Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

I'm still hoping there's no flashbacks. Want to explain a character's sudden change of heart, or justify an odd plot twist? Plug in a flashback. It comes off as sloppy, especially when the closest we've seen to one in the saga thus far is a Force vision. (Unless you want to consider the P.T. one big flashback.)

im a huge JJ fan, i know he loves his flash backs. at first once i heard he was going to have them in star wars i felt little uncomfortable, i now think you can pull it off. but i understand where your coming from by showing a flash back to answer a question it kinda feels like a rip off..

again 30years apart from the last film i think a few flash backs won't hurt filling in gaps

i dont know how far i can talk about it in this thread. but we are pretty sure its real, hes in "training" right now, we all wondered what they meant by that
Well, Christensen did some weight training to bulk up a little for Revenge of the Sith so he wouldn't look too scrawny in the Vader suit. And I'm sure it's been a while since he's handled a stunt lightsaber, so he could be sharpening those skills as well.

Or maybe he's taking acting lessons. :D

Depending on how they handled it, including Hayden would be one of the few things they could do that would seriously dampen my feelings for these movies. Beyond Hayden being a terrible actor, I think including Anakin Skywalker in any real capacity would be dumb, whether it be via flashback or some "resurrection" scheme. A Force ghost could conceivably work, but I'd rather they just leave that alone. Even that seems pretty cringe-worthy.

The other major thing that could really ruin things for me pertains to the old rumor regarding Maisie Richardson-Sellers' character. The fact that they seem to be keeping her under wraps and we've heard virtually nothing regarding her is worrisome to me.

Yeah, Natalie Portman was terrible in the PT also. These younger, less experienced actors probably need more competent direction than GL could provide. HC is a bit of a wild card, but NP has certainly proven her chops.

I haven't heard anything about that? are u talking about ep7 or ep8? I was under the impression HC is training for ep8

The best thing I've read lately is that interview with the guy from hasbro. He said that currently, all the merchant represents only the first 3rd of the film.

There is no greater news than that

What merchant? There's going to be a merchant in the fist third of the film? It's not going to be Watto is it? Please say that said merchant isn't Watto. :D

I'm not a PT lover nor hater, but it was not Hayden's fault for a badly written script.

And don't forget a lousy director to go along with that lousy script.

Yeah the rumors are Hayden is training for Ep.8. Maisie Richardson-Sellers is in Ep.7.

The only accolades I ever heard Hayden getting were for his role in Life as a House. Bad directing or not, the past 10-12 years certainly haven't proven that he is anything but a mediocre actor.

Gonna step in and say that comment is a little harsh and revisionist. Sure, the prequels were subpar and not what we are hoping for - but the original SW directed by Lucas is the single reason most of us are even interested in this thread (and the SW "universe") 38 years on (and, in many cases, the very foundation of why we got into fandom and this hobby in particular.). Sure, I've heard Lucas had lots of help on the script for SW, but I don't believe I've ever heard anyone allege that somebody else directed it for him. And that film really did start the modern renaissance for sci-fi films,in large part due to his direction - especially the kinetic space battle scenes which were such an about face from the "Star Trek/Silent Running" type 70s depictions of space. But also the sense of swashbuckling fun and the deep, lived-in world he built in his images.

So, yeah, you may not have liked the way George's directing style aged, but let's not start painting his entire career with the "lousy director" brush when it's the very film he directed that has brought most of here.

"Shattered Glass". Much better than "Life as a House" (he isn't playing a troubled teen, for one), and even Rolling Stone called his performance "a revelation." Just watched it again last weekend, and I strongly recommend it.

Ok, fair enough. Let me revise my statement by saying that at one time Lucas was a good director, if not great, but has, since the original Star Wars, become a lousy director and did a poor job on the Prequels. I've always felt that Lucas was being arrogant when it was announced the he would be directing the Prequels. Here's a man who hadn't directed a single movie in decades, directed only 1 of the 3 original Star Wars movies and is now going to direct the Prequels, all because he can. What he should have done was at least funded or chose some small films before pre-production on the Prequels even began to reacquaint himself with the art of directing and to essentially start training for them instead of jumping in all out of shape, so to speak.

Although a Vader appearance in Rogue One would likely be Vader in a suit and they wouldn't need Haden for that possibly. In Ep. VIII I could see a flashback or force ghost Hayden but what would he need to train for?

Wouldn't have helped. It's not like doing the first prequel got him in shape for the second, or the experience of the prequel trilogy prepared him to make a quality film out of Red Tails. The truth is that Lucas was never a good director. A lot goes into a finished movie, and several players on the original STAR WARS contributed to the ultimately successful on-screen product. The actors famously complained that his direction on that film was almost nonexistent. The production limitations which were brilliantly navigated by Gary Kurtz, Rick Baker, the VFX department at ILM and others delivered the look and tone we could all believe in - an aesthetic which frustrated Lucas until he was able to "fix" it with the awful Special Editions, or do STAR WARS the way he'd always wanted to with the Phantom Menace. While there were some great hires on the original film, it'd be a mistake to credit Lucas directly with Ben Burtt's iconic sound design or the brilliant production design of Ralph McQuarrie. It's well-documented that the original Lucas-driven cut was a disaster of pacing and structure, before the edit was rescued by Marcia Lucas. To understand Lucas as a director, all we have to do is look at the projects which he had more direct control of top to bottom: THX-1138, the Star Wars prequels, and Red Tails. He's not a good director, and never was. Just a great idea guy and a brilliant businessman. It's not a terrible exaggeration to say that I love the universe established by Star Wars despite him, not because of him.

I agree. I actually like the idea Force vision, but flashback would just seem out of place in a Star Wars movie after 6 films without one.
