Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Post-release)

What did you think of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker?

TFA: Han dies
TLJ: Luke dies
TROS: Leia dies

What was the point of bringing them all back just to kill them off one by one?

It just breaks my heart.

:(

Yeah. Same in the OT --

ANH: Obi-wan dies
ROTJ: Yoda and Anakin die

What was the point of bringing them back just to kill them one by one? They were the heroes of the Clone Wars. Assuming you watch for the first time in George's prescribed order. It makes sense for the older generation to pass on and leave the universe-saving to the new generation, at least in generational epics. Even if we take issue with the specific means/context.
Can you explain the whole dyad thing

I thought he said diode lol
A balanced twosome. A little like the Son and Daughter in the Clone Wars' Mortis arc. The whole thing from TLJ of "Darkness rises and Light rises to meet it". For all the George talks about eliminating the Dark Side being what's needed to balance the Force, there's definite precedence that he himself wrote of incredibly powerful personification of both Dark and Light held in balance, somewhere, for some reason.

I almost wonder if Ben and Rey were the Force's attempt to recreate those vergences after Mortis got wrecked. But both ended up wibbling between Dark and Light too much and the waveform collapsed. We dont see Rey do anything OP after Ben dies. I wonder if her ability in the Force will be lessened somewhat by losing her "other half" -- and possibly also Palpatine's facilitating of things following his revival (somewhere in the last five years or so -- prior to that it was just the Knights of Ren/Acolytes From Beyond and a few solo operators continuing to enact his will).

Other fun things: That is apparently "Chief Wicket" in that one shot. And not only is the younger Ewok with him Wicket's son, he's played by Warwick's son.

Overall, I like it, especially taking all three together. I still feel it should be more films, too much happens off screen or is never explained, and there were other bad creative decisions all through... But I think it's my favorite of the ST. Psab keel, I do think you should see it, if only to see how the story leaks actually work up on the screen. And also so we can resume our discussions.

Douche or not, I've dealt with ignorant asshats who've sat on their phones thumbing through Facebook almost the entire time of a showing. You get two chances with me. First time I ask for the phone to be put away, I'm polite. Second time... not so much. I don't ask a third time. I just kick the back of your seat and flick popcorn at you for the rest of the show.

Believe me, I'm NOT advocating for people to be on their phones at the movies, but this guy assaulted another person over it and clearly was an ******* to not just the guy on his phone but to everyone else in the theater. He could have, I don't know, politely asked him to not be on his phone instead of hitting him.

I guess common decency is too much to ask for these days. The same goes for the people who are inconsiderate enough to be on their phones the entire movie. You have to wonder why they even went in the first place if all they were going to do was ignore the screen.

It's this kind of thing that partly keeps me away from theaters these days. That and trailers not grabbing me enough to warrant the trip.

I digress.

I can't tell if the guy was drunk or if he was just an Ultra Passionate Fan(boy). Bit of an overreaction either way.

I hope they find the guy. I want to know if he has a youtube channel.

So I was confused when kylo was explaining Rey’s origin

Anyone know exactly what happened? Palpatine had a son? That’s all he said right?

So...how much they pay Harrison Ford to be in that one scene?

I'm ready to bet that scene was filmed during TFA production. Kylo's character arc is one of the very few things that seem planned from the beginning, we all knew he would redeem himself on episode 9 or earlier. And it would make sense to pay Ford a gazillion dollars only once and be done with it (to great satisfaction of both parts)

I can't think of a single memorable shot in RoS.

The shot with the sith cube spanning almost the whole screen was nice IMO. Not really memorable, but it did felt ominous.

Also, when Rey's parent first appear in the flashback, I thought they were the Lars'. I swear, same clothes and hairstyle! That was confusing lol

So, all that fuss about the holdo maneuver and no one comments on "lightspeed skipping"?

When I saw that I actually got mad and said to myself, “Did they really just steal this idea from the ‘700 jumps’ scene from Guardians of the Galaxy 2? How lazy is that? Sure felt like it to me.

I never thought I’d say this, but I’m glad this Skywalker saga is over. This movie was way better than the bantha poodoo that was The Last Jedi, but these films just fell short for me. I can’t say anything that hasn’t already been said.

I wanted the magic of my childhood from the 70s and 80s to return with these films. It’s my fault for believing that could happen, I was naive and let emotion and nostalgia get the best of me. Lucas couldn’t do it 99 with the start of PT and they couldn’t do it with this trilogy. It’s not their fault, it’s mine.

