TFA Resistance X-Wing Markings Discussion

This may have been discussed before - I apologize if so.

But what have you all found to be the best blue for this? The large scale model at Disney had a slightly dusty faded blue. The pre-painted kits have a more royal or electric blue that is too bold.

Thoughts?

Today I grabbed a can of this, but not sure if its ideal:

Re: TFA Resistance X-Wing Blue Color

I think if you're dealing with ships that have seen a lot of hard usage, the colors are going to vary from one to the other, so if you're in the general ballpark, you're probably fine! Maybe even paint some panels light or darker, it'll make it seem as if panels were replaced or repaired with newer ones. Kinda like when you see someone driving a car with a fender that came from the junkyard and doesn't quite match.....

Re: TFA Resistance X-Wing Blue Color

I mixed my own shade of blue and hand painted all the blue panels. The only blue decals are the hash marks on the wing trailing edges.

Are these wing stripes accurate? The don't match the pre-painted model kits (Revell or Bandai)

I dunno. All I have are are concept art & promo renders. It looks like there are supposed to be light gray stripes for the 'missing' marks.

Unfortunately I don't think they put too much thought into the stripes. Unlike the stripes on the X-wings in a new hope, these all seem to have the same number 3 blue and two grey. I haven't seen enough screen shots in the film to even tell if there was any difference to the x-wings shown, or if they were simply copy and paste

Although I think if I was to paint up multiple of these, I would go to the A new hope scheme and put the number of blue stripes as the x's number

So for example, if it was Blue 3, it would have 3 blue stripes, and 2 light grey in the other spots. Blue 2 would have 2 blue stripes and 3 grey etc...

PH, the pic you posted seems to have a rectangular blue panel, the large one, while all others has it as more of a wedge shape as Mike's picture illustrates with the orange panel.

My thoughts exactly. The original X-Wing used the stripes to designate individual craft/pilots, the new ones seem to be perhaps squadron markings...

Nice looking paint jobs! I'd go with a custom mix here, probably cobalt blue (Testors) with some light grey.

$5 says the ships in the movie are copy paste. The texture maps on Poe's black X-Wing are mirrored. I always look for this stuff and never spotted any cheats like that in Star Wars until this movie (which I loved regardless!).

Even the colors are just contrasted to the opposite on his. it's like someone just hit a button to flip all the colors to their opposite contrasted color and didn't even bother changing much else. The azure stripes get flipped to orange, white base becomes black, dark grey marks become a light silver etc...:lol

Kind of lazy design

updated...

To demonstrate, I took this picture of Poe's X-wing and used the Invert Color option in MSPaint to invert the colors, and lo and behold...look familiar

Whoah! I hadn't caught that! That blue is pretty much a perfect match! I wonder if the black X-Wing color scheme came about as a result of someone inverting by accident or something. What are the chances that they really did this with the maps?

I can see it now.

JJ - "we need a hero x-wing. It's got to somehow be unique though"

CGI artist - "hmmm...lets see...Invert colors...and...done"

:lol

Ten to one JJ didn't like the black wings on the TIEs, so they just inverted the colors and Lo! they started playing with other stuff as well. Besides, black colors make Poe's X-Wing more 'stealthy' for his clandestine meetings...
