Stormtrooper pauldrons

Is there a specific ranking order for the various coloured trooper pauldrons?

I always thought only Sandtroopers wore pauldrons, but I've seen quite a few 'death star' type trooper costumers wearing them at conventions etc.

The same with leather ammo pouches - are they exclusively a 'dirty-trooper' thing?

This is a touchy subject for those hardcore dirty boys who love that sand :p .

I can't remember all the ins and outs but the 501st approved the wearing of pauldrons for non sandtroopers based on some comic book stuff or expanded universe stuff (anyone who knows better please jump in) and it doesn't sit well with many Sandtroopers.

There is a post a bout it at www.sandtrooper.net http://www.mepd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1345 which is pretty civil and shows various viewpoints.

I personally don't like to see clean troopers with the pauldrons and ammo pouches. I'll be diplomatic and say it's just not my cup of tea. If you check out the time and effort some of the sandies put in to their gear to look screen accurate over at www.sandtrooper.net you would maybe see the viewpoint of some others who don't agree with it.

As for specific rank for the sandtroopers anyway Orange pauldron is officer grade Captain, Lieutenant or Second Lieutenant or squad leader depending on what reference you read. White is sergeant and Black is normal trooper. Grey is Corporal/Specialist.

One thing I think looks cool that is normally associated with sandtroopers which looks cool on TKs is carrying the MG34 like the one carried in the death star.

Anyway each to their own when it comes to costuming.

Cheers Chris.

Only sandtroopers aka TD's carry MP-40 ammo pouches a real one runs you anywhere from 50 to 70 bucks if your lucky enough to find one. Sith armor and TK510 sells 4 colors of paildrons blood red orange black white and grey
I have seen a few TK's whereing them, sitharmor also has an ok replica ammo pouche

As VIC has said it's really up to you I think it looks cool to have a pauldron on a clean tk.... but then again i was thinking of throwing a leg hoster on my TK but i have yet to do so, i want to keep it accurate the only other opion for me is to buy and other Armor and get to work on a TD later down the road when bills are less pleantiful :(

Wow, I didn't realise it was such a sensitive issue.

Thanks for the responses guys, all things considered I guess I'll hold off on buying a pauldron for my new TK outfit...

Still think they look cool, though.

It's really up to you, After my frist trooping expreice today in the 501st i honestly couldnt care who wears what.
If it makes kids happy or someone day better then i dont care. The gestest feeling i have had in a long time is when a little boy ran up and huged my leg plate, i couldnt understand what he was saying because he seemed a bit special but i could tell he was happy i put my arm around him hey then i think he said YEAH. and his mother took are picture. Never in my life did i feel greater like i was 10 feet tall i'm glad i had a helmet on so no one could see a small tear in my eye.

My girlfriend asked if i got a picture i told her no and i dont need it it's in my memoire.

I wont be changing my TK because i have been bitten by the accuratcey bug.
But if it makes you happy who are we to judge :thumbsup

Like everyone has said, it's up to you. The way I see it, the Troopers are a military unit. The equipment/armor must be new when first issued.

And when your not in the sand, surely the Troopers are expected to apply a little spit an polish as all military units do so, though ANH only shows them dirty, there HAD to be clean ones at some point. :D

well said gundam :thumbsup

but about the gray pauldrons, i was under the impression that there weren't any in ANH. some white pauldrons, to my understanding, were actually mistaken to be gray. i'm not a TD enthusiast, so i could be wrong, just voicing what i've heard :)

IÂ’m still looking for someone to make a better one.

I remember seeing a black and white production still of a Sandtrooper. It was taken from the rear with the actors helmet off. The Black part of the pauldron was very raised between the sticching. As if hard foam rectangles had been inserted under the leather.

The greay pauldrons came from the Special Editions.

Clean TKs that wear a pauldron are refered to as "pauldron slappers", since they just slap that pauldron on and they think they're a sandtrooper.

I have no problem with clean/white sandtroopers with pauldrons. The problem is that there are a big number of differences between regular armor, and sandtrooper armor, including lack of chest buttons, different chest piece, no drop boxes, different lenses, no helmet stripes, different knee plate, etc.

It is not just the pauldron (or anyone particular thing) that makes a sandtrooper, but a long list of modifications to the armor.

Not that i am bashing anyone maybe most people that get the pauldrons on there clean TK dont really know the diffrentces bettween the TD and TK, It's more or less a style thing that i only really see with people who have FX suits. I havent yet seen someone in a accurate TK doing that yet but i am sure there is someone out there.

I'm working on it, should have a proto ready to show off by the year's end. I'm trying my best to make it as screen-accurate as possible & have it made out of quality materials.
As an aside, grey came from Kenner, they looked at a B&W photo of a white pauldron and thought it was grey, and made a toy off of it. So, if you want to look like a toy wear grey. ;)

As I am the one in the 501st who proved the clean TK with pauldrons, here's the EU proof I dug up for the LMO:

On Page 10 of Star Wars Panel to Panel (Published by Dark Horse Books and Lucas Books), 4 clean TKs (not Sandys - note no packs or BFGs and standard TK kneeplates) to the right of Luke clearly wearing pauldrons on the cover of the Dark Horse 1994 re-printed Marvel Comics movie adaptations.

Page 98 of the same book and the cover of Dave Dorman's Dark Horse "Dark Forces: Jedi Knight" (1998) - 3 TKs (buttons on Ab Plates and drop boxes, and no BFG - looks like a standard issue E-11 to me) with pauldrons.

If you're a 501st member, here's the whole thread in all of it's re-hashed glory: http://www.501stforums.com/forum/viewtopic...auldron&start=0

Seems this dead horse won't stay down, eh Seth?

You are so right on that one. :) I'm desperately trying to make this look a reality for me.

BTW, looking at that thread, what's up with the waist of the trooper on the far left? Has his belt fallen revealing clean armor underneath or is that a canvas belt above the plastic one?

:lol You said it. I am in the do whatever you want camp. In the draft costume guidelines it lists a stormtrooper with pauldron as a "Heavy Weapons Trooper" & it shares the TD designation with Sandtroopers (which are described as dirty). I don't have a prob with it (since it's in a bunch of video games & comics), but some people want to get real bent out of shape about it.
