Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

The good thing with the new ones is that with the way GL shafted me with TPM my hopes have been lowered. Even if this movie sucks big time there's no way I'm coming out of it feeling worse than I did after seeing the TPM.

Really? You were that let down by TPM? Sure, it wasn't a great movie, but it is still far better than AotC and RotS. I didn't feel that severe let-down until AotC.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

You just get quickly glossed over hints of those things - you don't really see Anakin being the great man, the great friend, the great star fighter pilot, all the things Obi-Wan remembers with pride and sadness... you don't see any of that. So naturally... that's the big letdown for me. There is no fall of a great man and the betrayal of everything he stood for, to make Obi-Wan remember him in that

Actually, we have that, it's called The Clobe Wars animated series.

Yeah in hindsight it's not as bad as AOTC or ROTS (especially AOTC) but man I can't express how empty I felt coming out of TPM

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

No, but we have demonstrated it is based on stories directly from GL, so it's as close as you will likely ever get and I for one enjoy them immensely. And I have that entire aspect of this saga presented to me in a fun way, that's a win in my book.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I think even Star Wars ANH would have bombed if released today. Its a child of its time.

Sharpest comment I've heard about the SW franchise in a long time.

The industry-changing movies from the 1970s/80s . . . the classic early stuff from Spielberg, Lucas, Coppola, Ridley Scott, etc . . . Those movies continued to impress younger viewers for a good 20 years after being released. But that has finally changed. The kids born since about the mid-1990s seem like a different bunch from what came before.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Gawk...agreed. The robes in the PT were stupid. Obi-Wan wears the robes in SW simply because he's been hiding out on Tatooine for 20 years. LOTS of BG people on Tatooine are wearing similar robes - are they all Jedi in hiding too? Why oh why did Lucas decide this was a Jedi's uniform?

More proof Lucas didn't have things figured out - Luke's outfit from Return was supposed to be the way Jedi dressed - and if you check out some of the "Art of" books for the prequels they show Qui Gon and Obi Wan wearing similar black on black uniforms - before Lucas changed it to brown on brown.

Really? Black Jedi robes? That would have been better. And would give more reason for Luke to actually wear it in RotJ.

Agreed. That would have been bad ass. I've never liked the standard "Jedi" brown and white color scheme.

I think that was based off on the Jedi ghost appearances. Especially once Anakin popped up. Until then you could just argue that they showed up with the clothes they died in... but not Anakin. I guess that's where it was decided that that is a standard Jedi robe!?

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Sith=Black?

Think the Lukes hidden face with a black robe was for making him more menacing/enigmatic at the start of ROTJ also.

Yeah, I think you're right about that. But they were also long robes, not the shorter ones. So, go figure.

Actually, wait. Didn't Yoda's outfit mirror the look? Dark brown robe over lighter brown/beige robes?

So, maybe it was established early on. Of course, it's still confusing, given Uncle Owen's outfit...but maybe he just got a discount at the Jedi Temple Gift Shop from Anakin and thought the outfit looked cool? OH! Maybe he's wearing it ironically! He's like a hipster from a galaxy far far away...

Even prior to that there's precedence to suggest that brown and tan is the standard, it's what we saw Obi-Wan and Yoda in although their robes were much more robe like going all the way down to their feet instead of just below their waists with pants and boots. But I agree, I liked Luke's black outfit much better, much sleeker and seemed more functional too.

Luke's robes weren't the only aberration, at least in terms of EU canon and the games specifically. In Jedi we see use Luke use a Force choke on the Gammoreans, the only time we ever see a Jedi use it, yet in the games it's always been a Dark Side power either only available to Dark Jedi or at least earning you Dark Side points whenever it's used. But since Luke uses it, is it all that bad? Or maybe that's what Luke brings to the new Jedi, more of a balance; no more brown or brown only and the allowance to use powers like Force chokes.

Well, if our non-EU friends will allow us to inject a bit, there are two factors at play. 1) In the EU (and Star Wars canon until Lucas says otherwise) both the Jedi and humanity itself originated on Tatooine. The Rakatan Empire spread humans throughout the galaxy when they took them as slaves, and the Jedi chose to keep the rough clothing of their homeworld as a reminder of humility. 2) Because the entirety of the old guard is gone, there is no one to indoctrinate Luke and his peers into believing that the Force is inherently good or bad. The old Jedi actively persecuted anyone who believed that Force powers do not determine alignment and labeled them Grey Jedi. Every Jedi trained by Luke would qualify as grey, as he believes in the intent of the power, not the alignment of the power itself.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Wait, WHAT? The Jedi and humanity originated on Tatooine?! Where'd that come in?!

And where'd this Grey Jedi thing come from?

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Never heard of that either... not even in any of the other Star Wars discussions. Sorry... sounds fan made up.