All I know is that Rogue One and The Mandalorian are proof that good Star Wars can still be made. I’m looking forward to more Star Wars that doesn’t come with my preconceived expectations.

In related news, Manbaby loses his rag when person checks their phone during RoS screening. He punches the guy in the face then screams at the audience "I'M A REAL STAR WARS FAN!" and "I'VE WAITED A GODDAMN YEAR FOR THIS!"

But did he end up seeing the movie somewhere else and what did he think of it? That's what I want to know!

I would've chucked out the guy using the phone an given this hero a free months pass.
Getting punched for using a phone in a movie theatre is the minimum level of punishment.

I'm going to give a bit of advice

There are folks here who are big Star Wars fans, those who read everything, have all the facts, I do notice that there are a few missing or quiet at the moment.

The Rise of Skywalker was a heavy meal, there was a lot happening & a lot to digest, all the new Force powers, lineage, Lightspeed hopping etc.
These will now need broken down & properly sorted into canon fact boxes

But do remember this, JJ Abrams gave an interview with Vanity Fair in May

Abrams discussed his approach with Vanity Fair and made it clear that it was different from his approach on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which he previously directed.

He explains:

“Working on nine, I found myself approaching it slightly differently. Which is to say that, on seven, I felt beholden to Star Wars in a way that was interesting—I was doing what to the best of my ability I felt Star Wars should be.”
Abrams then details his approach for The Rise of Skywalker.

“It felt slightly more renegade; it felt slightly more like, you know, **** it, I’m going to do the thing that feels right because it does, not because it adheres to something.”
The debates and arguments after seeing Luke toss his lightsabre away,.....the discussions we had about the Admiral Holdo manoeuvre, the in-depth explanations of how Rey is or isn't a Mary Sue.....etc

But when you look on how quickly the writers erase or forget what they set up in the previous movie, I really think all the time digesting & debating new canon is a total waste of time,......Star Wars used to be art,....now it is just a movie,.....let go

I don’t get why the “f*ckit” line is taken negatively. It’s perplexing to me.

I want to direct on a big scale. I likely will. And if I have a choice to do an ip adhering to what the suits want or say “f*ckit, I’m doing what feels right”, I’m doing it the way I want to do it, because I know what I think is entertaining. If it fails. Crap! That would suck.

but if i knock it out of the park, then I get more of that freedom down the line. I on’t get accused of just remaking a new hope for 4 years.

seems a lot of people took that as “f*ck it I’m going to crash this into the ground for fun”

maybe I’m misreading in the above quote, but in most cases that’s discussed, that’s the take have only it. Weird.

I don't see it as negative,...I see it as he tried to follow the SW bible for TFA, was annoyed that Rian Johnston dropped the baton that he had handed him,....so now he says **** it!, I'll go with my gut,....thats why theres so many things that contradict the canon.

Good on him, I applaud him for making an enjoyable film,....but as I said, i'm in a better place now & I think everyone should be, the film is all over the place & terrible,....but I don't hate it,...I'd watch it again for the fun,....it's as daft as an ashtray on a motorbike

It’s kind of funny how a lot of discussion is carried on as if hating TLJ is a forgone conclusion but I personally like that movie a lot better than TROS.

As far as the idea of Rey dying instead of Ben, I know she’s too important to too many people but I would have been pleasantly surprised if that had been the ending. This movie was the only time I could see any merit to the “Mary sue” argument. She kind of sleepwalks through a greatest hits of the OT, gets to play with all of the main characters toys (the Falcon, Red 5, Leia’s saber even) and then gets the happy ending after defeating the grandest evil that we’ve ever seen.

it’s not a hill I’m willing to die on one way or another, but my takeaway from these three movies now that they’re done and dusted is that I’m going to enjoy the OT and jump into the Thrawn trilogy for what was long considered the true follow-up.

Looks like punch guy got escorted out and phone guy got to stay.
Backwards world we're living in...

I loved the movie but only had one gripe. Why did Emperor Palpatine have NO Emperor make up on for almost the entire movie? I mean he looked like Darth Sidious from the prequels with only his face painted white with black lips. No head ridges, no wrinkles, Nada. It almost looked like a different character. Only after he sucked the lifeforce out of Rey and Kylo did he start looking like his old self.

And dyad is something that consists of two elements. Mother/child, husband/wife, that sort of thing.
