in truth, I'll admit..no. I don't follow the working of the toy industry closely... but also it may be some of my inherent always there cynicism at work as well..
for instance, take playmates. at a recent panel, they claim that the 4 main turtle figures out sold everyone. EVEN the main villains like shredder and krang. hence why we only got two sets of classics series figures.. (both turtles, one animated and one movie). Meanwhile, Shredder and Krang where mysteriously cancelled. despite high demand for them and despite not even being given a chance to fail as they so claim. meanwhile, row after row of turtle variant peg warmers line the toy aisle at the one I just went to. they may vanish at christmas, but rest of the year, they just sit there gaining dust. I don't quite get how that works either.... meanwhile, companies like mondo do fantastic work. yet I also think their price point is ridiculously high also, especially for a limited edition. $600's for four figures. go figure.
at least some collectibles I can understand the high price point. the all metal Sideshow C3P0 for instance. only thing it does is light up it's eyes, but the cold feel and heavy weight of metal makes it one of the cooler items I own.
while it may have some unique tech, I also argue that we've been so spoiled by tech advancements that stuff that would have seemed amazing ten years ago is almost ho hum now.
that might also be part of it as well sub consciously.
But, that's my opinion... others may definitely vary: )
