Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

:lol Signs of hope...! :lol

SHUT UP! :lol:lol:lol

To be fair, my kids are huge OT fans as are many of their friends. They asked for Star Wars one day and I put on TPM. They said "No, real Star Wars". So I put ESB on and they were happy. :)

Parenting done right. :cool

I don't think it makes you a dinosaur to prefer the better movies. :D And I don't think it makes you a dinosaur to prefer the original version of those movies either. Just a purist. Nothing wrong with that.

Yes it has. Now if you'll excuse me, there's a cheeseburgersaurus over there that looks rather tasty.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

If I'm a dinosaur, I hope Episide VII is like Jurrasic Park.

:lol:thumbsup

And, taking that line from a different angle can you imagine if this film was the dramatic leap of "OMG I've never seen anything so impressive in my life" that JP was in 1993??? I would probably crap my pants in the theatre right then and there.

:lol :thumbsup I'm in the same boat, I was discussing the changes made in the special edition with my brother-in-law last week and he referred to Han shooting 1st in ANH, my daughter was walking past us and stopped to correct him "The movie is STAR WARS" (and she did speak it in capitals!) "and Han didn't shoot 1st, Han's the only guy that shot" He looked at her and said "Really?" she said "Yeah Greedo was a punk" and went out to swing in the the yard :lol :lol Our SE discs have been sitting on the shelf for a while now ;)
Our children are A New Hope! (she'd kill me for saying that!) ;)

I love that. When my kids are old enough, they will be taught the same :D

Yeah, these stories do sound encouraging. I don't have any children and none of my contemporaries do so I'm not exposed to them, but it's nice to hear the classics are being appreciated, and understood, by the young folks of today, though it helps a great deal to have parents who are steeped in the OT. I think if the parents themselves were indifferent it'd likely be a different story. But either way, thank goodness the prequels haven't poisoned them all! :)

And somebody has to figure out a way to incorporate that Wookiee belly dancer into Ep. VII. If Jabba wasn't dead, that'd make a great entertainment piece for his throne room... Ha! :p

I'm in a similar position -- no kids of my own. Though my friends do have kids (for whom I'm Uncle Dan), who will be introduced to the OOT, come hell or high water.

I've spoken with my friends and specifically said "When you finally do show them the films, please, PLEASE let me be there to do it."

I think a lot of the prequel-focus was less about the prequel films themselves and more about the multimedia blitz that happened alongside them, such as the Clone Wars cartoons, action figures, etc. But that stuff faded somewhat over time (although the Clone Wars still continues in cartoon form, I guess). There's another aspect to this, though, and that's the fact that kids are absolutely bombarded with stuff these days, so I think the impact of the PT on them is FAR less than the impact of the OT on those who were kids when it came out.

The OT faced far less competition in terms of movie "space" in kids' lives. There just weren't as many other similar products out there at the time. By contrast, you've got tons of movie franchises now, all vying for that same "space" in kids' lives, to the point where I suspect that eventually the kids who grew up with the PT will look at them as "just another movie franchise" rather than holding them in the regard that OT fans who grew up with it still do today.

You're absolutely right. There was NOTHING of the magnitude of Star Wars when it was fresh in 1977. I think had there been any sort of competition with it, it still would've been a very, very strong contender for the "hearts and minds" and all that. But seeing that there really was nothing else to compare, my brain, along with millions of others, was fertile ground for it to take root and take on the dimensions that it ultimately did. And two fantastic (I realize that's subjective) sequels to go along with it were icing on the cake. And they weren't spoiled before they ever came out with the internet. For the kids of the prequel era and later, it's "been there, done that".

There's always a generational gap where the prior generation thinks it had it "better" than the current, and I honestly try not to make the differences seem so dramatic or arrogant, but that's not to say I'm not glad that I came along when I did because I definitely am.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I'll just quote the Phantom Menace's tagline "Every Generation Has A Legend" ;)

Also some may have argued back in the 70's:

"Star Wars? Bah! What is this none sense? Fritz Lang's Metropolis now that's epic!" :darnkids

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I remember being chilled to the bone when I read that tagline. And also seeing that first Vader shadow poster.

Good times.

I had the very same experience, must have watched the trailers some hundred times or so :D especially since that's all I had to watch since the film opened on May 19th in the US but we here in Sweden had to wait until the third week in August! And then we had to deal with the crawl graphics translated into Swedish, The Phantom Menade - Det Mörka Hotet(The Dark threat), ridiculous!
