Steampunk Corset project WIP (Lotsa pics)

Here's a little progress on my latest project. A steampunk ladies costume for a photoshoot I'm doing. Though I would chronicle the process a bit here as some of you might be interested in what takes place behind that scenes. What a Cutter/Draper does. etc, etc, etc.

A photographer friend called me up last week and asked for my help in putting together a steampunk photoshoot for a new model he's trying to help out by building a portfolio for her. Initially I told him I would see what I could borrow or pull from costume storage at work.

The following day I was walking around the shop bored. All our shows are open and on the road and I had nothing to do so i started digging through fabric storage and ran across this greyish white fabric with a map printed on it (will take a pic and upload it tomorrow). The fabric somehow inspired me and the creative process just kind of exploded forth from this bolt of fabric. I hated the color, but I loved the print. So I dyed it to achieve a more parchment color (though it went a little darker).

Next I pulled up the dress form and started plotting out what my corset would look like.

And Started draping the fabric.

Started cutting and planning. Decided I needed zippers instead of a busk. Thought it would add something a little extra to the look, and I had seen a girl at Anachrocon with double zippers in hers (thanks Megan Maude), and I loved it.

Also testing the look of the binding fabric. Started experimenting and swatching different colors that appeared in the map print. Grey ended up being the key and I found a nice stripe cotton print (that will eventually be pants for me!).

Test fitting the look. Decided to take the striped print down to the bustle skirt and pinned a scrap onto the bottom to see what it would look like. The designer for our last show bought a ton of trim that she didn't use and I liberated it to go on the bottom of this.

Happy with the look, its time to finish it all off. First I layed it out and started prepping my boning.

Fast forward to the near end. I decided to change the direction of the stripes on the front apron. They still go vertical in the back. I need to click a few more pics of this. At least to show off the back of the bustle. Shoes and accessories to come.

Thought I'd add in a pic of the back.

Did a little update. Hopefully I will get my shoe supplies in tomorrow and I can chronicle that event. I see a lot of questions on here about changing shoe colors so i think it will be informative at least.

Yea, a dress form will change your whole world as a costumer. :) A very worthy expense.

Great job, Chris! Can't wait till we go to Masco.

Forgot to mention. Went to lunch at a place next to Masco, so I poked my head in. Its lamesauce. Nothing really worth going in there for, The person that suggested it didn't really know what he was talking about. Mostly headliner fabrics, overpriced leathers, and nailheads.

Well shucks!

More updates. Photoshoot coming up on the 23rd. Can't stop tweaking. Added a hat and jacket. People kept saying how pirate-esque she looked, so I went with that and made a mini-tricorn and did some pirate cuffs on the jacket.

Wanted to show off some work on the shoes too. I've seen many people throughout the years post questions on recoloring shoes so I thought this would be a good one to post a mini-tutorial on.

Here's what I started out with. something I found in a moldy storage bin and cleaned up. They had been painted brown before as you can tell by the blotchy appearance.

First thing I did was grab a rag and some acetone and go to town cleaning off the mold and breaking down the surface. Trying to get some of the old paint off. This is a key step here. You want to break down anything that's on the surface of your shoe. Even if it's just the existing polish or sealer. Be careful when working with vinyl shoes as sometimes the acetone will eat them. Denatured alcohol, and even a high percentage rubbing alcohol will work as well and are safer for use on vinyl.

Purchased my paint here: Angelus Paints

Best prices I've found and they have all the colors available in 1oz. which is perfect for a small project.

Angelus is my preferred leather and shoe paint. Very easy to use. Fume free as it's an acrylic. And it doesn't crack as bad as most other paints I've used. You can even apply it with a brush while watching TV (you CAN put it on with a sprayer if you prefer). The trick is to go in light layers. Otherwise you'll see the brush strokes in the finished product.

Here you see I've started layering in. First layer you can still see through the paint. This is normal. As you build up, it will go away. You don't want to rush it. The lighter the paint and the darker the undercolor of the boot, the more layers it will take.

I decided to go witha two-tone, pulling colors from the costume. And after about 5 layers of yellow and 3 layers of grey, I finished it off with some neutral show polish and some fun lacing. You MUST finish this with something to seal it. The company sells a acrylic finisher to seal the paint job with, but I find that it yellows really fast and ruins your paint. The neutral shoe polish seals it with wax and you can polish it like a normal shoes and get a nice finish.

Enjoy! Hope the tut is helpful!
