by roughing it a bit with a scotch brite pad, cleaning it off with a paper towel wet with salt water, and let time do its business over the next couple days.

That looks really good. I'm currently waiting on some bits I've ordered to do this myself.

Can I ask how you glued it and what glue you used please?

Also, I don't know if this has been mentioned in the last 63 pages, but these guys do a pretty decent Star Lord jacket, if you've got the cash.

Thanks, probably going to do a burgundy/dark red thread over the top as it seems the thread wrap doesn't go all the way to the end.. I used E-6000 (I think it's called)

That's awesome, cheers. Can I also ask, did you just use a blob of glue to hold the end of the wrapped thread in place at the back or did you coat the leather with E-6000 then wrap the thread around it?

I've been wearing my coat now for a few weeks and I've found that the zip has lost all of it's new shine and looks much better.

Just a tiny blob (more like a dot) of glue on the back as you mentioned to hold the wrap, just make sure the wrap is done tight, seems to be holding up well.

Oh nice, can you share a photo of the worn in zipper? [emoji4]

Anyone got the height and width of the buckle?

I need it to make a temporary foam buckle for upcoming con.

Also, still looking for anyone with Danny's short-jacket in medium who would would be willing to provide a measurement. The back of the jacket from the bottom of the collar to the very bottom of the waistline. I need to know how far down it would hang on me. I didn't see it in the measurement charts in his run-topic.

Thanks, everyone.
