Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pre-release)

No, same metric..
Do they tell a cohesive story, start to finish?
Do the individual films (largely) work on their own?
Do they follow the same elemental formulas established by George in the OT?

The answer is obvious.

While the prequels CERTAINLY have flaws (as I've stated, I'd have gone a completely different direction or just not done them at all) they check all three boxes. Even AOTC which is definitely the weakest, is FAR from being an outright terrible SW film.

The sequel trilogy has already failed on all three.

The Last Jedi was so incorrect on EVERY LEVEL that it not only breaks this trilogy but it breaks the franchise, it's not conducive to a cohesive story and it doesn't work as an individual film, either.. TFA, Largely DOES work as an Individual film but mainly because it's (almost) a remake of ANH.
TFA SEEMS to use most of the elemental formulas established by George (although neutered by Disney) but TLJ completely abandoned them. We have yet to see if TRS does any of these three.
Amen. In reality there has to be another film after TRS for the ST to actually qualify as a trilogy.

I think....I actually like the new trooper helmet. I dig how it's more angular than the TFA and TLJ helmets were. Feels like a more realistic upgrade from the OT helmets than the ST ones.

This just made me laugh cuz I imagined someone seeing a publicity photo of the imperial guards before ROTJ came out and getting all worked up thinking it’ll be some EeEePiC aWSoMe LazORfIgHt guys only to find that they were mere room decorations...

Interesting... it’s funny how today they think the lightsabers should be light weight

When back in the 70s Lucas first idea was to have the lightsabers so full of energy they were heavy and needed 2 hands to control them

I’m curious as to what physically changed on the construction

Did they ditch the poly blades?

It's just a cliche perpetuated by Hollywood, but it would be one I'd be happy to see die off.

Not that my knowledge of historical medieval swords and swordsmanship is super extensive, but having a decent awareness of the basics makes things like this irksome.

Anyooo.........

Okay, maybe I missed something, but isn't everyone burying the headline on this? It's a SITH trooper. Since neither Kylo nor Snoke were technically Sith, it definitely points to the return of Palpatine in a very meaningful way. Sure, it was his laugh at the end of the teaser, but knowing JJ that could've meant anything.

I wonder if the Sith Trooper is an actual Sith- a lightsaber wielding, force chocking Sith, or just an honor guard-like roll for evilness...

Palpatine returning (unless as a hologram or flashback) to me is a terrible idea and I never really cared for it in the comics back in the 1990's either. It undoes the triumph of Return of the Jedi and Anakin's sacrifice to save Luke considering decades later he's still not really dead. It could all be misdirection too considering J.J. teased that Finn would be the one to wield the Skywalker Lightsaber when we all knew it was going to end up being Rey given that she is the protagonist.

I was more on board with it being a new threat rather than have to literally resurrect a villain that had been dead for 30 plus years. As for whether the rumors of him returning are even true it remains to be seen but if they do go the direction that I have keep hearing about from all the fan and entertainment sites it's going to be super lame.

As for the troopers, I mean I guess they could very well be Sith themselves? I don't know. Or they are just repackaged Royal Guards who are no different than the ones from Jedi (who just looked cool even if they didn't do anything) or even the Snoke's stupid red guards from 8. (I really hated those costumes.)

Nothing about this coming installment has grabbed my attention in a positive way. The only thing that I kind of dig is the new variation on the Graflex. That's kinda neat. I'm mostly indifferent to everything I've seen or read.

Ideas for more variants.

Well, Sith Troopers existed - if you wanna get super technical - way back in the KOTOR/SWTOR days when the sith were a race. Sith Trooper in an E9 context would almost assuredly mean affiliated with the sect and not the race. You'd think Kylo's honor guard would be the knights of ren, but he could have them off doing something else with these guys being his protectors. Though you'd think his arrogance would make him think he could handle anyone who came for him short of Rey, and those troopers aren't stopping her so....

I think I'm beginning to see how this going.

After the Emperor's death, Operation Cinder is put into place. It was contingency plan intended eliminate both the Empire and it's enemies at once. At the same time, the Emperor was planning for the return of the Empire. Scouting the Unknown Regions, building shipyards and stores of goods. Coordinates where given to a select few, in order to rendezvous in the Unknown Regions. Now the question is. Why would the Emperor create a contingency plan to restore the Empire after his death? Unless he was preparing for his return.

The new symbol might suggest they are part of faction or sect, as you said.

I was like you. I really disliked Palpatine returning. But as I started to think about it. It makes sense, since he's the one that started it all, by creating Anakin, that he should be there for the end of the story.

I'm also against Anakin returning unless he's going to have a cameo as a Force Ghost with Luke and perhaps impart some line or two of wisdom.

I know that they are insisting on tying the nine films together but to have Palpatine return and have Rey and Kylo have to beat him seems cheap if you ask me. How did he survive all that time? Why did he wait 30 years after ROTJ to make his comeback? What is so special about Kylo Ren or Rey that they can beat him vs. Luke or Anakin? To me it just raises more questions than it really answers and that's not a good idea when you're closing out a trilogy of trilogies.

Snoke and or Kylo could have been more viable threats if they'd developed them better, but nope, we better bring back an already dead villain because the fans will love it!

It's just lame to me. They had the opportunity to really sell us on these new characters but they keep bringing in the old cast to give their new stories weight.
