Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

The lack of merchandising of Guardians of the Galaxy made me scratch my head,....theres not a lot of toys outside of the Disney Stores
....for a film that had that '77 vibe I thought they'd bombard us

J

Because no one was going to fork over boatloads of money for the licenses on an unproven, relatively unknown group of heroes. Plus, it wasn't theoretically targeted at kids but teens and adults. A lot of people saw this as a risk and not another marvel slam dunk.

I'd have thought by now, though, they'd have worked through it and gotten more out. Who know's maybe Disney is playing hardball over it....

Breaking! J.J. Abrams has reportedly approached Disney about moving up the Star Wars: The Force Awakensrelease date. This comes from the mouth of Abrams himself, addressing a group of attendees at a recent Hollywood industry event… this is banquet season after-all. Apparently, his desire for secrecy does not apply in this case, as he openly expressed his frustration about the Episode VII leaks.

I think this was taken out of context somewhat. I think he likely said he wished they could release it earlier to avoid spoilers but thats not going to happen, too many moving parts attached to that release date.

Must be the case because it doesn't seem to be getting much coverage.

My friend from college just shared a photo from this week.
He got to direct Mark Hamill for an animated show.

It's funny because just a few days ago Paramount moved the release date of Mission Impossible 5 from December to summer so they could avoid the SW juggernaut. Wouldn't it be ironic if SW moved up to summer as well....they could just do the old switcheroo and M:I5 could go back to Dec. I'd be cool with that. :lol

Release juggling is the new blood sport in Hollywood. Too many worthy films have died a gruesome death because of too many releases in the spring/summer sweet spot, so everyone is trying to out guess everyone else and avoid being relegated. Even the Thanksgiving to Christmas release period has become a blood bath in recent years. I'm waiting to see what the summer scrum looks like this year with so many interesting-looking films in the pipeline!

There's a lot of infighting and preening when deciding opening dates - but opening the weekend of SW VII would certainly be a third rail experience.

I don't disagree.

But, can you imagine the social media explosion if they were to announce on May 1 that it's going to be released on May 22? (May 25 is a Monday).... the internet would explode and the amount of free publicity would be amazing. But, the reality is studio execs would never go for something like this...

Like this film needs free publicity. ;)
