Stormtrooper pep build...Finished (now with pics)!!!

Just want to say hi,

and started my own stormtrooper pep helmet. Files courtesy of dung0beetle and Fierfek (thanks man, much appreciated). This is my first attempt at ANY pep stuff, so it's not perfect but hopefully that can be rectified at a later stage. I've purposefully left off the aerators as i'm going to use different ones at a later stage.

so far it's taken around 10 hours, but that's in short bursts inbetween work and the kids! hopefully get some resin work done next week after i've finished the ears and take it from there (this build might take some time!)!

As someone who is so frightened of PEPAKURA, that I preferred to scratch build this helmet, well done to you and I am watching with genuine interest and support!

frightened of pep? man, after what you managed with blue peter type materials you shouldn't be frightened of anything!!!

looking good so far mate, i'm on my first pep build too, also went for the stormtrooper ) i'm on day 11, just finished the final coat of filler and onto the spot putty stage.

fastglas resin hahaa that stuff stinks, i used it in my build along with the tissue matting (both from halfords)

do you plan on using Bondo (aka P38 in the UK)

i picked up a tub of filler called UPOL Quick Sand, same manufacturer as P38 yet slightly cheaper, i also think it goes on better, but it could be i'm just getting a little better applying it.

Cheers mate, yes the fastglass resin does stink!

I already have a tub of p38 in the garage so will probably stick with that for now...yours looks great so far! Will get the first lot of bonding on tomorrow!

roughly cut out the frown, and first part layer of rondo....which i'm rubbish at applying, no wonder i'm not allowed to plaster the walls in our house!!!

i hope you have a vapor mask? i see alot of that deadly dust! i was using 2 dust masks at the start of my build and while they stopped some dust they didnt stop the fumes, i was dangerously high most nights!

i borrowed my uncles 3M vapor mask and it seriously makes the difference, now i sit on my upturned bucket in my brothers garage for 10 hours straight ) no more exposure headaches or sore stomach's!

dont worry about being rubbish with the Bondo/P38, i was exactly the same at the start but now i feel i have got some skills and know how to use it best!

i have just applied probably the 6th coat of Bondo/P38 to the lid of my build, i think altogether i've sanded off about 1cm thick a coating.

with every coat/sand bumps and flaws reduce so expect about 5 full helmet sessions, plus all the small areas individually.

in your photos above i notice you have sanded down to the paper on areas, i did the same and i now think i was trying to refine the shape to early, tonight as i was skimming the lid again i did 2 full coats, 1 to thicken up the total layer of Bondo, roughly sanded so it had no snags, then on the next coat i filled the dents created from the previous coat, once dry another sand making sure i didnt break through to paper.

will help as i plan on making a silicone mold and casting.

cheers pal...I only started sanding because I ran out of p38 (I'd used more of it than i thought)! and got carried away with the sanding

thank goodness for dremmels though, they're great for edges and detailing!

if mine comes out anywhere near as nice as yours i'll be a happy chappy

well, this must be the slowest build ever! I'm only really managing to grab an hour here or there at the minute so can get on with it as much as i'd like

Anyway, i'm seriously not happy with the shape of the nose and cheeks and have been faffing about endlessly trying to correct it. I actually think it's more an issue of the original model (no offence to dung0beetle or fierfeck at all), as other pep builds i've seen with it suffer from the same problem.

On the other hand, the model by spacecowboy that terra1 is using in his (awesome) build is a more accurate shape.

Because of this I have been obsessing with the face and ignoring the rest of it....now I know it's nothing i've done wrong it's time to crack on! and take out some shares in milliput!

hey mate, looks not bad so far, the front on view looks a little strange but the others look promising.

from building up mine i feel its best to study and work on one area at a time.

i was attempting to do everything at once at the start and i wasn't getting where i wanted.

id say work on the shape of the frown, sand and shape as if the frown vent space wasnt there, work to get these to areas level and the shape will flow down.

id forget all about the eyes until later on, i hold my bucket on my lap and feel it symmetrically with both hands, eyes closed. you can start to feel where needs more of less, get a marker and mark higher areas for sanding, worked great i feel for me and i still use it for refining.

just as a guide i used 2.5 of the large shallow tins of P38, most of which i sanded off.

cheers, the front view is whats been bugging me about it...the is no real shape to che cheek area, and what little there was was more pronounced on one side than the other. Because of this i'v had to pile it up high in that area and attempt to take it back down to a better shape. Like I said in your thread, failing that i'm going to see if i can use that part of the pep from your model and implant it to mine. ( I also noticed a while ago that spacecowboys pep seems a LOT less wide than mine. I have to kind of turn the lid 45 degrees to get my head in it)

green: centre line, level upper and lower frown.

yellow: low point

red: high area, cheek bone.

blue: low area.

i think the form should curve around horizontally from the green centre line, scoop in a little at the yellow line and then bulge out over the red line, again scooping in to the blue line.

if you check my early posts at my first Bondo sand i had totally missed out the cheek bone shape, had to add it all in with the milliiput, i think you have put the bulge a little bit low.

had a session of grinding and sanding today and am happy that it's starting to get to the shape I had in mind. I've actually got down to the resin on the left cheek so will shap that one the best I can then take the other side from it.

ahh thats good to hear mate, its looking far more dynamic a shape and much closer than it was with those chubby cheeks it had yesterday.

i picked up some on that quick drying grey epoxy putty from poundstretchers, comes in the clear tubes.

man that stuff stinks! it sets nice and quick tho! it was really handy but it is horrible to work with. i also noticed it gets really hot when you kneed it, i guess its the chemical reaction, it made my hands a little itchy afterwards too!
