Re: Star Wars Episode VII
I would argue the opposite. Who is there to pick up after the Empire? No other large nations, just a league of rebels. That end battle was their ENTIRE fleet. Hardly anything to control the galaxy with.
There is nobody to pick up the weak. It's a situation with a power vacuum and there will be many people/factions who try to fill it. Like Afghanistan after the initial war. The country broke into sections controlled by warlords and that's WITH a large strong nation trying to make sense of things.
Individual worlds can still be powerful and wealthy and by immediately forming an alliance can help those who need it. This isn't the ancient world where there is nothing but vacuum outside the power of the Roman or whatever Empire. Sure, the Empire was oppressive, but that still doesn't mean that they left the Galaxy dry of resources. I'm not seeing anything that reminds me that things will be like we see in Afghanistan... a country broken by several invasion attempts and an oppressive religious rule, where BIG outsiders tried to interfere - very different scenario from anything in the Star Wars series. If this is a return to the Republic, then there really isn't a power vacuum - it's just a change of government style. Things got pretty well organized and set up after the French Revolution. Things were also pretty well organized after the Cuban revolution - of course... he just formed an even worse rule. The same happening in Russia after the revolution.
Which... usually is the case... those replacing the evil regime often tend to be even more evil, when it comes down to it and just used the population and the cause to put himself in power and those loyalists following him will get drunk with the power.
So, I'm not seeing a vacuum. I'm seeing a change to something potentially worse - all in the name of the revolution.
The big question then is... who is this new evil? And it would just be lame if he's a force user. If they go that route that is.
It still creates a conflict for our heroes... 'cause... they still believe in the cause... however, the cause is being used against them and the people, but anyone questioning those in charge will be deemed sympathizers of the old regime. It's a much more adult premise where you are not fighting only a visible enemy, but an invisible one as well, as you cannot really trust anyone.
It'll be like East Germany.
Hmm... maybe a too adult setting for Star Wars which is usually more B/W regarding good and evil.
I'm waiting for the Special Edition in which they reverse
all the tinkering Lucas did and restore the Original Trilogy movies to their original theatrical versions.
YES! The unaltered original theatrical version. WOOOOO. I need it. If I get it, then all disdain towards Lucas' tinkering will be gone - he can tinker ALL he wants, as long as I have the option to get the version I love.
