Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I can't believe the amount of discussion people are even putting into the composition of single shots, with NO concept of how the rest of the sequence is staged or played out.

I sit in Previz/layout meetings that go on for HOURS with the directors scrutinizing every single shot in a sequence... making sure everything works together as a whole...the shot...sequence... whole film. So it's weird reading these critiques from people - who have no idea what is happening in these scenes - ripping apart a single shot, out of context, with WAY more scrutiny.

Just... bizzare

Things are going to go NUTS when a full trailer comes out!:lol

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Some comments from Carson Reeves of Scriptshadow:
I searched long and hard to determine if there was a screenwriting lesson to be learned here, and lo and behold I found one. If you look at all the shots in the Star Wars 7 trailer, you’ll see there’s a sense of URGENCY to every one of them. From the first shot, John Boyega’s storm trooper character is looking around in fear. He’s sweating. He’s trying to find a way out. The female character on the speeder bike needs to get somewhere fast. The X-Wing fighter is obviously going into battle.

There’s a sense of movement, a sense of purpose to all the shots, and that’s exactly what you want to do with screenplays. You want your characters to have purpose, to always be either going after something, reacting to something, or both. That’s part of the allure of this trailer. I mean contrast it with the trailers from the prequels. You’ll see a lot of standing around. A lot of great shots but with nothing happening in them. This goes back to what the original Star Wars was, which is a story that had urgency and purpose behind it. Bravo JJ!

Aided by a healthy dose of John Williams, of course.

How do we know who Johns character is? Obviously dressed in a trooper uniform he could be anything (and he doesn’t even have to be a little short). He could have infiltrated the troopers on a mission. Have we as yet got any information on which side (if not both) storm troopers are fighting, as there appear to be multiple versions.

Because he's said he plays a Stormtrooper who defects. Yeah, that could be disinformation, but it was such an off-the-cuff comment, I don't feel any reason to doubt it. And there are "leaked" set photos of him doing stuff in only the undersuit. Make of that what you will...

Why should we need to know context to be of the opinion that it's never necessary to throw the ground to the top of the screen? It's disorienting, flashy, and, stylistically speaking, just screams "look at how creative I am, you may praise me now".

"Only a sith deals in absolutes."

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Yes, it's disorienting, that's kind of the point. I do think context is important, and that it's pretty ridiculous to throw out such weighted opinions based on fragments of sequences.

I would add that generally if you're expecting a film in 2015 to aesthetically match one from 1977, you will be sorely disappointed.

JJ had better not forget some obnoxious wipes, however. That would be a bigger sin than a flying camera, IMHO.

Apparently the Football or Beach-ball droid is based on another of Ralph McQuarries concepts,

I saw that shared on Twitter yesterday but realized it looks a lot like digital text added rather than photo of an article's printed page. (Maybe it's just cause of the poor quality image)

Can someone with the actual issue confirm this? I searched online but didn't find any articles quoting this in the last two years.

"Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?"Princess Leia Organa to Luke Skywalker, disguised as a stormtrooper, during their escape from the first Death Starhttp://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20050614200519/starwars/images/thumb/a/a6/Gnome-speakernotes.png/20px-Gnome-speakernotes.webpListen (file info)[src]

So according to a legit nerd source, Luke himself was short for a stormtrooper...

Have at you, Salesman!

In universe? 6'. In the films? The actors were rail thin and stood at 5'10"-5'-11".

There would be much more taller TK's in the legion if that was the case, hell I'd consider doing one then

Regardless of the average height of the actors who portrayed ST's 35+ years ago, still worth a read.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I like it.

I would just hope they are given SOME instructions on how to wield a saber before REALLY having to use it.

Like cutting vines down or whatever wouldn't bother me but they need to see Luke before any REAL swordplay.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

"The average Stormtrooper is 6 feet fall and a few people we believe to have been cast as Stormtroopers are a little taller than that even. John Boyega is five feet, nine inches tall. That’s a little short for a Stormtrooper, well below average."

Maybe Boyega's character goes awol because all the other stormtroopers tease him over his height.

Can confirm, I am a 6'7" snowtrooper and I taunt vader for being shorter than me
