Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Yeah - that's what I thought. All that expanded universe stuff can take a hike. That would be like counting something from New Voyages as canon for TOS -
The movies of star wars are the best, but the EU books is what is keeping star wars alive. I hope they base the next films on the EU with Boba Fett's return

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Huh...and here I thought it was the gargantuan merchandise sales, ongoing animated series, and the carrot of the live series that were doing that. I actually thought the books were struggling - don't they keep getting cancelled before wrapping up arcs?

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

If they stop making EU stuff star wars will possibly fall, just saying!
That's seriously putting a misguided level of weight on something that is barely existent in most parts of the world. The EU has no real importance or meaning for the survival or strength or growth of Star Wars - the toys and merchandizing and movies and TV series has the weight you acclaim to the EU... the EU simply has none of that caliber.

What about the video games that form a large portion of the EU? You can't claim that the video games have had nothing to do with the continued popularity of the series.

I'm saying that they all have something to do with the continued popularity in various degrees, but to think the books or even videogames have anything on the toys regarding the popularity of Star Wars and removing those would cause its downfall, is just downright wrong.

They have their part... but they are minor compared to toys.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

You are obviously a staunch defender of the animated stuff, and i'd love to see your well thought out definitive timeline.:popcorn

Notice i wasn't rude? Nor condescending?

Rich

Not sure anyone can base millions of planets at war in a galaxy far far away on a timeline based on how long it takes for the earth to travel around our sun. I don't necessarily base 1 year of battle as modern "earth time" in a fantasy universe anyway! it can be as long as anyone wants to imagine. Regardless, the definitive timeline if you base it on our standard perception of it still has only shown about 110 days of battle in a 5 year spread of episodes. I don't see any of my posts as rude, just healthy debate on your idea and point of view but I don't see how I can not be condescending when its you that finds it impossible for the show to still be running 5 years when it was a "3 year" war! :facepalm :lol :behave I only defend that it doesn't have to end anytime soon and still be considered a chronicle of Clone War events. If you want it to end then don't tune in and consider the battle done! :confused

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Remember guys its disney now its about the $$$$ they will use han leia and luke to go after the old fans like me we have the money! Werent hans and leias kids jedi??? Tell that story uncle luke can train them!

I could see quick scene or two of the old cast just to give some validation of a new teenish cast that Disney is famous for. Like the kids of Han, leia and Luke.

Gives them the next 10 years to pop new SW movies for the new generation while TRY to 'ease' us in.

I dunno, man. I'm from the generation that was "Annie's" age when Phantom came out, and a vast majority of my money was spent on the games, not the toys. Most of my friends both same age and younger found out about Star Wars through video games, and then convinced their parents to let them watch the films. I think you're overrating the importance of toys in today's digital world (ignoring LEGOs, of course).

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I disagree. VHS kept Star Wars relevant.

Most people at LucasFilm refer to the late '80's and early '90's as the Dark Ages for STAR WARS content. The creation of the EU and the success of the Zahn novels is what GL himself partially credits for allowing them to identify there was a market for new STAR WARS and thus the road the the prequel trilogy was born.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I am a fan of the prequels but acknowledge there obvious short comings. As much as people crap on GL for the result, I lay some of that blame on his producer who clearly didn't have the balls to say, "Hey GL, maybe it would work better if Anakin doesn't yell yippee."

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Seems like a slap in the face to not announce that on any level.
I wonder what the real story is.

It was done without any fanfare. Chances are once Kathleen Kennedy was brought in he realized he was always going to be second potato or worse, she didn't want him there so they did a little forced retirement. Either way, when people complain about the film content, McCallum has to take some of the blame. He came across as a professional sycophant, IMO.
