Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pre-release)

When I was a kid, I imagined that Stars Wars was actually Artoo and Threepio's story, and my idea for prequels and sequels was their adventures with different owners. I still think it's a better premise than all this convoluted jedi family saviour prophesy nonsense that modern SW fans worship like the gospel.
That was the premise of the short lived animated show 'Droids' -

Thats the way the Lucas SW6 played out,....he had influence from 'The Hidden Fortress' directed by Akira Kurosawa, in which the story is told from the perspective of two peasants, after squarrelling & splitting up they end up getting captured, reunite & get caught up in the story.

R2 & 3PO are the constant throughout Lucas's Star Wars films, R2 continuously steps in to save our heroes or undergoes secret missions

The new Disney films either don't understand this, or have purposefully decided to change this perspective
There are many who feel that Han, Leia & Luke's characters have been mis-handled, but poor R2 has been left out of this trilogy

Its very strange that theres a build your own R2 or BB8 at Galaxy's Edge

For all intents and purposes, it really should have been R2 who went with Poe to retrieve the map segment. Think about it: hero of the Rebellion, and served faithfully side by side both Leia and Luke, and their parents. R2 was the logical choice for the mission. Instead the writers decided to give him depression.

That’s actually very true, haven’t even thought of it.
Is it explained anywhere why he suddenly comes back to life in the end or that’s just coincidence again?

Jeez, so many post of arguing back and forth. You people do realize it’s just a movie right ? A MOVIE for crying out loud. You will always have issues and continuity problems when there was no 9 film plan to begin with. ‘77 Star Wars was meant to be and still is ONE film , rest are all spin offs trying to create a story that was never there in the beginning. ‘77 Star Wars never said “a new hope” or “episode lV” at the beginning until weeks before ESB was released. I remember I was there in 77 to remember all that. So all the fighting on here about any of the PT and ST is pointless because they weren’t even thought of in 77. Lucas never had any intention or story line to make 6 or 9 films, just the 1. Even the book in 76 says “Star Wars - from the adventures of Luke Skywalker “ marvel was the one to take the story beyond SW77 then fox said we need a sequel and then began all the “try to make a story” please peeps stop bickering over a movie.

I felt it was implied that he was set to "return to life" when the last piece of the map was retrieved.

Spacers coming and going from both Takodana and Mos Espa. And little Ani needs some toys.

Again, your reaching to justify still doesn’t explain it. Did you play with toy likenesses of transient passers through your town when you were a kid? Before you go and say “absolutely”, I’ll answer for you and say of course not. It’s just silly and unneeded dot-connecting to try and make some cohesion out of this jumble of movies.

No I never did. But then again I never was 9 year old slave, either......

Fascinating.

“The story that we’re telling, the story that we started to conceive when we did ‘The Force Awakens’ was allowed to continue,” Abrams said. “Episode VIII didn’t really derail anything that we were thinking about.” - JJ Abrams

Heard TROS is 3 hours and 19 minutes long...
Are you being facetious, or is there some preliminary word on runtime?

Is it explained anywhere why he suddenly comes back to life in the end or that’s just coincidence again?

“BB-8 comes up and says something to him, which is basically, ‘I’ve got this piece of a map, do you happen to have the rest?’” Abrams said. “The idea was, R2 who has been all over the galaxy, is still in his coma, but he hears this. And it triggers something that would ultimately wake him up.”

I remember reading years ago about a concept where the droids were active participants in the 9 to 12 part saga and the finale was 3PO telling the entire story to an unseen audience.

I always kind of liked that idea as a cap to the whole thing.

When you're just making it up as you go it's hard to derail, I don't believe for a minute this trilogy had an actual story planned out from the beginning. It's basically been "chuck it against the wall and see what sticks".

I thought it was R2 telling it to a Whill?

"With Star Wars, I had one piece of information of where it was all going, and that’s where it has been in my head for a long time, and things were building towards that.” - Adam Driver

Plus we know Palpatine was in the works since 2013.

Actually Mark Hamill recalls being in Tunisia filming. And George asking if he'd like to be the episode 9. Mark said at that time George was tossing around the idea of 12 films.
