Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/WIP - Con pics on last page

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Updated Pics 12.23/26.12 Bottom of pg. 2 and pg.

They come out sideways on my phone and I don't know how to right them when I post them. LOL...

Usually in the photo gallery viewer on your phone there are rotate functions. Then again, I'm an Android user - if you have an iPhone I don't know if there are such options or not.

move them to photo bucket, rotate with tools.

So I was messing around with Ericqueen's Bane mask template to attach it to my respirator, just to see what it looked like and didn't care for it much. I built another complete mask just to entertain myself (using the second template) and modded it a bit. It is still rough but it is getting there.

Then while following the AWESOME Guyver build of Durkness, he showed how he created the hammered metal look of his foam with a woodburning tool (funny enough, I got one on New Years day for 40% off).

And following that technique, the pictures included are the result. Big thanks to Durkness and the inspiration he provided.

And all pics are right side up now...lol.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Pics pgs. 2,3 and 4 (Updated 1/4/13)

noice!!!!!

Thanks man.

I have to lower the nose/eyes area but otherwise it is coming together pretty well. I am kinda playing it by ear so I don't really know what I am going to do until I do it. Got to love side projects...

If this one goes well, I am going to revamp the respirator for the missus since she is making a steampunk costume to go with mine.

And did I mention I will be etching and gold leafing (hopefully) the armor as well?

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Pics pgs. 2,3 and 4 (Updated 1/4/13)

Update: I finished some of the primary detail work of the breastplate and kidney plate, got it all sealed with this awesome liquid rubber that give a nice texture and good flexibility.

I did the kidney plate first, just to see how it would turn out and give me a good idea of the "hammered" texture I was working towards. I will probably paint the other plates tonight after work, I will post pics then or in the morning.

Weathering on the kidney plate will begin soon after I watch some tuts to get it right the first time.

Mask progress is slow. Some ideas are coming here and there but the overall design is still in flux. I will just work on everything else and wrap everything up with the mask.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Armor sealed/Kidney Plate painted (Updated 1/8/1

Caharin - is the kidney plate pic reversed? The higher "flap" goes on the right side of your back.

The only other thing I can say is that hammer marks in metal are dents that typically have no distinct rim - they're parabolic, really - so you may want to go over your foam and smooth or smash down the rims of your 'hammer dents'. It'll make it look a little less like a printed pattern from a distance, too.

Good stuff so far!!

Excellent points Primo. I get far too little feedback on this build sometimes. But I would rather too little than too much.

Dammit...I didn't think about the kidney plate being backwards. I will make another and fix that.

The sanding part may be an issue. Everytime I sand foam, I end up with the little burrs on it and it looks horrible. What grade paper do you think I should use? I could mess around with some different ones on the new "practice" kidney plate.

Edit: Also, what do you think I should connect the segmented plates with? They have to overlap each other to look right. I was thinking zip ties or some leatherworking rivets but the plates are pretty thick unless I shave them down.

Oh, sanding the thick EVA is something I just had to start worrying about with my Bane build as well - what I did was a combination of hand-sanding with medium-grit paper (100-150 I think) and dremel sanding with a sanding drum or grinding stone drum bit - just light passes rapidly over the surface to try to get rid of burrs and pits.

If you need to get rid of a lot of burrs quickly you can just take scissors to the edge, and/or you can sometimes even fill and level an edge with hot glue, scraping the excess away with a hot knife.

Makes sense. I will try that and see what happens. and funny enough, I edited my last post while you were replying to it. I was asking what you thought I should connect the breastplates with. Lol..

If they just need to be connected to each other you could use copious amounts of hot glue, but if you want to get a little fancier *and* provide for some expansion and contraction, you could use something like rivets (or even nuts and bolts) to attach the ends of short lengths of webbed strapping, "hanging" each plate from the one above it. The hardware detail would work nicely with the look.

As for the plating itself, I don't know how visually similar to the original you want to stay, but Bane's battle belt pulls his midsection inward a bit, such that the armored vest portion is wider than his waist from just about every angle. I say all that to say this: you might not need quite so many plates. Matter of fact, too many might cover your whole front and look like catcher's gear.

Thanks for the props..... glad it helped. Doesn't look like foam after you got your stuff painted.... Makes me want to make some steampunk armor now...lol.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Armor sealed/Kidney Plate painted (Updated 1/8/1

A few updates today:

Painted the armor plates...they look okay. Hopefully good weathering will bring it around. My new kidney plate (facing the right direction) was cut and textured, just need dremel and paint.

I completed most of the assembly on the mask, sealed it and got the copper base coat on. I have to go through it and clean it up. The respirator design changed because of including the rest of mask. The first design was really nice, just using the repirator (by itself) but it had to be scaled back and simplified because when added to the rest of the mask; the original stuff was very bulky, weighed the front down and made whole thing look very horse faced.

Also got my gauntlet in the mail. Good fit but the top finger strap is a lil tight.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Gauntlet Received/Mask painted (Updated 1/13/13)

The mask looks amazing.... great job on it. :thumbsup

Thanks Durkness. Got the hammered technique from you and I think for the most part, it is working out pretty good.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Gauntlet Received/Mask painted (Updated 1/13/13)

Yeah if you're going to do the whole mask instead of just the faceplate and a hat, what you've done there looks really nice. I especially love the vent boxes on the rear sides. Get some contrasting colors on all the parts to bring them out, man - I can't wait to see how it looks finished! Oh, and that gauntlet is boss.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Gauntlet Received/Mask painted (Updated 1/13/13)

Great work! Can't wait to see all of this come together. Are you planning on going to a Con, or is this just something to scare kiddies after dark? :p

Thanks Seth. I appreciate the kind words. You and Primo helped me out quite a bit along the way. The first con of the season is in about a month. I HOPE to finish up in the next couple weeks. I hate when things come down to the wire, corners are cut and some compromises are made.

Also small update: I did a little hand painting to the mask while I was waiting for the new kidney plate to finish drying. I am still messing around with the colors to get it to pop, so it may be different in the end. The pictures make the antique gold look very yellow (looks like mustard to me.) It is darker, trust me.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Mask 80% DONE (Updated 1/13/13)

Looks pretty good - I understand that antique gold can be a pain to photograph - I used about the same color on a couple parts of my Portal gun. Also don't underestimate the power of a contrasting 'drybrush' pass to get all the texture to show up on a part. Like, use a lighter color lightly drybrushed over the bendy sections of pipe to make the accordion bends visually stand out, and of course the old technique of drybrushing silver on edges to make it look like they're worn or chipped.

WoW!!! Looking good my man, can't wait to see it live!
