Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Speaking of the trench run, have you ever noticed that there is a jump cut in the POV shot of entering the trench? It's kind of obvious if you do a frame by frame. You are above the Death Star surface heading down to the trench, then there is one of those laser blasts hits where the screen goes completely white for just, like, one or two frames, and then you actually enter the trench. It happens on every POV shot of entering the trench. I'm not sure if it's a switch from a landscape model that has a smaller trench to the model that has the larger trench or if it was done for a lens change for focus issues or what. I'm thinking it was a model change of the landscape, but it is definately there. Anybody else ever noticed this?

Dude, when you've watched that movie in the triple digits, you notice everything.

You're right on your theory; it was a transition between two different models on two different scales. It's actually completely brilliant filmmaking.

Reminds me of that scene in Star Trek III, where Kruge is falling into the lava below. There is a flash of 'lightning', which transitions the actor to the puppet which replaces him for the remainder of the fall!

That's the genius of 'practical' filmmaking which I miss so much. :(

How can you not notice it? :lol

That jump cut is so iconic now. If GL ever smoothed that out it would look really weird. My "in universe" excuse was the shock wave from the blast made the ship jump a bit. :)

Yeah it's like when Luke switches off his lightsaber, or closes the blast doors on the Death Star... freeze, stand still - remove lightsaber blade/close door and... action! :p

I was really looking forward to seeing the trench run in 3D. I would have even sat through the special edition version again just to see it. Wish those plans didn't get cancelled.

Anyone know WHY they got cancelled????? :(

I agree, brilliant film making. Wow, I've noticed that shot for decades now, yet in all the documentaries, forums and books I've read I've never heard anyone mention it before. Glad to know now that I was not the only one who caught that.

"triple digits"? I'm probably in quadruple digits by now!:lol

I also like the little "bounce" that is right as you level off in the trench. Great touch!!

More focus on the new stuff. Also, I don't think TPM did very well when they re-released it. Why that's a surprise I have no clue. :lol

I hope TPM not doing well is not the real reason. Any fool knows that if the OT got to the theatre in 3D it would be sold out week in week out. :(

I imagine it was a part of it although you're right, so far as re-releases go the OT is the cash cow.

Doubtful. They would be converting the extra special edition OT not the OOT, and since fans are almost as upset with those ones as they are with the prequels, it wouldn't fare any better than TPM did, and maybe even worse since the younger generation, who saw the PT first and like them better, wouldn't go to see them in the same numbers that an OOT release would bring in from the older fans.

I don't think so. Most fans who own the OT now (in fact almost all of them) have the special editions. The OT would have done MUCH better although "sold out" is probably overstating it. It's only the hard core that seem to care. Yes, that's a lot of us, but not as many as you would think.

I just don't think GL has cared much at all about the original trilogy after doing the prequels. Instead of getting the prequels to match the OT in various ways, it seems to have happened the other way around. And to gauge how well the OT would have done vis a vis The Phantom Menace was a poor metric to say the least. The OT would without a doubt have swamped the prequel showings...

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I think so too!

Not just the trench run in 3D, how about Hoth in 3D?

Hell, even the battle over Endor. That opening shot with all the ships flying at the Falcon? Hell ya.

I did take my kids to see TPM. I would have taken them to the others as well.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I don't like the special editions either but I sure a hell would rather see 85% of whats left of the original OT in 3D in the cinema than any of the prequels.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Has it occurred to anyone that we OT fans constitute what are euphimistically referred to as "dinosaurs"...?

SHUT UP! :lol:lol:lol

To be fair, my kids are huge OT fans as are many of their friends. They asked for Star Wars one day and I put on TPM. They said "No, real Star Wars". So I put ESB on and they were happy. :)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Parenting done right. :cool

I don't think it makes you a dinosaur to prefer the better movies. :D And I don't think it makes you a dinosaur to prefer the original version of those movies either. Just a purist. Nothing wrong with that.

Yes it has. Now if you'll excuse me, there's a cheeseburgersaurus over there that looks rather tasty.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I think OT fans also constitute a large percentage of where the revenue comes from.
Without them dinosaurs we would not be where we are today:lol
