the absolute BEST Star Trek tunics ?

At least we don't ban people for speaking their mind. We believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, and open discussion is encouraged, not discouraged. it's better to agree to disagree, than to make people disappear because they question your view of things. That's why the new board was created. There's no dictator calling all the shots. It's an open forum, and more importantly, it's a COMMUNITY.

My girlfriend Marlena Moreau who posts alot over at ASAP in the uniform section makes fantasticly accurate tunics.
She uses real velour and does exacting work, down to the tinyest detail.
I have one of her "Kirk" tunics that she fit to me, and I can just get it on by myself, like a glove.
Anyway, she's reading here at the RPF on my ID and wants to post some pics for you to see, so I turn it over to Marlena...
later,
Ron

Hi, I love talking Star trek uniforms, and this place looks exciting, I'll share with you guys some pics of my work.
I have TOS tunics available, as well as "kirk' wraps and Charlie X jackets, and other TOS uniform stuff, if you're interested in more info, PM RShanko here, and I'll get back to you.
Nice to meet you all,

Marlena

Here's a gold/green velour Kirk tunic we sold on ebay with one of Ron's 'glass V3s and weapon belt.
It's on it's way to Britain now.

Okay, so I'm no expert on Trek tunics, but do have a few insights that will hopefully assist in the recreation of thinking...
(Dang this is a long forum to catch up on.)

Rod.com should have the most accurate available braid and insignias from the access Majel had to materials used in the productions. Now, having said that, JoeK also had great access to Trek and Western Costume and should also have good replicas.
Joe and friends are now working on their own fan productions with him as captain of the Excelsior (a la New Voyages.) Yet I digress...

Bill Theiss was well known for custom making things and also finding very obscure fabrics from arund the world.
For example, the Romulan costumes seen in 1st season TNG were fabric he had picked up in France many. many years before. That's why, later in the series there was no more of it and Romulans wore similar but different patterns.
Also, the virtually every piece of fabric used on Next Gen was custom colored. I would expect that the TOS wardrobe was as well, since they wanteed bright vivid colors to help sell color television sets.
Bill also used hidden zippers whenever he could and always strove for unique textures so that fabrics wouldn't look like 20th century Earth.
The original uniforms for TOS were in a room above TNG wardrobe up until about a month after Enterprise was cancelled.
They had access to many examples for the DS9 episode and I suspect the principle differences you see in color are strictly due to lighting, camera and film technology and the differences between Jerry Finnerman and Marvin Rush as cinematographers. Now Marvin is a fanatic and no doubt did whatever he could to replicate the TOS lighting but the whole process was different by then (negative, transferred to digital video, edited and then printed to film.)
Also remember that the Original Series had virtually zero budget. Wardrobe was always recycled and if someone was cast and not able to make a fitting, it was fit onto a "double" as best as they could. Also sometimes decisions are/were made at the last minute and a different uniform would be grabbed if it fir better with artistic license taking a back seat (engineering lieutnenant in ensign sciences uniform, for example - probably all they had that fit and no time (=money) for changes.

A short story about the wrap arounds (maybe you have heard a million times already...):
Bill (Theiss) created the green wrap around for Shatner because he had a "high ribcage" and Theiss felt that it made him look fat, when he wasn't (talking early here.) He knew that the diagonal line would help disguise this and so created the alternate captain's uniform.
I fear that if I got one of these nowadays, I'd need a much larger diagonal line... :D

Oh yeah, and Bill (T) called the Tholian costumes "Penis suits."

My experience is more recent then TOS but hopefully I can help shed some light on some of these things, if/when possible.

The screen caps are fantastic, people here certainly have good eyes for the details.

I wanted a "Spock shirt" so badly as a child - until my mom told me they were velour, which was way too hot for me to ever wear.
So, she sewed a (Lincoln Enterprises) captain's insignia onto my wallet, which I could flip open like a communicator. :rolleyes

Funny about the wallet.

Interesting story, and theories, however Roddenberry sells Kathy Pillsberry's braid, which we found to be of a good quality for several reasons which we won't get into yet, but speaking of patterns being accurate, there are major problems with the fit of some or all of the ones currently available. We have some that are better than others, but in the end had to correct the lines so the tunic both fits like the originals and the seams are in the same places.

I can just get my tunic on and off by myself, it fits like a glove.

The colors are a whole other story, with some guys claiming the 1st season velour command tunics weren't green at all, just gold...hahaha.

Same velour tunic, different light.

"Shore Leave" shows just how green they were, from the first act to the last. The odd gold/green did change color, or tint according to lighting and angle, but they were greenish.
We love star Trek and want to share our love of the show with all who are interested, by having really accurate uniforms available to collectors should they require the best currently around, personally having seen the velour tunics above in person, I know they are as accurate as can be found anywhere. My Sweetie Marlena made the accurate patterns and sews them. She's working on real nice TOS pants now with the lil sparkles.

Being so into Trek, our family makes short Star Trek films, this led into my intrest in making phasers.
I made fiberglass phasers, like those originally used ones we saw on TV. Collectors started asking for them, so I made fiberglass phaser kits for a while, these I made as accurate as possible, my last bunch, the V3 was claimed by some to be far more like a screenused phaser than the acclaimed MM, they are no longer available.

It's an interesting hobby we have... really it's a passion..

Vaderman: You'd think that Rodd.com/Majel/LincolnEnterprises, ought to have the most accurate insignias and braids... but I think they've changed over the decades due to "copies of copies" syndrome. The latest Rodd.com patches are a little too big and straight-sided.

Shanko: great tunics. But you might want to look into wearing a "screen accurate" black T-shirt under that thing. ;)

And what about regulation Star Fleet boxers? :p

But seriously, great tunics, RShanko. Your ladyfriend (the Captain's Woman?) is quite skilled, and you wear the tunics well. :thumbsup

I've got a couple sets of brand new, vintage Lincoln Enterprises insignias from about 1972 - I always thought that the gold was embroidered like the black, but (as I'm sure you guys already know) the gold is "leatherette".

Anyway, I'm selling one set of the insignias for $20.00 per badge.
Let me know if you're interested.

Russ
