Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Well, for the OT and PT, ILM did all the effects. Iron Man had something like twelve effects houses handling different bits of the effects work for that film (including ILM). If they spread the load for the new films, I expect post-production will take a lot less time than in the old days.

Well let's look at it this way... This is Disney's dollars now. They will make it happen. They're probably doing this like the Marvel universe and keeping multiple projects moving along with an insane army of people all working on bringing these stories together. Obviously they have a timeline planned and know exactly what they are doing. WE don't know much of anything because we aren't on the inside, but you better bet they have some big roadmap on Star Wars and they can crank through things pretty efficiently and with high quality at the same time.

If you have the money and right people, you can do anything in a finite amount of time.

I don't think quality will suffer. They just need to make sure the right people are on board directing good stories and keeping the visual look and feel of Star Wars consistent.

It's a bit scary how fast these are coming together. The cynic in me wants to wonder if we'll see a quality drop, but I've got faith after how Disney has handled Marvel.
Here's hoping.

I've not heard a thing that tells me Disney 'handles' Marvel. Seems as if they let them do their thing since it's raking in the mega-bucks.

Not creatively, but financially, Disney provides a massive financial resource base for Marvel and LucasFilm to access to produce content. Totally different story back when the SW films were funded solely by a single private company with much more limited resources.

So Disney is essentially the mafia... they hand over a pile of cash and say "pay us back when the movie is done... with 60% interest."

Meanwhile, back in Ep7 news...

In all honesty, it is very difficult to have a (non-spoiler) conversation about this movie without discussing the past, and where it looks like they are going. That's gonna include what we like/hate about the frachise to date, as well as Abrams other films.

This thread will keep moving back and forth through all those things. Sometimes it will derail, then it will get back.

How is it a mafia if they OWN it? They aren't loaning anything. Disney owns that wing of Marvel Studios (Avengers and such), but they let them operate as if they were a separate entity, letting them do what they're doing. Same goes for Star Wars. They now own the Star Wars franchise, but are putting it in capable hands and serving as the employer. There isn't anything to pay back.

True... I stand corrected.
They bought two geese that lay golden eggs. How's that? ;)

Breaking! J.J. Abrams has reportedly approached Disney about moving up the Star Wars: The Force Awakensrelease date. This comes from the mouth of Abrams himself, addressing a group of attendees at a recent Hollywood industry event… this is banquet season after-all. Apparently, his desire for secrecy does not apply in this case, as he openly expressed his frustration about the Episode VII leaks.

Just as long as we don't have to wait three years in between pictures. During the OT, when I was a teen, that was like a lifetime between pictures. It wasn't so bad for the prequels because, well, after the first one I just didn't really care anymore.

If these pictures are indeed good, I don't want to have to wait that long. I'm getting too old for that kind of a wait.

Exactly. Anyone who thinks this franchise isn't in capable hands really needs to watch that interview and reevaluate why they think that. I'm not saying its going to be the same experience as the OT, but I really don't see how people can be so negative at this early juncture.

I think Disney has more "hits" than "misses", but they're not infallible. Remember, these are the people who brought us The Lone Ranger and caused John Carter to die at the box office because of their less-than-brilliant marketing/promotion plan. You'd think with a property like Star Wars that they would want to make damn sure it's handled properly, but with this much money at stake The Mouse's greed might get the better of them.

Aside from the possibility that Episode VII might turn out to be a not-so-good movie, my concern is that between Episodes VII, VIII, IX, however many standalone movies they're planning, and all of the promotion/marketing/merchandising, they're going to over-saturate the market and make people sick and tired of suddenly seeing Star Wars everywhere.

That is why my collection is Indiana Jones... Not so much merchandise out there which makes it seem more rare (especially here in the Philippines). Downside is, there isn't much merchandise. Haha!

As for Star Wars... pretty much everywhere I look, I see Star Wars items - at toy stores, clothing stores (t-shirts and even shoes), etc. Star Wars merchandise is pretty much like Starbucks over here... they're both everywhere!

The lack of merchandising of Guardians of the Galaxy made me scratch my head,....theres not a lot of toys outside of the Disney Stores
....for a film that had that '77 vibe I thought they'd bombard us
