Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pre-release)

The instant gratification of having information at the click of a button has certainly changed the way fans devour every frame of a new trailer. If you consider the amount of content available and our access to it we've developed into a culture consumed with having everything now.

I mean the fact that I am replying to this on my phone while I wait for my car is evidence of that.

I doubt we will ever see a return to the days when there was a build up of excitement for a movie based partly on the lack of information available and that has just as much to do with technology as it does our lack of patience.

Yeah times have changed. I remember paying for a ticket to see a movie called Wing Commander which was supposed to have a trailer for The Phantom Menace. It did not at my theater. The movie was so bad I just left.

Another situation, I bought the dvd for Adam Sandler's "Little Nicky" because it had a hidden easter egg trailer for Lord of the Rings.

These two examples may sound crazy to people today. Back in those days, if you were a fan of things like that, you had to look for it.

I always thought that was nuts - especially since the trailer for TPM was online as well. I do recall people paying specifically to watch in a theater which to me will always be nuts :)

No one will wait in line overnight for tickets either any more. I'll call that one a change for the better, though. I did it once and it was fun, but definitely wouldn't want to do it regularly - even if regular is once a year.

I remember those days. A lot has changed in 20 years. I remember people going to see Meet Joe Black just to watch the TPM trailer and then leaving before the movie even started.
I watched Enemy of the State (Gene Hackman, Will Smith) for the TPM trailer. Stuck around and actually enjoyed it.

I saw The Incredibles because the ROTS trailer was allegedly attached to it. It wasn't, at least not in that theater.

The over analyzing of trailers has ruined several movies for me recently

I actually found I enjoyed movies where I knew little to nothing about it going into it more than those where I spent months obsessing over every little detail in trailers. Especially when you are waiting all movie for that one shot in the trailer that turns out was cut from the movie or was an alt take etc...

I also have come to despise trailers that sum up every major plot point in 2 minutes. After some trailers I feel like I don't even need to see the movie since I just watched the cliff's notes version of it

So I guess what I am saying is i like a little mystery. Just enough to whet my appetite without me being able to know what's going to happen.

Say what you will about JJ, but I think he did a decent job with that in the Force Awakens trailers and the Rise of Skywalker ones. You get to see who is in it, you get some cool action shots, but overall, there is not really much plot info

Most trailers are created by people unconnected with the actual production- they are hired to get butts into the seats even if they have to ruin the movie experience.
I do think one of the best in recent memory was for 'The Force Awakens'- from the "Chewie, we're home' to the Falcon pinwheeling over the desert, it made you crave to see more...

I loved the Incredibles!

AOTC was definitely the worst of the PT.

If any of the rumors I've recently read about Ep. 9 come to pass when the film is released, then I suspect that it may very well be one of the worst Star Wars films made. I won't discuss the details as they may be potential spoilers but good God do these concepts sound awful. I mean to be fair these could just be insane fan theories and have no credibility whatsoever so I can't say with certainty that this will be a failure but given some of the creative choices made I don't have much hope for it delivering.

Aside from the image leak from a few months ago, I've avoided any spoiler info. I spoiled myself silly for the prequels, but that's just because I knew how it had to end anyway. It's nice (for me, at least--I know everyone's mileage varies) to go back into a SW film and have no idea where we'll be going. I'm enjoying the ride, thus far.

I did the same with the PT. I read everything I could and it's partly why I was so forgiving of them at first.

I'm still pretty forgiving of the PT.
Not that I love every bit of it, in fact, I'd jettison large tracts of it and rescript/reshoot in a heartbeat
BUT
it LARGELY tells a cohesive story from start to finish without too much crap that doesn't make sense or contradict the other films.
Now, I'm not saying that there's NOTHING in there like that but there's not MUCH and, again, it had a single story that was largely planned out from word go.
the Sequel trilogy?
not so much.

Exclusive Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker products and a special exhibit celebrating stormtrooper design are coming to San Diego this month.

// JULY 10, 2019

At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Lucasfilm will celebrate the history of stormtrooper design — and the future.

Fans attending the mega pop-culture event (July 18-21) will be treated to a new exhibit of trooper armor from across the Star Wars saga, including a first look at the next evolution in Imperial/First Order soldiers: the “Sith trooper” from the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It’s a modern and more menacing look befitting its namesake.

“It has some really unique aesthetics to it,” says Madlyn Burkert, Lucasfilm archivist, who is co-producing the exhibit. “And it has some subtle ties to previous stormtrooper designs, which I think fans will enjoy discovering.” There will be a selection of new “Early Release Edition” Sith trooper products debuting at SDCC, which you can see below.

A total of nine different costumes, all screen-used, will be on display at the Lucasfilm pavilion (booth #2913): Imperial stormtrooper, TIE pilot, death trooper, shoretrooper, biker scout, First Order stormtrooper, First Order TIE pilot, Captain Phasma, and Sith trooper. (StarWars.com got a sneak peek at some of these pieces, and is happy to share them here.) Burkert has ordered four new custom mannequins created specifically for stormtroopers. “Most mannequins are made for fashion,” she says with a laugh. “With our armor, we need a different pose.” Appropriately, the Lucasfilm pavilion will have a visual Death Star theme, and the stormtrooper exhibit promises even more surprises, including a photography and video component, the latter of which will feature Star Wars creators such as concept designer Doug Chiang.

Stormtrooper armor from across the saga, ready to deploy from Lucasfilm headquarters in San Francisco.

While Lucasfilm’s previous costume exhibits have largely centered around film releases, this year the goal was to celebrate both The Rise of Skywalker and the Star Wars saga as a whole. The stormtrooper was a natural focal point to accomplish this. “The stormtrooper itself is one of the most iconic parts of Star Wars,” says Este Meza, Lucasfilm’s senior manager of events. “Seeing all of the pieces of armor together is very powerful.”

“We’re really excited to show this design history,” Burkert says. “It takes us from the beginnings of Star Wars and leads us right to the final chapter of the Skywalker saga.”
