Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [Completed!]

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Good news everyone! The fingers are working!

I was rather bummed out after the mark II fingers turned out to be too heavy and thusly not functional. There was significant time and effort put into them. That let-down resulted in another 15+ hours 3D modeling new, lighter fingers. This is the result. My mark III fingers. They have the same dimensions as the mark II and the pieces are mostly interchangeable. The knuckles are still the mark II pieces.

The mark III digits print out in pieces. Each piece is printed flat. They are notched to fit together snugly. After printing I bond the pieces together with acetone. The result is a ~45% savings in weight. I should have a functional/wearable hand in the coming week.

Here is a test video and some pictures:

This is looking fantastic, you'll have to offer kits when you're done. I'm confused as to what the little arched bridges are though, are they just for strength? Seems to me like you could cut some of them out to save of a bit more weight.

Those serve double duty. They are pass-throughs/tie down for elastic and the also fit into slots on the sidewalls to facilitate construction. They increase rigidity and make life easier when bonding the pieces with acetone.

Nice! *I know it was a bummer, but going back and getting this level of weight reduction is making me cheer you on even more :)
Thanks! Love the encouragement from everyone. Printing is going well. I'm going to try and have a wearable version mocked up this weekend... hopefully!

I have another video update and a few pictures for you tonight. 3 fingers are now complete with the 4th being printed as I write this. I have the completed fingers rigged up with elastic and pull strings for now so I can play with it. Enjoy!

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Tonights update includes more of my most favorite building method. HOT GLUE! Ugh, and I thought I was done with that for a while.

The index finger has finally finished and all four fingers are done. Only the thumb remains. I am still on the fence about placement and scale so I am holding off on printing that for a short while. I will be better able to decide once I see what kind of space I have to work with.

I also printed out Henrik's pattern for the powerfist body. Fits like a glove, LOL. For real though, it fits nicely over the forearm and accommodates the fingers really well. ITs starting to look very power-fist-ish.

Dude this is looking amazing, I'm following your instructions on how to build it and just bought the stuff I'll need for it, just curious how tall are you cause I'm wandering how much difference I'll need to make to theepakura files?

I am 6' tall. In costume I am roughly 7'. My advice would be just to build the suit in the scale you want it in. Then worry about making yourself fit into it. Odds are space marine armor is going to be pretty roomy for us non-augmented humans.

This is true lol, thanks for the info mate I look forward to seeing the finished piece :)

I'm enjoying this build immensely and love seeing the powerfist come together. Quick question, what's the hairspray for? Are you sealing it with that or does that just happen to be there?

Good eye. I spray it on the printer bed from time to time to get the parts to stick better and stay flat while printing.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

I did some work on the powerfist this evening. Mainly I was able to get the forearm mount sorted out. Ladies and gentlemen, it is now a wearable prop! Sweet.

I have ditched the 2:1 pulley and gear system. They worked, but the pull was too hard for me to manage for a long period of time. I have switched to an even simpler solution, a humble finger extension. Not as tricky as the pulley or gear, but who cares... it works. The thumb is the next thing on my to-do list. I am going to start tackling that this weekend.

Oh I made a video too:

Not bad bro. Hopefully you'll eventually offer kits...

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

That powerfist is so hilariously huge and awesome. Thanks for sharing, I'm really enjoying watching this come together.
