Static 1:1 R2 unit thinking of stating one?

Well, I'm thinking about building up a static R2 unit. Wondering whats out there, kit or partial kit wise, that won't break the bank, that looks good, and won't take 10 years to build. FG is ok, but so is just about any other material.

Thoughts?

Cheapest and likely fastest way is to build a plastic R2 with resin detail pieces. No waiting for runs, what isn't available can be made using available plans fairly easy. I plan on making an all plastic one after I finish my alum R2.

Here is a pic of mine -- he's a lot further along now though. Currently working on the dome electronics.

I don't mean to derail your thread, but that is just..well..beautifull!

Thanks guys!

Sorry for the thread derail. I just posted the pic 'cause I usually get a request to post one after I mention it.

TMP, you offer a kit? Please PM me with details when you get a chance.

Doug, I have to know how you are intending to finish that, will you paint him or leave it Alloy? looks just incredible in the Alluminium.

TMP can you also shoot me a PM about it too when you have time.

There used to be a kit avaible for somewhere around $500 featuring less expensive resin/plastic parts. I remember to cut costs, people used to use styrene for the body panels on top of one of those cardboard concrete tubes. While not as deluxe as the aluminum versions, those still looked great IMO. Not something you could put RC in, but decent for a immobile display piece.

I realize that's REAL low-end, but if someone could put together something under a grand, I'm pretty sure it would be a big seller and I'm pretty sure it could be done because it was in the past.

LFL is very adamant about there NOT being any kind of kit available to just buy. And has shut down such endeavors.

The R2Builders group lives in those good graces of LFL, with the understanding that parts runs are okay, but an entire "kit" is verbotten.

Let's keep it that way. Please.

I would love to hear more about that kit that was around $500. If anyone has info please pm me as I have been in the same boat. Thanks for starting this thread!!

I have one of those kits, only mine has an aluminum dome that is already etched and painted. I'd like to sell it if it could be picked up.

Seriously, start at www.astromech.net.

Join the forums, live in the file archives, ask lots of questions and go here for some inexpensive resin alternative pieces:

www.resinparts.com

Another good site is: www.astromechfactory.com

If you want a static statue with lights and sound and maybe dome rotation, you should be able to do it on the cheap and still make it look really good.

Mine is not quite as far along as the other droid shown in this thread, but he's getting there - almost ready to stand:

True.

Even if there was no "kit", but rather a few people who were catering to the low-end builders, it would be great. I know that you can still get some really nice resin pieces, most of the parts runs seem focused on higher-end, aluminum/metal pieces. I've already got one of the older aluminum domes, but I only check the builder's group forum sporadically these days and I'm thinking about getting back to building an R2 now that my kids are old enough not to require constant supervision to keep them from destroying things. :LOL

One of my real grail items. I had planned to build a static fiberglass/resin version myself. I had all the parts Unfortunately had to sell him during this darn extended unemployment time but it is the one thing I plan to start buying parts for again as soon as I start work. This time I am going to make an all metal one, but still static.:thumbsup

Yes there is ;):thumbsup

:rolleyes

So you have a kit huh? Care to share the specifics? You can pm me if you want.

I know of a few "kits" that are out there on ebay from time to time. But they require a TON of cleanup. Sometimes with limited time...years of cleanup. I would avoid those. Lots of cheap alternatives....just check out astromech and good luck!
