Re: Sucker Punch

Movie Review: SUCKER PUNCH Is Thrilling, Smart… And Deeply Flawed | Badass Digest

"What Sucker Punch gets right it gets so right as to be brilliant. The action in the film is thrilling and next level, the design of the world is incredible and gorgeous and the themes explored are deep, dark and haunting. But what Sucker Punch gets wrong keeps it from being a truly great film; instead Sucker Punch is an incredibly flawed piece of ambitious art that dazzles and excites, but in the end fails.

But that failure is a noble one, and to see Zack Snyder stretch the way he does here, going for big ideas and aiming at big themes, is exhilarating. I’d rather have filmmakers fail like this every day of the week than succeed in the way most do, by being bland and safe and stupid. There are many critiques that can be lobbed at Sucker Punch, but stupidity simply isn’t a valid one."

Not looking so good...

I did enjoy 300 and Watchmen, despite being unhappy that he changed the ending from the book.

Me, personally...I like to have a plot that makes you think, not try to turn your brain off.
Favorite review so far...

"A movie that doesn't need an audience--just a box of tissues and some lotion. That anxiety you get is the dawning realization that the movie kind of wants to be by itself".

Re: Sucker Punch

Eye candy, no surprises, doesn't even make me want to watch it again. If you've seen the previews you have pretty much seen the movie.

:thumbsdown

Re: Sucker Punch

I just got back from it.
I went in not giving a crap about any story. I wanted Giant Samuri with gatling guns, dragons, WW2 bomber, Mechs, guns and hot chicks and it delivered.

Keep your expectations in check and it's a fun ride.

And at least it's not another remake/reboot.

Re: Sucker Punch

Snyder apparently cut the movie to pieces to get a pg-13. Think I'll wait for the inevitable director's cut, and spend my pennies on Source Code.

Indeed, people often complain about sequels and remakes, but when a original movie comes along they won't even give it a chance.

The director's cut is supposed to be 18 minutes longer.

Re: Sucker Punch

I don't think it's about not giving it a chance. If your fine with nothing more than eye candy...cool beans, go and see it...but if your looking for another win like 300...not so much.

Re: Sucker Punch

I've watched 3 different trailers and I still have no clue WTF it's about....
I always feel trailers that don't give away the plot and make you more curious are better than trailers which offer a 2 minutes condensed version of the entire film.

Re: Sucker Punch

I don't understand why people can't figure out the plot of the movie. Kurt Loder said "good luck telling anyone what this is about" when it's obviously "An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge" by way of the dealer's room at Comicon. I feel a movie review coming on, where I make everyone mad that they didn't get what was going on by pointing out the obvious straightforwardness of the narrative.

Re: Sucker Punch

Wait, there is a male out there that saw 300 and didn't like it. *blink*

Um...what?

I thought 300 was horrible. I've tried to get though it 4 times now, still haven't made it.

Of course, by time I saw it, I was already sick of every line being quoted and re-enacted by everyone around me for months, so I was disgusted with it before I ever layed eyes on it. Same with Step Brothers. The hype killed it for me.

Well, that only took an hour or so:

Re: Sucker Punch

I saw a Midnight showing. I'll agree with visually stunning and the trailers pretty much showed the entire movie in 3 minutes. I wanted more "fantasy world" less "real world". I might be tempted to see it in 3D..just for the visuals.

I thought Snyder might have been forced to cut the film for a PG-13. Babydoll's transition from "reall world" to "fantasy" looked a little stunted..like the censors said, "you can't show that, she's only 16". I'd be interested to see a director's cut.
