Stormtrooper pep build...Finished (now with pics)!!!

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

first off....got me some nice (and free!) gloves from work...they are ace for sanding with...

I was still unhappy with the shape of the left cheek, but i was now down to the resin....I then remebered I had some upol p40 left (great stuff, like a glass fibre bondo) so slapped a load on the inside of the left cheek enabling me to grind away at it and not go through,,,worked a treat!!! Now happy with the shape of the cheeks, so it's crack on with the bondo and sanding before I start refing the shape a little further!!

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

looking more like it now mate! hows it coming along? any areas giving you a hard time?

i've hit a slight slow spell in my build, yest and today i made some visible progress so i'l have an upload later.

No real problems at the minute apart from that putty around the eyes. It doesn't like a dremmel and drops off in chunks, but that maybe because I must not have kneaded it enough first...i'll put somemilliput over the top.

All I can say is a mouse sander and dremmel has saved me a lot of time!

I just want to get the dome bondod and sanded then I can start to refine it little by little and get that frown in.

I have noticed its starting to get quite heavy now too!

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

this indeed turning into a battle of attrition....had no real time at all to work on it, so decided to spray it with primer to give my eyes a rest (it wasn't doing them any good staring at something multicoloured!!)

waiting for a phonecall, so no powertools...trimmed the inside of the eyes off and filed a little off the underside of the eyes. I might get there...............in around a couple of years :(

as said earlier, I can now see how totally innaracurate it is going to be, but in all honesty I don't mind for a first attempt :)

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

mate i think its looking much better!

there comes a stage where progress appears to stop, this is how it was with my build as it looked the same day after day and i was getting down, yet with each visit it takes away another few flaws, don't lose heart because its looking great!

just think... after all this il have a stormtrooper bucket!) (at least one!) id almost forgotten this fact! my whole life i've dreamed of having one... an a few weeks i can have as many as i want :eek:P

i think i've come to appreciate the inaccuracies in my and other builds, to make one the exact same as another would be a little boring, each bucket having unique features makes the world a more interesting place.

keep sharing mate!

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

Hey, Mate! I have been keenly following this thread and I think you are doing a FANTASTIC job! I think its fair to say that, at the end of the day, you can only be as accurate as the base on which you build. This PEPAKURA file is a great start but recently, more accurate ones have become available. I am in no way disrespecting the incredible work that is accomplished by the PEPAKURA designers on here. They achieve things that I dare not even TRY to understand lol!

The tenacity, determination and willingness to listen to the awesome advice, that other members have offered you, tells a lot about the person you are. It's never easy to put hours into on aspect of a build, to then hear that it could be better. You not only do that, but you then take it on board, in the spirit it is meant, and change it accordingly. If there is one build I really want to see succeed, then this is it! And, you know what? I believe it will!

Utmost respect to you
Darren.

By the way, I still can't even glue the bits together without gluing myself to it! :lol
So I am going to stick to scratch building.

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

Totally humbled.....

It's all down to you guys that I am still going ahead with it, because at one stage I nearly gave up. I know it's not the best, and if i'm offered solid advise and guidance by some very talented people on here...there is no way i'm going to ignore it!

thanks to you guys, it WILL get finished, and it WILL get the tlc it deserves whilst doing so......much respect.

Paul

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

I see nothing wrong with it, some of the buckets in the movie are very sloppy put together and some are crushed and disproportionate. So really, what is screen accurate? I seen the ANH vader helmet in person and the ones people create are way better than the original. A movie Camera hides a lot, the first keaton Bat suit even new was very crude looking in person.

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

Its looking good. I too am attempting my first build. I am building a Red Hood helmet. This looks a lot more difficult and you seem to be doing very well.

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

Just a quick 1.5hr sessions today (gotta grab it while I can!)...waiting for milliput supplies to arrive, so cut the frown out a little as it was a bit too narrow...looking much better now. Also had to cut one of the eye surrounds out yesterday as I had used the cheapo putty from poundstretcher and it hadn't set properly so replaced with milliput. All better now.

Also tidied edges around the mic tip housings a little..

Then got bored and sprayed it black!

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

Hi Hooper and Terra1, I'm now following both your builds with interest.
I got my first milliput or order today to try on mine.
I'm glad to hear that hooper tried P40 and it worked well, as I plan to re enforce some areas on mine with it.
Did you put pure resin over your pepakuru shape, ie brush it on to form the initial hard shape?
In your build hooper, I noticed that you put the helmet traps and tears and ears on right at the start and bonded over, whereas terra1 added them after.
I wonder which method works out best long term.
Good luck, good build.

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

I agree with Cal about his movie accurate statement.
The originals are not symmetrical and wonky, the ear gaps were awful, and the domes were bumpy rather than smooth, also the eye cut outs were rushed with plastic showing. They were fine for the background movie.
The people that troop in them or have a replica at home are under much more close up scrutiny, hence i think movie accurate isn't good enough for me.
I've spent ages on my vertical lines for the vocoder mouthpiece with deep straight grooves to replicate a metal looking piece.
I also plan to use the insides from a real crash helmet to finish it off and make it comfy and look like a real helmet inside and out. There's plenty of 99p old crash helmets to be found.

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

hi mate, the pep model I used had the indents and tears already included, whereas terra1's didn't. To be honest it would be easier to add them later as you cover them in bondo then try and and dig them out again (well on my build anyway).

the p40 works great, easy to apply and sets rock hard in no time, but it really stinks so make sure you are wearing a mask and/or are in a well ventilated area.

as for the resin...it was just brushed over the outside of the raw pep model (although i had to brace it a little inside just to make sure it kept the overall shape), then resin again on the inside with fibreglass mat.

one thing i have learnt mate is that it's not a race, so take your time...

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

haha, shadow trooper...not at the minute, but that may change depending on what mood i'm in :) most of the black has been sanded off now anyhow!

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

REALLY nice work Hooper. I am really digging these pep builds. Truthfully, I have to say that I agree with some of the sentiments about screen accuracy--although, it is nice to see that special attention to detail. The craftsmanship in this community is REALLY inspiring and I think striving for quality is never a bad thing.

In any case, great build man... I actually like the black paint.

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

nice looking build, is it being converted into a shadow storm trooper helmet :ninja (thats my shadow trooper emote)

also, yours doesn't look like a cake which is a bonus :)

Re: My very first stormtrooper pep build....

Hey hooper, I gotta say you're doing a fine job with the helmet. I know the file wasn't as accurate a base as many would hope, but its taking shape quite nicely under your fingers. I have a new TK helmet file I'm working on, this file is based on the ANH hero. So, keep an eye out for it soon.

lol...cheers pal. A shadow trooper does sound apppealing, but i'm not sure yet :confused
