The Adjustment Bureau

I finally saw The Adjustment Bureau over the weekend, and really enjoyed it. A relatively simple premise that could have gone horribly awry at any moment, but didn't thanks to filmmakers who didn't feel the need to explain every little thing--give the audience enough to understand the basics of what's happening, and let them come to their own conclusions about the rest. Buckets of chemistry between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt really help the romance aspects of the story (which, given the premise, are surprisingly minimal), solid performances from the entire cast, and consistent pacing--every scene pushes the story along without dragging or being rushed; no wasted footage here. It may not be entirely unpredictable, but it's still a fun ride.

I just watched this yesterday and here were my thoughts (as posted to Facebook):

Just watched the Adjustment Bureau. Was one of the best and most compelling movies I have seen in a while that really had me doing a bit of introspection... right up until the last 20 minutes that just turned into utterly banal hippy Hollywood garbage. Way to send ALL the wrong messages once again and undermine everything that is commendable and honorable. Shame on you for ruining an amazing film.

Wow, I just saw this...fantastic. Gotta disagree with you on the end, Art...I see why some were dis-satisfied, but I think the film was strong enough to withstand what some might consider too pat a resolution, and frankly the other alternative would have been an even bigger letdown than the one we got, which I say is the lesser of two evils.

I thought the idea of it was interesting, and I liked way the plans built up throughout the movie until they culminated in the chase scenes. But I agree with Art. I felt like the resolution was too much of a deus ex machina, and it made me wonder why the chairman really cared about them enough to rewrite their futures in the first place, if he was only going to go back to the original plan in the end.
