Luke had an arc in TLJ, he started the film saying he doesn't want anything to do with the Jedi, and he throws away the lightsaber. But by the end of the film he projects himself across the galaxy holding the lightsaber he threw away as he declares "I will not be the last Jedi."

JJ set up TFA by making a big deal of everyone—whether in the Resistance or Empire—looking for Luke Skywalker because BOTH groups knew of his power and the difference he could potentially make in the conflict. TFA opened with an entire village getting slaughtered just because a person there had handled the map to Luke's location.

RJ chose to keep Luke on the island, and have his only contribution to the entire ST-portion of the saga be a 5-minute distraction via Force projection to Kylo Ren.

Imagine, for a moment, if JJ in Episode 7 had written that Han refused to help Rey when he found her, and instead stayed on his big smuggler's ship for the entire movie. No leaving with Rey and Finn on the Falcon. No conversation and shootout at Maz's place. No meetup with Leia. No return to the Resistance base to participate in the planning for the attack on Starkiller Base. No actually going to Starkiller Base with Rey and Finn to help in the attack. Just stay on his ship where Rey and Finn found him at the beginning of the movie and be grumpy. And then—at the last second—change his mind, but still not leave his ship. He shoots a special hyperspace missiles from across the galaxy to damage the Empire's ship and be a distraction that allows the good guys to escape. Firing the hyperspace missile makes his own ship explode, however, and he dies alone, having never left his ship for the entire movie.

Harrison would have chucked that script right in the bin. I have immense respect for Mark Hamill reading Rian's script and not walking away. He expressed his honest opinion, "Rian, I disagree with everything you've written for my character." But then he chose to be professional, and finish the story in the way it was written by the person to which Disney had entrusted the story. He will always have my mad respect for this.

But please don't try to convince me that Rian's decisions in regard's to Luke gave him a good "arc." Not gonna happen, but I wish you a good day.

Feels strange this year not to have the hardback art-book for xmas,.....I have all the rest going right back to Star Wars

TFA,R1, TLJ & Solo were all released before or at the time of the films release,...The Art of Rise o Skywalker is due mid-March

Speculation is because the main Antagonist in pre-production & 50% of principal filming was Matt Smith's Son of Mortis,....a storyline conceived by JJ with George Lucas

Disney Exec's stepped in worried that this storyline would not please all fans & demanded changes, which brought back Palpatine & cut Lucas's suggestions once again,....this could explain why George didn't attend the Premier & why the Art of book has been delayed,.....maybe they are in the middle of sketching at the minute

Curious. That would have been an odd choice, as the number of people who know about the Mortis gods, would have only been a small part of the audience.

Apples and oranges.

Is Han Solo a Force sensitive that's being tempted to use the Dark Side? No.

Is he the grand master of a religious order that might be unknowingly perpetuating a cycle of war and conflict? No.

And since your using Mark Hamill quotes. Here's one for you. "I got into trouble because… I was quoted as saying to Rian that I fundamentally disagree with everything you decided about Luke, and it was inartfully phrased. What I was, was surprised at how he saw Luke. And it took me a while to get around to his way of thinking, but once I was there it was a thrilling experience. I hope it will be for the audience too."

That was after Disney contacted him to remind him that he was still under contract with them. I know you honestly believe that Mark was on board with Rian's choices but it's simply not true. He's a professional and knows not to bite the hand that feeds so he redacted his true feelings by claiming he phrased his sentiments "inartfully."

You're a good guy Joek3rr but just because you choose to live in denial over TLJ and Marks feelings on it doesn't mean the rest of us are willing to. Once he has enough distance from Star Wars he'll likely revert to what he originally said.

I've seen Luke's scenes in TROS and Mark comes across like he's phoning them in which is uncharacteristic for him because he's always given it his all for Star Wars. It's clear he's done with this trilogy.

Maybe Mark is taking a cue after Jake phoned in his distraction to Crait. Lol

All of Mark’s scenes except for his intro and outro were reshoots. You can hear he’s got a better, but more somber, performance in the trailer dialog. Something happened and they had him reshoot the vast majority of his dialog with Rey. It’s also extremely clear which scenes were reshoots when you look at his awful hair extensions vs. more natural hair.

I don’t really understand why they didn’t dress him in his Crait outfit rather than his hobo dress and hair. Even if you hated TLJ, his costume on Crait was I think what we wanted for the whole film. It was part ROTJ, part robe, but really just one of the better costumes in the whole ST.

I was wondering why i couldn't find it.

I’m curious if we’ll get the “Making Of” books for all these Disney films, too. If I remember correctly the only one that’s been released is for Solo. R1 had one that was cancelled/postponed, same as Force Awakens.

I loathe that movie but love that costume.

I saw it a 2nd time. Very visually appealing and has some emotional hooks but those story changes from TLJ (all the Palpatine stuff) is just wack. While it is an enjoyable watch it is my least favorite of the 3 ST movies.

I see a lot of you are still crying over TLJ in this thread. Plus Disney has already made there investment back from the Lucas purchase so all the "righting the ship" stories are hilarious.

Maybe you should take your complaint about TLJ being brought up with Joek3rr. He seems happy to bring it up all the time.

In a way I agree that Palpatine's return was too much out of left field. But then I remember elements of him being included in TFA concepts, and I was also in the camp that was convinced that JJs original plan for Rey was to be related to Palpatine. I saw the YouTube video pointing out that her TFA lightsaber fighting style was identical to Ep. 3 Sidious, and was sold. But I do think the way he was reintroduced was clunky.

As for crying over TLJ, I have been honest in saying I didn't like it, as have others, but you can rest easy that I've not shed a single tear because of my disappointment in RJ's story decisions. And the only reason I posted what I did above was in response to Joker's neverending hope that he can pull a ROTJ Luke on us and redeem my and others' opinions of TLJ by way of ongoing dialog. But at least he isn't trying to pull a TLJ Luke and allow his disappointment in us to create within him a temporary fearful insanity that compels him to murder us in our sleep. So there's that...

I thought the Palpy thing was weird because, in the Zahn EU and the other MAJOR stories around the same time frame, I don't remember any Sith actually being concerned with getting lucky or having consorts. (I did not get the into Ancient Sith stuff ) I thought their being was so consumed with a lust of power and utter corruption that getting some booty was no longer a concern. That was the one thing that threw me. My wife laughed at me because of the face I made when they revealed that.
