Just back from taking the lad to see it. I'll conceed that it's probably the best of the 3 new films, but still does nothing for me. So Liea says don't hide who you are but right at the end Ray calls herself Skywalker - what! So lesson well learnt there. Just sums up the film. Star Destroyer planet killers - boring! 1000s of ships just because we can with CGI - just not that exciting looks good as screen saver perhaps but didn't work for me. I knew he was back in the film but to bring back the Emperor is just f'in lazy, no one suffering altitude sickness or feeling the cold running about on those Star Destroyers? We could have had some really good stories of waring factions trying to take control and a rebellion/Jedi who simply were trying to bring a lasting peace. Anything would have been better than poorly conceived rubbish. I won't go out of my way to see this again. It's sad but these films and sorry to say the new series have taken away that special feeling I had for Star Wars it's clearly now simply about the coin, forget story telling!

Exactly. Rebellions are frequently made from people only united by their common enemy. The Empire falls and nobody can agree what happens next. The guns all start pointing at each other.

"The One" becomes somebody who needs to re-unite a galaxy at war with itself. Luke, Leia and Han can still be tragic heroes with a more realistic arc. They overthrew fascism only to bring about anarchy.

I could see that for a story taking place 5, to 10 years after ROTJ, not 30.

Considering how long it took for the reconstruction of Europe after WW2, imagine how much longer it would take to reestablish order and a functional government that spans not just one globe but the thousands that make up the Star Wars galaxy.

I don't think it would have been far fetched to explore that idea in this series. Alas, it's just a thought.

I finally got to see the movie yesterday. I had a really good time and my mom loved it (she's 66 and loves SW). Much better than I expected. It sanded down a few things that I reeeeally hated about The Last Jedi (the Holdo manouver, Leia flying in space and so on) lore-wise.

Still not convinced about bringing Palpatine back though. And still not convinced about the scale of the armadas and the mass destruction weapons. There were a few things that felt a little rushed to me in the script, maybe not entirely justified but, it seemed like JJ wanted to stuff this movie with the content of two movies, so I guess there's an excuse for that. Felt a little too long as well. My attention dropped a tiny bit around the middle of te movie.

But I really enjoyed it. Chewie gets his medal! Woohoo! And I got emotional with the ending. I'm just glad the saga has an acceptable ending, even though I'm still thinking this trilogy is not for me. Bittersweet feeling to wonder what Disney could have achieved if this trilogy was better planned. And I'm relieved that this is over and we can focus on The Mandalorian, Kenobi and whatever new Disney comes up with in the SW universe (PLEASE be something about the old republic, something super mystical about the ancient Sith, like a bazillion years before Palpatine, so that it changes nothing in the so called Skywalker Saga).

Oh god, I’m so happy I never heard of this...then again Mara Jade was the “Emperor’s Hand”, so...:lol:

And she did start out as one of his consorts, until he realized how strong she was in the force and began training her. It's... not my favorite thing about her backstory.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh...what lol. No. It's right there on Wook:

The Emperor took Jade from her parents and brought her to the planet Coruscant at a very young age, where he began to train her in the Force, although officially she was one of the Imperial Palace's dancers. Years later, Jade remembered little about her early life besides her parents' reluctance to let her go and her own certainty that she was going to leave with the Emperor.[9] She did recall at one point that she had had a falling-star globe as a child and had gotten in trouble after breaking it to see how it worked.[10] Her master trained her in the ways of the Force and she was made into an agent of the Empire.[9] Some of the Imperial court assumed her to simply be a dancer or one of Palpatine's concubines.[6]

Throughout Jade's youth, she was pushed through an intensive training regimen—which involved training alongside the Imperial Royal Guard[11] and learning covert espionage and assassination skills, at which she was adept by the age of fourteen[2]—and became an "Emperor's Hand," one of Palpatine's personal assassins,[12] after a final test in which she successfully broke into Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin's private quarters.[6]

She was certainly a special snowflake to Palps, but he never touched her. The whole "dancer" thing was a cover to obscure her real occupation.

Just one question....how did palpatine survive and end up in the rise of skywalker? I clearly remember Vader tossing his butt down that shaft. That scene was meant for the death of the emperor by Vader. That’s my only gripe about episode 9 they didn’t explain how the emperor survived , they made it look like he’s been around the whole time. Major plot hole in my opinion so I would like to know was the emperor that died in ROTJ a clone ? Because in TROS we see clone chambers of snoke so I wonder was that in a way to imply that palpatine in jedi was a clone too and the real emperor has been on exigol the whole time.

Mystery box.

In order for you to get your answer, it would have required the writers to come up with one.

The ending was ok but would have been better to show the force ghosts of Luke , Anakin, Leia, Ben Solo (since he turned back). Kinda like the same way ROTJ ended but all skywalkers. Thus really ending the skywalker saga

Possibly yes. They left this somewhat ambiguous, probably on purpose. Classic JJ “mystery box” they dug a hole and didn’t have a plan for getting out. One of the things that doesn’t please me about the sequels in general as they are full of plot holes.

Lucas at least had a plan and story arch to the OT and Prequels. It wasn’t always executed the best and had its ups and downs but the story was there usually with plenty of lore to back it up.

Disney would tell you not to worry since there will be plenty of comic books and novels explaining that in the future.

To me that is the exact opposite of how you tell a story in cinema, but that's what we're gonna get.

Disappointed. I feel like it negated the first six movies. I guess Anakin was never the chosen one. It was a Palpatine all along... After all the years of building a massive fleet, it was destroyed that quickly(?)... So was the emperor, I guess... Like was said earlier, thank goodness for the Mandalorian...
