The RC was made just for C7 and they didn't even know if it would work until the show started.
In videos of the show you can see them push it out on stage.

yes, i read this as well, the C7 droid is the only one made totally wireless. and i also heard it was finished only a few days before the show, and there was no rehearsal for the stage appearance

That was the sphero-based one?

"But for the latest sequel in the long-running saga, JJ Abrams chose not to use this method, but to create a robot from scratch that is remotely controlled by an operator and can perform specific commands.

"We talked originally about how to best have BB8 in the film and there were a lot of discussions about how having a CG BB8 would be so much easier for shooting, but we also knew it would better for the film, for the actors, for the sets, for the look of it if it were performed, and Neal Scanlan and his unbelievable team built and puppeteered it for the movie," Abrams said during a Q&A session at the Star Wars Celebration fan convention in Anaheim, California on 16 April.

Just to be clear, by puppeteering, Abrams means that there was a crew remotely controlling the robot off-camera, but it is fully-functioning robot, rather than a puppet with wires being physically moved to create realistic action."

i just had to explain this to a guy on astromech, if you watch this trailer at 1:09 it shows the puppeteer in green and the controls in green as well

there are many bb8's made for ep7. but none that was wireless like we've seen at C7. there was a very early interview with mark hamill saying he controlled the droid and he mentioned somewhere it was "connected"

we don't know exactly how many bb8's were made for filming, but they guys on astromech now believe there are 2 stage droids (the droid at celebration 7) but this has not yet been confirmed. we do know there are bb's made for certain scenes, one scene he needs to jump out of a ship and land straight up, so they build a bb to do just that, when you throw him he lands straight up.

there is also a BB that is just a giant sphero and they CGI his head on, which you can see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irWZCOKK-r0 at 0:26

there was also BBs made to stay in one place and only move the head, which be believe is the "net" bb8 but we won't know until ep7 comes out

if your interested in learning about bb8 theres a great group building and researching on astromech, the builders of the droid actually are members, but since ep7 started and they were signed on they don't post anymore... we are dying to hear what they have to say once the movie is over

So I wonder if Finn is in the top or bottom turret,

Well, it's the top turret we see turned around to fire at the pursuing TIEs on Jakku... Since I haven't seen any fire coming from the ventral turret, I'm presuming this is the one Finn's in.

Actually, Oliver's still posting there, no problem. He just doesn't overstep his NDA.

It makes more sense coming from the floor......like the Joe Johnston sketch:

Unless this is the position when the turret turns to shoot backwards........(head scratch)

Regardless, it still means that they, for the most part, are pointing straight up and down, perpendicular with the Falcon and that TIEs conveniently come at the Falcon from the dorsal and central sides. Well, that is, they happen to do so whenever we see things from inside the turrets, in outside shots we see them coming from all angles, like they actually would.

Is that Peter in the suit? Some of the mannerisms and head movements don't look like him, but then when he stepped around the corner in that classic Bowcaster pose, I thought, "That has to be Peter."

He's not in the best physical condition--I assume some of the motions may seem "off" at this point. (I don't know if it's PM in the suit, just saying.)
