The version without the lips and nose looks freakier.
"I'm just a little turtle. AH-HEE HEE! Shamone!"
"It's not the fact they don't look like they used to, it's that they don't look much like turtles, and don't look like they're capable of being ninja-like."
What iteration of the Ninja Turtles HAVE looked like turtles. The original Mirage Turtles looked the closest. I also don't get the size being a problem. Have you seen how big BATMAN is in some incarnations!? Yet he manages the whole urban ninja thing well.
Obviously none of them have looked like realistic turtles, nor would I expect them to, being mutated anthropomorphized characters and all.
The problem is that turtles have more tapered faces with sideward facing eyes, and they've tried to create these ninja turtles with a human-like face with the front facing eyes (as previous ninja turtles have), but then they tack a nose on there for a turtle nose, which looks off. It's probably technically closer to a real turtle, but it doesn't well represent the features and contours of a turtle as closely as having the more inconspicuous nostrils on there did on previous incarnations.
And lips! Maybe they felt human lips were necessary for the lip movement to look realistic, but it makes it too human, and approaches the uncanny valley, which makes them look downright creepy.
And their bodies are also too human. They're top heavy, with bulging muscles, and tapered bodies. Turtles have rounded bodies. Previous incarnations have had the more obvious front shell to look like a turtle. With the smaller front shell, plus all of the junk they're wearing, they look more like frogs than turtles.
Ninjas are supposed to be stealthy, and light footed, and be able to hide in the shadows. The trailer shows a clumsy 8 foot tall, 2 ton creature steamrolling right through a HUMMER. That is about as un-ninja like as it gets! :lol Maybe those years of a pizza-only diet have finally caught up with them. Not sure how they're getting through that manhole cover now.......
