Isn't there a market out there for people who only want the size and quality of IMAX without the gimmicky 3D?
Of course there is.
* 12% of all people can't experience 3D. There are various reasons for this: esotropia, anisometropia, amblyopia and other conditions. There are various degrees of some conditions and while some sufferers can't see 3D movies at all, some can see 3D movies but not experience the 3D effect.
* People who can experience 3D but who suffer from a migraine when they leave the theatre.
* People like me, who have such good vision and attention to detail that they are largely bothered by the crosstalk between left and right eyes with polarized filters and by the lack of focus in fast-paced scenes.
Hey, in my country there will be only one IMAX theatre that show commercial movies, and it will be showing Star Wars, unfortunately only in 3D.
People want IMAX for sure - even though the IMAX-3D tickets cost almost twice as much as the 2D tickets, they sold out really fast, and there are very few seats left at any showing up 'til New Year's Eve.
However, the theatre is also in a mall that is part of a development that came about through shady practices by corrupt politicians, and a large chunk of the cost was funded by the local tax payers (of which I am one) so I am also boycotting the mall on principle. Otherwise, it would have been almost within walking distance from where I live.
Over here, there will be 2D projections but all of them will be in 2K and on relatively small screens. All theatres with 4K projectors will be showing it in 3D...
I almost thought about waiting for the BluRay - it wouldn't be
that more expensive than the local ticket prices and I would get almost the same image and sound quality as in the theatre. But then I wouldn't be able to discuss the movie on forums such as this one in December..
BTW. The Force Awakens was shot in 2D. This means that all footage will have to have been
converted into 3D.
That is a degradation in quality right there.
