The Definitive CW Arrow Thread

It's a fully functional bow, but the weights are meant for a kid for sure.

I have fired mine a number of times and it's pretty fun!

Of course it's functional, just not very powerful.

Haha okay cool! That's what I figured. I took some archery lessons (always been interested in archery, but just found out there was a range about 45 mins from my house) recently and really enjoyed it. Just wanted to make sure the Ragim doesn't like snap under the weight of an adult. Thanks!

Sorry for all the questions (and thanks for the quick answers) but I have another. So obviously I plan on wearing this to cons, but my concern is the bow. I'm making the season 1 bow, and I just wanna know if it's con safe as-is (boat accessories notwithstanding). Surely some of you have already taken yours to cons, so just wondering how that was handled. Obviously each con has their own rules, but in general, should the bow be okay as long as it's not actually fired?

Fun stroy about bows and arrows:

On the way to Heroes Con I was spotted on the train platforms with my full gear. At the next stop I was approached by cops who took what I had VERY seriously. Being dressed the way I was too I looked pretty damn dangerous to them. They checked me out and okayed me in the following ways:

I didn't use any arrow heads from the show. I took pencil top erasers and sprayed them with some chrome collared spraypaint. I put these on my wooden dowel rod arrows (painted of course) and just had nocks and fletches glued on. My arm arrows were glue-gunned into the arm quiver, and of course all arrows had the pencil tips. I was very convencing, but, also safer.

If you go to a con, make sure you keep ANY tips only for photo shoots. Think of this way: even with the arm arrowheads sanded WAY DOWN you still could really cut someone with them. Not cool.

I thought about, and never got to, making those arm arrows out of paper foam and exacto knife cutting skills to make very convincing foam ones.

The bow isn't to much a problem so long as you tote it with you and NEVER drawl but for a photo with anyone around you.

But you were using the actual bow, not a replica or one with fabricated limbs, and the con allowed it? I don't plan on using any real arrowheads. Just painted foam or cardboard for the few that I'll need.

Real bow, and the crossbow my girlfriend carried was just a spray-painted Nerf Zombie model.

The bow I would sling on your shoulder or semi-use as a walking stick when going threw security. just look confident you're having fun and all will be fine.

Great, thanks. Everyone is saying otherwise, but I can't imagine why the bow would be that dangerous so long as you have nothing to fire. I emailed the con about it and I'm just waiting to hear back.

If it helps, NEVER say its a real bow to security. Make it as if ALL of your stuff is a prop or props. and mess with your bows and such as you're saying it. Helped keep the real coppers off me for sure when I was searched for a sec. (well, made sure stuff was fake. not "searched" )

hello, how long the shafts on 'forearm? and where can I buy them? (Name, model, etc. ..)

thanks :)
I made my own out of wooden dowels and sprayed a carbon-like finish on them. Fletches were real and the nocks were either placed ina drilled-area on the "shaft" or I had them superglued on the tops.

My arm ones were about 7 inches or so. fake heads on them for conning, real for photo shoots. There is a picture on page

It's not cause they think your some assassin from ra's al ghul clan with crazy ninja archer skills, it's because the Bow could be used as a Melee weapon, i stripped my Real Compound bow down for fan expo took off most strings and attachtments i got stopped and asked so many times by security (was even escorted one of those in charge of the expo)

lol even a cop after walking one minute out of my grandma's place he said it looked fine and apperciated that i stripped the bow best i could.

I'm glad they did not take it from me other wise i never would have got it signed by stephen..

Pinder, I know you already said that you made your mask from 7oz veg tanned leather but how exactly did you MAKE it? Like shaping and line details?

Prim. Will you be able to get suits out before nycc? In October

Archer, the mask would be cut to shape and scored, wet and then laid across your face pushing in all the nooks and crevaces of your face. You may have to do it multiple times. When it dries it will be a near perfect fit.

Stonecold, I cannot make ANY promises, but hoping for availability in a few weeks

Thanks prim. Stephen Amell will be at nycc and my bow is near done. I want THE arrow costume.

Thanks Prim [emoji1] should I add the lines and designs during that time? I really appreciate it.

I actually used 3-4oz leather. 7oz would be WAY too heavy duty.

I just wet formed the leather to my face and held it there until it dried, slowly pressing and shaping where needed. I cheated and used a hairdryer on low to help speed up the process.

The details were done before wet forming. I just got the leather slightly damp (casing) and used a small blunt tool to emboss the lines in.

There are lots of really good leather mask tutorials online if you look around. Thats where I started as I'm somewhat new to leather work.

Keep in mind it took about 12 or so patterns to get the basic shape of the mask. I started with paper and moved to 3mm foamies once I got closer to the final pattern. Foamies are an excellent (and cheap!) solution for pattern making for veg tanned leather projects.

Do you if there is a small amount of the 3-4oz online? All i can find is pieces that are huge.

eBay typically has some smaller pieces of leather if you're not looking for a full hide. I found this one quickly, though I cannot vouch for the seller at all. http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-4-oz-Veg-...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item58aa5b2a63

If you have one near you, I'd suggest going into a Tandy Leather and asking them what they have. The one I go to has a discount table where I've picked up a 3-4oz shoulder for $15. It has quite a few imperfections (hence the discount), but I can easily cut around them for small items.
