Superman: Legacy

Got tix for Saturday!

I liked Man of Steel, but didn’t love… I’ve always been a “corny Superman”, guy… and love Gunn… so I’m hopeful.

Grabbed all star Superman to read after. I’m stoked for this.

I saw the early screening. The whole point of this movie is that sincerity and hopefulness are cool. It’s a movie a good dad would write for his kids.

It feels like the last few episodes of a season-long arc; you just kind of drop in to Clark’s very bad day, because absolutely nobody needs introduction to the primary characters.

Also, comics accurate Jimmy Olsen.

I loved it. Seeing it again tomorrow.

There’s a couple of spots with jokes for the adults (some of Guy’s constructs, a few spoilery aspects), and one particular moment of violence that is only Marvel-level graphic that drives the plot; it’s nothing worse than you’d see on early evening tv. Other aspects - like Cat Grant - are just because comics. JG reined himself in pretty well because of what he was going for. As someone who has been following him since The Specials, his assessment that it’s not a movie he could have or would have made pre-Covid seems true.

Thumbs up.
Not perfect, but entertaining.

It starts in the middle of a timeline.

I liked the end credits lookin all old school.

Lois starts off very unlikable.

Mr. Terrific was terrific, but he gets a bit more panicked than I would expect. His T spheres aren't constantly quizing him.

Hawkgirl was fun.

Fillion as Guy, HE GETS IT!!!

Stay til the very end

I'd watch it again.

Just got back, really loved it!

I'm the guy who is a Superman snob: Christopher Reeve is my Superman. Zach Snyder nearly destroyed Superman for me. But this movie did a good job of telling a new story and taking the write angle.

Some writers have complained about how Superman is so strong and invincible it's hard to write for him. They're wrong. Superman has many weaknesses, and this movie exploits them all.

Most importantly, they got the Kent family right. The film makes the right points in the right ways about why he is Super. Bravo.

Is it "woke"? Not really. One could drag their own politics into a viewing if they want, but political preachiness is simply not there.

Go see it. We need to reward anything that is as bright and colorful and optimistic as this is.

Beware of James Gunn irreverence...it's got his fingerprints all over it. As a huge fan of his Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy movies (and Peacemaker), that really worked for me. Even one massive change in lore...it's an eyebrow raiser, but I'll allow it because of what it's in service to...let's talk about that later.

Gonna try to catch it again.

Cause I’m a punk rocker yes I am.

Just a good old fashioned Boy Scout type representation. I liked it a lot.

The Pa Kent scenes were short but perfect.
Ending montage was sooo good.

I was having a hard time “seeing” Corneswet as Supes. But it didn’t take long to get it there.

Probably in for a second viewing in the theater with my kids for the first time since Spider-Man no way home.

If I went back in time and told teenager me that Nine Inch Nails would be doing soundtracks to Disney cartoons and Iggy Pop would be singing a song for the Superman movie, I'd have thought "wow, they've really gone soft."

I'd have to explain that yes, you tend to get more introspective and grounded as you get older, but also, the world has gotten much darker in mood since so it all kind of met in the middle, especially in America. Having traveled a bunch and worked with a bunch of people from around the world, I'd say the defining American trait is optimism (to the point of gullibility in a lot of cases). This country gets real weird when that's no longer the prevailing mindset.

I'm not hoping a comic book movie is going to change the zeitgeist, but I am hopeful this Superman can inspire some of the next generation who are seeing it as kids to be more optimistic and kind.

I totally agree with this part and am hopeful the same way .

But to be fair Iggy Pop did not record the the song for this movie specifically with thenTeddybears. Also what cartoon is NIN doing a soundtrack for?

Just got back from seeing the movie. If you look at my avatar, you know I'm a big Superman fan. All I'll say is that the 1978 Superman movie has nothing to worry about!

I saw it two days back, and really enjoyed it...The most "Superman" like Superman movie, and although the original movie has a better impact, given the modern audience and all that's changed now? This is easily in second place for me...It's a good moving film, paced well, doing a LOT of heavy lifting and carrying it all off rather well..

If I needed to gripe, the "family thing" is one...But that's the comic version (off and on) too, so it fits, and adds to the "homegrown goodness" of Clark too, which I can see making sense..Not impossible to move past for me, and much the same as Cavill's version too..And another perhaps is they are trying to do a LOT in the movie, and it might have been better to focus more on Superman and Lois and the small unit there? But given what they try, it works rather well..I don't have a complaint worth the mention really...

I'd say one thing about people complaining or comparing it to the 78 version, and that is that up to 78, there was really only ONE version of Superman to make for the film..Storywriting in the comics wasn't a monthly variation thing, and there was really only that one version to go for, so everyone who saw it said "that's MY Superman"....Modern audiences can't do that, since we ALL have a Superman we love, and they're all rather different, due to how DC has changed and added to the character each month....It's filled the role out, but also, makes us ALL think we KNOW Superman when it's just the version WE prefer...Making it harder to compare to other fans.......It's a really hard balance to throw into a movie character and make everyone happy.....We can see that clearly here...

I'm happy with the film, and enjoyed seeing it all worked out...I look forward to where they move on now too...It's fun..

Saw it last night. It took maybe 15-30 minutes to get fully onboard with where he was going. I was worried that Gunn couldn't put away his snarky, harsh (yet still endearing) humor but he proved that he could. It's full of humor, but there's no cynical snark. Luthor is properly evil, and I didn't even mind the kaiju! I need to see it again, but judging by how freakin' HAPPY I was walking out of the theater... 9/10.

A while back I said that Gunn needed to do ONE thing right with this movie, and that was capture the feeling this statue evokes:

I can't remember when the last time was that I bought a piece of Superman memorabilia... it was probably the 80s. But I bought that statue a while back because it just makes me happy looking at it. Gunn nailed it.

There is that ONE bit of controversy the people will be talking about... not sure yet what I feel, but at least it's a new idea.

This EXACTLY the movie the world desperately needs right now. But I'm a little afraid we're living in too cynical times to accept it.

It could easily have been a half hour longer too.
