Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Yes. Geyndolyn Christie is playing a Stormtrooper. You remember those guys? They had incredibly bad aim, couldn't see well out of their own helmets, kept getting tossed around like ragdolls by a Wookie and couldn't win a battle against the technologically inferior Ewoks who were armed with sticks and rocks. I don't think playing the role of a stormtrooper is something to aspire towards. It's like casting Anne Hathaway as a redshirt in Star Trek.

Once again this has to be posted:

Stormtropers bad shooting explained.jpg

This is all besides the fact that she is so... so obviously not just a grunt trooper. From the non-standard armor and helmet and blaster to being the only chrome-colored trooper in evidence out of the hundreds we've seen for this film in the teasers to the fact that she's a Captain to the fact that she's up on the dais with the other head bad guys to the fact that she's got a cape (all the cool people have capes).

Pick yer battles. Phasma ain't one.

So she's an Imperial Royale Guard with a name? I guess there may be hope if her weaknesses aren't being knocked out by a mere force push or be told to bugger off. Unless there's some relationship between her and the main characters, the cool looking bad guys usually don't amount to much except to accomplish one plot point. Maul was essentially there to kill Qui-Gon, Zam was there to start a mystery, Jango was there to make an army, Dooku was there to be the bad guy of the Republic, Grievous was there to put Obi-Wan somewhere else, and Boba Fett was there just to nab Solo. Looking cool and having the 'best of the best' doesn't mean that character won't go out in the most anti-climactic way.

Could we all just pretend he's not here? No, he's not a troll in the way that violates the site TOS, but he's trolling you and ruining the thread just the same. Stop feeding the troll, fellas!

There are a few problems with this post. One, it reflects your inability to follow your own advice. Two, it's bordering on spamming since it's almost word for word what you said a few posts ago, and three, what exactly was wrong with my last post? I was called out for not mentioning Captain Phasma, but so far the only thing that anyone can talk about her is that she's a stormtrooper who wears cool armor and a cape. All I was pointing out was that cool looking characters who are supposed to be super awesome don't always mean they'll have any substance that makes them interesting beyond their one single point in the story.

Jeyl - You have a legitimate debate that is worthy of discussion, so create a thread for it. If those seeking TFA news came to this thread and saw dozens of "The prequels suck!" posts I would suggest the same.

Please, create your own thread for your discussion.

Perfect. And for the record, I actually DO dislike the prequels, but I don't think it's appropriate to force my opinion into a thread where my opinion derails the flow of general discussion.

Creating a thread worthy of its own discussion is free, and the ability to recognize where this practice is appropriate needs to be exercised more often. When it isn't, you can and will be accused of trolling. Just my .02

I'm sorry! I didn't realize you were so looking forward to disregarding more posts with RPF members attempting to discuss your pet topic in good faith. I'd keep encouraging people not to engage on this matter though, as it's a waste of their time to try and have the conversation with you and a waste of ours to read your arbitrary responses that drum up controversy out of thin air.

Think of it like this Westies. Take everything that Peregrinus said about Captain Phasma.

"From the non-standard armor and helmet and blaster to being the only chrome-colored trooper in evidence out of the hundreds we've seen for this film in the teasers to the fact that she's a Captain to the fact that she's up on the dais with the other head bad guys to the fact that she's got a cape (all the cool people have capes).

That's it? Boba Fett can easily fit those descriptions (including the cape) yet he gets taken out by a blind guy who accidentally hit his jetpack. That's not an issue of gender, that's typical depictions of 'cool looking' Star Wars characters.

Just don't watch it then! Speak with your wallet instead of complaining and damning a movie you haven't seen more than 6 minutes of.

"I want a cookie!"

"Here's a cookie."

"It may be raisin!!!! Why can't you make cookies right!!!!"

"I'm giving you what you want. It's not going to be a raisin cookie. It specifically has chocolate chips in it"

"But the last time we had cookies, they looked like chocolate chips, but had raisins!"

"Well friggin try it, I can SEE a chocolate chip! it's right there!"

"But it may not be semi-sweet chocolate!!! This cookie will likely suck!!!"

"Well then eat a snickers and keep quiet."

You're looking for an issue where there isn't one. No one knows what role she'll play yet, but there's nothing to indicate she'll be weak or downplayed - all indicators we've seen from this movie (as opposed to what happened to Boba Fett three decades ago) point to the opposite. You gotta go out of your way, and into your own imagination, to think she's more likely than not to be a non-factor or an undermined character. My issue is that you're never able to say "good point. I'll wait and see" when someone does try to have the conversation with you. You insist on keeping the issue alive, at the cost of honest discussion.

Jeyl, kristenhenry70's post have already put you in your place. I'd rather listen to her informed opinions on this subject and she clearly doesn't think much of yours.

So apparently Drew Struzan had this to say today!!!

" JJ showed me like half the movie and it was just a wonderful film and I know it’s going to be grand. I got to read the script and subsequently I’ve seen half of it and I can tell you and the fans this, Honest to god, it is far and away probably going to be THE BEST Star Wars you’ve ever seen. It’s beautifully made and it’s a wonderful story."

Put in my place... with what? Misinterpreted statements like this?

"I don't need some guy on a board to defend how women are treated in film."
As strange as it sounds, my position has never been one where women needed me to shown how women are treated in film. As I've told you, what I have to say about it are my views and my opinions. If kristenhenry70's opinion is different, than that's pretty much that. We have different opinions. I'm not looking at this scenario as though every single woman in the world will instantly agree with my viewpoints. Even women debate on women's issues.

"It creates the "problem" out of thin air, and then tells us that we have to be upset about it."
Ok, I will certainly hear you out on the 'out of thin air' points. I do let my anger get the best of me, but I try my best to ensure I'm not taking it out directly on the users. But please understand, I'm no spider masquerading as a clown and there is a difference between talking about something I get upset about, and telling people what they should get upset about. You want a thread where users are telling people to get upset? Go to the new Ghostbusters thread. They would LOVE to tell you why you should be upset about the new film.

"My own counsel will I keep."
And believe me when I say this, I am not trying to impose my views onto you or get you to look at me as some representative of the female gender. I would like to see more female representation in Star Wars, but I understand that others, women included, will have a different view on the matter. Whatever you have to say about this film or on the subject matter, I will not tell you what to do or how you should feel about it. I would ask you how you felt about it. I can also assure you that no matter what your views are of the film, you'll get no name calling from me.

I hope it's everything you want it to be.

This thread is going to be a sad little corner of the internet if it's only a bunch of men sitting around debating an issue they have a specious claim to. I would suggest you invite her to participate of the other women of the RPF.

Listen man, nobody is saying this isn't a valid topic in general or that you don't have a point. This just isn't the thread for it. Please take this discussion elsewhere.

This is a thread for discussion and reasonable speculation about TFA. The Ghostbusters thread ground to a halt because people couldn't stop posting political commentary and cynical speculation, and now you're doing the same here. Please, discuss it on the appropriate thread.
