TFA Graflex Research (That's a Graflex, right? Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

That looks about right. I had to move the thin traces a bit more to the right on my layout, let me know what you think...

I could also do two versions on this card, one on front, one on back.

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

I think the traces on the sides shouldn't go all the way until the edges but should leave a stroke of free board.

yyyeah, on the wired shot, I can see how there'd be a sliver of board visible between the edge of the card and the outermost thick traces.. Not hard to do.

Hey Bradley. The new TFA board does remind me of your very first ESB board you made with silver traces ... only TFA seems mirrored now :)

I agree with all your observations. The FX clamp is 0.4mm thick. I think the sheet metal used (probably a stainless steel) is thinner, maybe 0.2mm. And indeed all details are sharper than the FX clamps. And if the FX clamps were used, they would have kept the bend edges underneath the bars for easy and secure assembly. This to me also shows that a custom part was used.

I don't know if the versions we've seen thus far are very different from each other, but I agree that waiting for the Blu-ray is best. But I'm not sure if I want to wait for that. I already started working on the clamp cover and edge connector card.

So far, my gut feeling is that the photo in Wired (same as in the Visual Dictionary) is the hero saber:

The wired photo could be Finn's version, with the smaller Rounded at the top T tracks. But when Rey has the saber the T tracks are different. More squared at the top and bottom and there is no space at the base of the saber. Finn's version seems to have space at the top and bottom. There are definitely more than one version of the hero saber on screen which means you're going to have to make mor kits!:lol Until we get Blu Ray shot's who knows how many on screen sabers were used.

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

just a quick question regarding the band because i may have missed something in this giant thread -

so was this a custom made band without the graflex logo, or was there a sheet of thin metal (with just the etched lines) wrapped around an original graflex band to cover the word GRAFLEX?

As far as the actual movie saber goes, at this point we don't know exactly other than there is no logo on the screen used saber.

Based on the Wired saber, and the Disney sabers, either/both MR clamps or custom cut metal covers were used over real Graflex clamps.

Dont know if this has been mentioned before, but if you look at the close up "Wired Pic" of the clamp ( a few posts back) you can pretty clearly see a piece of sheet metal wrapped around the clamp. look inside the square cutouts on the clamp and along the edge of the clamp...you can see a seam line where the pieces oif metal meet.

We're just sure if that's a custom cut piece of metal, or an MR clamp, over a real clamp.

The MR clamp is ever so slightly oversized so the cutouts won't line up exactly.

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

Does anyone know if any existing T tracks will work with this saber or is the placement of the slot and length different?

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

They're pretty much completely different, although I will defer to our T track meistro Roy. The length / slot / profile look different than ESB to me though.

Yeah, profile looks different and we're trying to figure out the length. Some sabers show a 1/8 inch gap at both ends (short of the bottom tube) while other sabers seem to show longer grips.

:) yes, the slots are shorter and placed slightly further from the edge. It was already mentioned somewhere before in this enormous thread.

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

Thanks guys.
Im im just getting back into the prop game due to the new SW film.
I used to take part in saber discussion threads back in the day...now i feel like a newb. Lol

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

I'm shocked that there's no Chinese or Indian company making graflex replicas by the thousands and selling them for $60 each at this point. They can't be that expensive to produce. It's just a flashlight after all.
