the absolute BEST Star Trek tunics ?

That's the second season wrap from Star Trek - The Experience. Too bad it's only a reproduction. Interesting how "olive" the fabric they chose for it is. The sparkle fabric the pants are made from looks just like the one we're using...

Hey Karl, let's see a pic of you wearing that bad boy.
The wrap tunic above is from ST The Experince. I always have thought it looked a little fake, the fabric seemed wierd to me.

Hey Karl, let's see a pic of you wearing that bad boy.[/b]

Sorry, not gonna happen. My physique is a bit too... Shatneresque. :(

On the STTE Wrap, it looks like the one Archer wore in "In a Mirror Darkly"

STE_IAMD_Archerphasercomm.jpg

... same too-high "V" neck, doesn't look like Shatner's deep-V version.

I've seen better fan-made wraps than the one at the Experiance.

I like the material it is made of though.

The one at the Vegas Hilton just looks all wrong to me. I've seen it twice and every time I think...nah.
Come on Karl. Stride with pride, brother. I want a total geek shot like that dude above with the Playmates phaser. ;)

GM
you have mail ....

the wrap at the ST Experience I'll agree is off... ALOT but most I'm sure who go there wouldn't nit pick as much as we do .

Hey I got my GeneralMayhem tunic today. :D

It looks great, he did a fine job. Very good construction. All the seams are right where they should be, proportions, everything looks spot on.

The color is not quite as orange as in the pix he originally posted. Probably not identical to screenused either, but what can you do. Also the velour doesn't have the subtle "glittery" effect of the screenused material.

My only issue (and it's minor) is the collar, which droops a little in front. Probably my neck measurement was a little generous. Oh well, better too loose than too tight.

from the pictures when its hanging and the cuffs look more flat it looks like ALOT of dashes, but when K has it on, it doesn't look like there are as much ..

nicely done

picked up the fabric I bought today from micdavis... thanks .

for those that haven't read or seen the pictures that I've posted on some other forums --

someone suggested watermarking the pictures to deter the dishonest who use the internet...

sorry for the crappy pictures, the only digicamera I have is on my camcorder... taken in direct sunlight

all I know about this fabric is that it was purchased 10 years ago... I'll find out more later
The JK braid that came with the fabric must be an older braid as its 3 times as long as the braids I just reveived from JK from an eBay auction.... I notice that they are abit thinner as well...

notice how the bag says to use *8* dashes for a command uniform?

I had planned for 10 on each sleeve, but with the larger sizing, to keep the spacing right, I actually ended up using 11.
[/b]

Actually the spacing of the dashes is a bit variable on mine... at some points the dashes are one "S-shape" apart (that is, very tight), but at this point (shown in the photo) the dashes are nearly a whole dash-width apart.

Handmade, don't ya know.

Dave,

Here's how to do a burn test on the fabric:

1. Cut small swatches of each fabric you want to test.

Two-inch squares are fine.

2. Place a swatch in your fireproof container and ignite a corner of the fabric.

3. Pay attention to the odor of the smoke.

-Cotton smells like burning paper.

-An odor similar to burning hair or feathers indicates wool or silk fibers, but silk doesn't always burn as easily as wool.

-A darkish plume of smoke that smells like chemicals or burning plastic probably means the fabric is a cotton/polyester blend.

4. Let the ashes cool and examine them.

-Cotton ashes are soft and fine. They turn to dust when touched.

-Black, brittle remants that crush between your fingers indicate wool.

-Hard lumps are the remains of melted synthetic fibers.

5. Unravel a clump of threads from another small swatch of the fabric. Hold the clump with tweezers and slowly move a small flame towards the clump.

-Cotton fibers ignite as the flame draws near.

-Synthetic fibers curl away from the heat and tend to "melt."

To see exactly how each type of fabric reacts, do experimental burn tests on fabrics you know are made from cotton, cotton/polyester blends, wool and other fibers.

Fabrics Sometimes Mistaken for Cotton
Linen is simlar to cotton but burns more slowly.

Rayon will burn after the flame is pulled away, and although it has an odor similar to cotton/paper, it does not have an afterglow after removing it from the flame. Cotton does produce an afterglow.

GM:

Thanks for the fascinating burn test instructions. This is great stuff. :thumbsup

Reminds me a little of the "Unknowns" experiment we did in high school science, in which we were given eight test tubes containing small amounts of unknown substances and instructed to identify them by means of experimentation. There wasn't much in each tube, so we couldn't afford to make too many mistakes.

One kid got down to the last bits of a white crystalline substance in one of his tubes and, as a final test, figuring that it was sodium chloride, ate it. :unsure

Ah, high school. :p

{EDIT} P.S. Dave, nice materials. Thanks for sharing pics.
