Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Man ... what I want to know is, why is it SO HARD to find an IMAX screening of TFA that isn't in stupid 3D? There is ONE theater within a hundred mile radius of me that is showing 2D IMAX ...... I HATE 3D, but I hate low-quality digital projection even more. Considering I impulse bought my IMAX 3D tickets for the 17th while I still could, I guess I'll sit through it and then hit the one 2D showing (I was finally just now able to find one) later that week. Sucks that my initial experience will be in 3D though ... am I the only one that feels this way? Isn't there a market out there for people who only want the size and quality of IMAX without the gimmicky 3D?
Idk about IMAX 2D, since I was looking for regular 2D, but our biggest mall (we have no theaters independent of the malls) didn't have a single regular 2D showing to speak of. I had to go to one of the lesser malls (we have 3 in the area, two of which are shrinking and the other booming) to find the format I wanted.

And I have never bought into the 3D craze. The only movie I ever considered going to in 3D was Avatars, although I never did get to. The one movie I actually did see in 3D (it was a part of my bachelor party, I didn't buy the tickets) was Man of Steel, and the 3D added nothing to the experience. (Although a good friend of the family that went with us sadly passed away earlier this year, so I wouldn't take it back now).

Wanting answers and wanting to be spoiled are two different things. I'm perfectly fine waiting until I see the movie to get the definitive answers to my ruminations. As I said, I'm thinking out loud and just as much mentioned it to see if anyone else wondered the same thing or found that a little curious.
I'm with you.

This stuff is like talking religion. It's way better to share ideas than to recite scripture or talk science

I've been avoiding the spoiler thread because once someone posts something contrary to the "official non-official spoiler doctrine" without fail a few people will say "WE ALREADY KNOW THAT BECAUSE WEBSITE X POSTED IT AND PERSON Y CONFIRMED IT".

It's a good one and really one that no one is 100% certain on. Maz has remained a real mystery in a lot of respects. So has Snok. No one has any clue about him.

I'm liking that still nothing is known about Snoke. I realize SW has some "unconventional" names but I still can't get over his. Anyway, I can't wait to learn more about him. Now that the trailers are out of the way, other remaining notable omissions are Max von Sydow. Not even a glimpse of his character so I imagine he must be pretty important. And Maisie Richardson-Sellers is still under wraps, although she is not top billed. I wonder if her character is important and intentionally suppressed or if it's just a minor role.

I got an interesting call from a good friend today. We had previously discussed when we were going to attempt to see The Force Awakens, and my position was that I definitely wanted to see it but was planning to wait until the crowds had died down a bit. Turns out he got tickets for us to see the 8:00 p.m. showing on December 17th, so it looks like I'll just have to deal with the crowd. :cool

Concerning 3D vs 2D, we have no IMAX here in Luxemburg, but really nice, big normal cinemas. They have bucketloads of screenings per day in multiple rooms simultaneously, but they're in 3D. The one next to me has 2 screenings per day in 2D. :-(
Luckily I got tickets for a 2D screening on Dec 16 at 23:59 :) (the other 2D that day being during the morning, when everybody's at work, obviously)

Incidentally, what's the best type of screen to see this on?

I remember seeing avatar on ultra avx and it was the greatest thing ever. Two days later I saw it on imax and the movements weren't nearly as clear. Which made me think that a digital film is better on a digital screen. Does that make sense?

I noticed this when I saw Chewbacca in the first teaser, he looks as though he's had a feminine makeover :( At least they got rid of his horrible quaffed hairdo from RotJ.

Yeah, his eyes still look off to me. Like the mask's eyeholes are too small or something. Otherwise I think they did a great job with him though.

Of course there is.
* 12% of all people can't experience 3D. There are various reasons for this: esotropia, anisometropia, amblyopia and other conditions. There are various degrees of some conditions and while some sufferers can't see 3D movies at all, some can see 3D movies but not experience the 3D effect.
* People who can experience 3D but who suffer from a migraine when they leave the theatre.
* People like me, who have such good vision and attention to detail that they are largely bothered by the crosstalk between left and right eyes with polarized filters and by the lack of focus in fast-paced scenes.

Hey, in my country there will be only one IMAX theatre that show commercial movies, and it will be showing Star Wars, unfortunately only in 3D.
People want IMAX for sure - even though the IMAX-3D tickets cost almost twice as much as the 2D tickets, they sold out really fast, and there are very few seats left at any showing up 'til New Year's Eve.
However, the theatre is also in a mall that is part of a development that came about through shady practices by corrupt politicians, and a large chunk of the cost was funded by the local tax payers (of which I am one) so I am also boycotting the mall on principle. Otherwise, it would have been almost within walking distance from where I live.
Over here, there will be 2D projections but all of them will be in 2K and on relatively small screens. All theatres with 4K projectors will be showing it in 3D...

I almost thought about waiting for the BluRay - it wouldn't be that more expensive than the local ticket prices and I would get almost the same image and sound quality as in the theatre. But then I wouldn't be able to discuss the movie on forums such as this one in December.. ;)

BTW. The Force Awakens was shot in 2D. This means that all footage will have to have been converted into 3D.
That is a degradation in quality right there.

I HATE 3D. If there was a word stronger than "hate", that's what I'd feel. I despise with my entire being the 3D gimmick. When it was announced this would be filmed on analogue film I was pumped, then when they revealed they would adapt it for 3D I was let down a little bit.

I got tickets to the 2D showings and I couldn't be happier. It is a little upsetting that the big time slots and big screens are being filled with the 3D version though. 3D is such a huge money-grab technique. My father is one of those who cannot experience 3D, and aside from me absolutely hating the 3D fad, I refuse to see the premiere without my father.
