Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [Completed!]

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

I did a little work on the palm today. The curved panel I was trying ended up hitting the finger tips when they closed. I ended up simplifying it. Since I am going to keep the palm as a removeable panel, the angled panel ended up working better anyhow.

Also, after receiving some constructive feedback from some fellow costumers, you will be glad to hear I am making myself a new thumb. It is currently a copy of a pinky finger. I have redesigned it to be unique. It is slightly shorter now and only has two knuckles. It should be much less finger-like now. Much better.

As always, looking good bro. I hope you'll eventually offer a kit...

I will probably offer the STL's for sale and personal use. I may make kits in the future. Time is kind of tight though, it would be a night and weekend operation for me, so that is still up in the air.

I don't know if you want to sell anything; GW is extremely protective of their intellectual property.

Not if it's sold as something like "Ham Fist kit", or something like that.

On with the build!!!

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

The new thumb is printed and installed. I must admit it is a marked improvement. It looks much more natural with two joints. I have embellishments to make, but the real construction is done.

I plan on making a trip to the hardware store this weekend to begin gathering paint and supplies needed for finishing. I have elected to NOT harden the entire suit. After a great deal of thought I have decided that a hard coating would add too much additional weight. The decreased flexibility would also be a detriment. I fully expect to bump into things and with pieces this large, the fear of cracking would be too great. I will instead be going the plasti-dip route. It comes in a nice blue that will serve as a good base color and remain rather flexible.

They certainly are. I would not be selling any completed power fists though, only my articulated fingers. Unless their IP encompasses all robot-like fingers, I don't expect any legal trouble. However if I get a C&D letter I will let you know.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

The new hand looks much more realistic. Is it still moved by/with the index finger?

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

The new improved hand looks great. If you ignore the other items in the photo that add scale then the hand is very close to normal proportions. I'm interested to see how it looks moving with the new thumb. Are you doing another video? Thanks again for the daily updates.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

The hand looks amazing bro, looking forwRd to see some color on it ;)

I am cleaning up seams tonight and tomorrow and adding the final detail to the powerfist. Paint will start going down very soon.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

It was a fun day today. I did what will probably be my last full test of the costume until after it's all finished. After tonight everything is being broken down for painting to begin. I am in the process of cleaning up all my seams already. A rough grit sandpaper does a great job of removing the unevenness, but I will also seal the seams with silicone before paint.

Detail work is getting finished and I believe we will start seeing color in the next week or so. HEre is a video link and a wall of pictures for your pleasure.

Looking amazing as always!

But can I interject just for a second...Have you tested painting over your silicone sealant yet? When I was doing mock-ups for my build, I had some bathroom/kitchen silicone sealant laying around that I tried for filling the seams. Granted, it makes easy work of turning gaps into smooth transitions, but I couldn't for the life of me get anything to stick to it. It was marked as "Paintable" but it was anything but. Paint just wiped and or flaked away, and if it flexed at all, forget about anything that was on top of it.

I've since started using an acrylic-latex based (it's sold under the ALEX name, made by DAP) and it's 100% better at holding pretty much any paint you throw at it. It doesn't flex as much as the silicone does once it's set, but it's enough to keep it from coming apart if your seams are sturdy to begin with (I also back most of the heavier use seams with an extra bead of hot-glue, just to be on the safe side. The great thing about the ALEX is you can wipe most of it away with a damp sponge. I use a small damp foam paint brush to get into those really tight corners and it gives it a pretty good edge as well.

I'm super stoked to see this painted up and detailed...

Thanks man. Thats great advice and a good heads up. Thankfully I am really cautious. I have two varieties of caulk. As it happens one of them is an alex. I will be testing everything before it touches my work though, don't you worry :)

Here is some power fist detail progress as a treat.

I've seen a space marine in real live here in the Netherlands a few years back, but yours is so much better. I wish I had the time for a build like this.

Can't wait for the first paint pics.

That power fist makes me so unreasonably happy to look at, especially when i see it on you without the rest of the armor. Something about one giant hand that appeals to my sensibilities.
