Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Quite frankly, for the opportunity to direct Star Wars? Suck it up JJ. Battle over the content, not the shooting schedule.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Not for nothing, but kids today are insane. I would've killed to spend a year or so in Europe when I was in high school. Only would the children of the wealthy complain about such a "sacrifice". Really? :rolleyes

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

That was funny. :)

YOU don't like the prequels or SE. SOME adult fans agree with YOU. But just because YOU are tired of STAR WARS, think the market is saturated, and disappointed doesn't make you CORRECT. Never confuse your opinion with economic reality.

TheForce.net: Lucasfilm Debunks Rumor That J.J. Abrams Is Considering Abandoning Episode VII

I didn't see anyone intentionally saying "Star Wars is an irrelevant franchise for everyone on the planet." You'd have to be some kind of moron to believe that. Mostly I think people who say stuff like that mean that FOR THEM the franchise is dead or at least diminished. I can understand that. For me it is diminished, certainly. My enthusiasm in the pre-PT days was unbridled. Now? Well, I look forward to showing my unborn children the OOT, but outside of that...eh, I can take it or leave it. Some stuff is cool, lots of stuff isn't. There was definitely a period, however, where Star Wars was "dead to me," but that was mostly my frustration about the direction Lucas took the franchise. But that's just me. I don't think anyone can credibly argue that the franchise is OBJECTIVELY dead or irrelevant in some universal sense.

I do. That clip you posted reinforces it. I don't have an issue with the Ewoks. As an adult I know they're not great but I loved them as a kid.

When my kids are older I'm sure they won't think Jar-Jar was great but they won't have the same hate that I have for the character.

I know that the first two were great, and the third was entertaining if somewhat juvenile. I do think that they are qualitatively and objectively better made films than the PT, but I recognize that much of the complaints leveled against the PT can be applied to aspects of the OT. The OT isn't perfect by any stretch. I think, however, that the PT will generally be recognized as flawed, even by today's kids, as they grow up. What'll keep it warm in their hearts is the nostalgia. But even setting nostalgia aside, I think Star Wars and Empire are damn fine adventure films.

I've lost count of how many times I've posted this and no one ever listens. Lucas said balance, for the Jedi, means the absence of the Sith. I don't think you'd ever get rid of everyone using the Dark Side, it's just the Sith have more control over it than the untrained people using it. People keep saying it's a 50/50 thing, it's not. The idea of balance is coming from the Jedi, so it's their view of what balance is, not the literal definition of balance.

That's a good point. It is also, however, something Lucas never addressed IN the films. This is one of my big criticisms of his approach to the PT. There's so much explanation required after the fact and outside of the films to make it make sense. It's just bad writing, basically. If you have to go to THAT level to explain what the hell is going on and why, no, no, it really DOES make sense after the fact....then you probably wrote it poorly. The film should be able to speak for itself. Some symbolic aspects might require explanation, but narratively the film shouldn't require a ton of heavy lifting.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Due to the poor treatment of the rest of the star wars galaxy, I hope episode 7 falls flatter than jar jar.. When I heard Phineas and Ferb was going to be added to the new show Rebels as a guest slot, I had fears confirmed. this is nothing more that a cow for the milking by Disney, they don`t give a crap about the fans or the cannon or anything that presently exsists in the star wars galaxy. As long as someone some where is willing to shell out some cash they will sell it, merchandise it and mix and match with their current Garbage... next stop One Direction will get the nod for the sound track!

That's exactly what I was saying. :) It's the reason I love ROTJ and don't have a problem with Ewoks.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Yup. I actually have come to recognize that, while I say "The OT is simply better" I'm really only including, like, 2/3 of ROTJ. The ewok stuff is just as weak as some of the less obnoxious stuff from the PT. Jar Jar, though...I don't think anyone will ever look back on him fondly. Even nostalgia won't save that.

My solution to this, however, will be to probably only show AOTC and ROTS to my kids IF I show them anything from the PT at all. We may just be a strict orthodox Star Wars household. :)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I watched ROTJ (1983 version) in AVCHD a week ago,(downloaded on dvd!) i loved it all over again, some of it made me smile like an indulgent father, ewoks especially, but it's good, solid Star wars. Yes...there's hokey bits, but i still maintain it has some of the strongest scenes in the saga (of 3 films)....

Conversely, my son and i watched TPM BD, wow jar-jar sucks, anakin is annoying...damn, maul died.....
Then AOTC....i spent most of the film going, "real beard, fake beard, real beard, fake beard...." regarding Obi-wan....also, battle droids are seriously getting on my **** by now.....
Then ROTS.......we made it approx. 1 hour into it before i couldn't take any more nonsense, ridiculously small jedi fighters, och....it just made me tired....

So, No matter how bad we think ROTJ might be, there's always something a LOT worse.....

Rich

p.s. we really REALLY tried to love SW as a six film saga....it just DID NOT WORK!!!!!!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I didn't have a clue until I just Googled it... Has to be a mistake. How do these characters remotely fit into a Star Wars: Rebels scene...?

Maybe their voices??? There is no way to make those characters recognizeable AND fit into this style animation...

After going for a YouTube spin to actually hear what these characters sound like..., I'm definitely not feeling any of this for what I'd recognize as Star Wars.

...Then AOTC....i spent most of the film going, "real beard, fake beard, real beard, fake beard..."
THANK YOU!!! At last I have proof that I wasn't the only person who did this! None of my friends noticed the truly horrid fake beard until after I had pointed it out to them. To this day, every time I watch AotC all I can think is, "Lucas spent all that money on props and wardrobe and CGI and locations and painting bare sets green, but he couldn't afford one person who knew how to apply a decent fake beard?" :confused

By the way, in this case "fake beard" also means "wig". Ewan McGregor had shaved the beard and cut his hair for Black Hawk Down and didn't have enough time to regrow either for the AotC reshoots.
