Stargate Jaffa Build - Complete!

So I've been working on this one for a while, but I haven't bothered to put up a thread yet. I'm hoping that by doing so I will spur myself into being a little more proactive considering my completion date is now a month away! I have always loved Stargate, and (this may sound a little sacrilegious) to be honest it's probably my favourite 'Star' universe, even managing to pip Star Trek and Star Wars. So when I found out that Amanda Frakkin' Tapping was coming to a Con here in my home town I thought to myself, "I have to put out all the stops! I need a costume that is JUST for meeting her", whereas up to date all of my costumes have just been things I feel like doing, not for meeting a specific genre or subject. To that end, and given my penchant for armour work, I decided on a set of Jaffa armour, especially as I've always wanted one.

The armour will be made of EVA foam and covered with Worbla and then probably automotive puttied and painted up. Still working out exactly how I want to do all the intricate designs on it.

Pics of progress to come soon.

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Good luck with the build. I made a jaffa last year for our local con and got to meet Ben Browder while wearing it, so I know exactly how you feel, it was lots of fun. Can't wait to see some pics!

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

So as promised, pics are here. I wanted to get a few of my latest work so that people could see where I'm up to.

First up was half of the staff weapon. I have finished this up to approximately 95%, however I have now decided that it is too big scale wise and I have decided to try and remake it smaller.

This is the first few pieces of the shoulder/collar armour. Just the foam base pieces.

Base design of the 'belt buckle' finished.

The base armour for the shins with main design added.

The 'buckle' now covered with Worbla and just about ready for priming and painting.

The shoulder armour now attached together and covered in Worbla. A few more details needed before it is primed, and I'm still working on how I'm going to add the intricate designs to the paint work. Current thought process is that I will use my mini dremel to carve shallow designs into the build up primer I'm using, paint with the base colour, then use gold/silver pens to trace the designs.

Coming along nicely, I'm a big Stargate fan love your work :thumbsup

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Can't wait to see more! I've wanted to do one for a while now!

Love the series so much (the original SG1)

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the support :). I'm hoping to have a lot more to show you in coming weeks. This should help with my motivation issues lately :p.

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Subscribed :). Is that Jaffa staff PVC pipe covered with a foam exterior for the detailing? Are you freehanding this or using a pep file for reference?

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

FANGS: Thanks, I'm honoured :D!
Artemis: Yup, sure is. It's PVC piping, with 6mm foam for the main parts (the same thickness as the armour pieces), unfortunately after having finished most of it and looked at it, I've decided it's way too thick! I think I need to go down once diameter sizing in the pipe, and I'll use 2-3mm foam to cover it instead, i think this will give it a much more authentic size. I'm planning on using two seperate halves of pipe, attached in the middle using a screw in system for stability, and have the wires for the LEDs (that I plan on installing in the head) running down the length of the pipe to the battery that I'm planning on housing in the bottom 'scoop' portion of the staff.

As for the pattern, I managed to find a really low res, only partially accurate game model of a staff weapon that I broke down and created a foam pep pattern from to give me a bit of a template to work with. So it gives me a start and then I build from there :) My main issue so far (and the reason the old staff is only '95% complete') is trying to get the top portions of the staff right. It's bloody difficult without a proper pattern to follow lol.

Anyway, here is today's meagre contribution. Only had a couple of hours before work so I covered one of the 'plate' pieces with Worbla.

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Another update. So I haven't had any MAJOR progress on the armour pieces thus far, although I have covered the second piece of 'Plate' armour in Worbla and have begun work on the hand cover pieces. Basic shape is done and now I'm adding the detailing.

I did however spend my day off running around picking up 'bits and bobs' for the costume, including new diameter piping and connectors for my Mk II Staff Weapon and webbing strap and connectors for attaching the plate armour together over my shoulders. I also managed to find a metallic mesh material which I believe, if double layered over black material (possibly interfacing), should give a fairly good impression of chainmaille for the under clothing. Oh and I bought a buttload of cheap 3mm craft foam on special :p. If you've wondered why I use bright green foam for my detailing? It's because it's the cheapest colour :p.

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Newest work update. The base of the gauntlets are finished up now. Need to drill holes down the sides to allow for the leather straps to lace them up. I'm thinking that the easiest way to do all the intricate detailing will be after the spray putty stage, and to just dremel it in as I plan on doing for the details on many of the other parts. Still have some time to think about it though.

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Haven't had much time to work on this lately as we have just purchased a house and moved last Friday, so things have all been packed up, but hoping to start working on my Mk II Staff Weapon tonight :D. Hopefully will have some progress pics to upload tomorrow!

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Soooo...It took a little longer than I had hoped to have some new pics to post because I spent about 10hrs of making time doing nothing but making mistakes while attempting to make up some of the large pieces for the staff weapon, however I think I have now got some of the kinks ironed out!! I've managed to make up most of the base of the top 'leaf' pieces of the staff, which was the part giving me the most grief. I've also made up the top 'handle' piece and almost finished up the larger bottom 'handle' piece'.

1255496_615973198483310_1365944279_n.jpg

I've picked up a can of the silver that I think will probably give me the closest match to the screen used paint, but that's still to be seen.

10007413_615973218483308_84762415_n.jpg

Also covered the shins with Worbla today. Only thing left now is to add the detail to the top 'knee cap' section, and heat form them around my legs.

1070075_616375991776364_1075948943_n.jpg

I've also started primer/puttying the gauntlets and hand cover pieces, hope to give the silver a shot on the hand covers very soon!

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Managed to get the hand covers painted today to try out the paint colour and I think it's a pretty damn good match! First pic shows it in natural light as well as shade, and the second pic shows it completely in shade with camera flash. It seems to be almost the perfect 'dark silver' that hopefully I can accent with a light silver pen for the details on other pieces.

Also, staff progress!!

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Looks great! The new staff weapon looks to be coming along nicely too. :) Looking forward to seeing the finished pieces!

Re: Stargate Jaffa Build

Thanks HothGirl, I appreciate it :D. I have a week and a half to make this all happen :S Getting down to the wire now!

Only slight progress on some staff pieces today and I didn't take any photos because it wasn't much. Need to really get into priming and painting the other pieces!
