Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

I do wish they'd given this story a unique logo outside of the "STAR WARS" plus title bucket, similarly to Empire and Jedi. The he-man packaging font is certainly a callback to the 80s, I suppose, but it's a bit distracting how tightly they've wedged it into the space between the lines of the classic "STAR WARS" lockup.

Ohhh, so the whole "disk" would move. I never thought about what it would look like from the outside and hadforgotten the turret is "fixed" in a sense. My mind's eye had been limited to how it was portrayed from inside, not considering the studio model didn't really mesh with that. I really like this and it's probably the only way it could really work.
the entire disk has to move. The actual gunwell is not at the centre of the disc. Which means that the gunner is not just spinning, they are moving side-to-side around a ring.

And as I posted in another thread, due to the recessed position of the gunner, the sightlines are so bad that spinning the unit is a moot point.

Agreed, but it still doesn't get around the fact that, as shown in ANH, that when manned it really only seems to deal with attackers coming at you from directly above and below. Although they clearly face forward, and can probably face backwards as well, during TOS there's no indication that they can operate facing that way. Certainly from the gunner's perspective the guns would be pointing directly up or down when facing down the Falcon's X & Y axis.

If THIS is all that we can find to complain about, I'd say they've done a very good job so far.

the model kit by MPC / Ertl has the rotating torrents and that kit came out in 1979. Some of you guys should be thrown in the Salacc pit for not know that

Ha, I know,....back then I thought that the turret moved,....but looking at the filming models & the logic on how the gunners access the guns locked the turret in one position......until now

Some folks don't care about ruining the fun of those trying to stay relatively spoiler free. We have a clearly marked spoiler thread - but, some would rather just be an ****** and make spoiler filled posts - even if they are making obvious allusions to spoilers. What a pity.

I apologize for my part in that. I posted here because I'd seen people speculating on who Rey was crying over, and the "Han dies" rumor has been around since pretty much he was announced in the cast. I figured no harm in pointing out Harrison didn't necessarily still have that as a condition for coming back, and also that further examination of that brief shot made it far more likely it wasn't Han anyway. Since Boyega had been doing screen tests with potential cast members for Episode VIII, I figured that was a good enough indicator he doesn't die for it to not be a spoiler, either. I hadn't thought Bryancd would respond as he did. And I, personally, still think Han won't die (at least, not in this movie).

And my response assumes I am privy to the inside of Harrison Ford's mind, which I am not. I'm speculating as to what he may have been presented to him to come back and participate in a film franchise he has historically not expressed a lot of adoration for.

Here's something new, someone's firing blue blasters.

At last we have dirty, weathered spacecraft and tech that actually looks used and beat on.
The fact that Jedi might have slipped into lore gives me the chills of ANH when Obi first explained Jedi to Luke. I think JJ might just have a handle on some of the magic of the OT. I'm thrilled to find out.

With all this "old school" talk, I was hoping we'd get back to all red blaster bolts. They might have different strengths or benefits, but blasters is blasters...
Red for bad guys vs blue or green for good guys feels so GI JOE. One of my biggest design nitpicks of the prequels.

I actually like the aesthetic although I agree if all blaster's function similarly there is no reason for the bolts to be different colors. It does help inform the audience where the bolts are coming from.

I'd been splitting my attention between the ship and the foreground, so I only just got that that's an AT-AT foot:

Which lines up nicely as a reverse-angle of what Rey seemingly watching it take off, as she apparently lives in an abandoned, fallen AT-AT:
